Arthur puts itself in a difficult place when it comes to evaluating it. One of the best things I can say about Arthur is that a lot of people laughed really hard in my theater, and that does not make them wrong. However, the percentage of those people who had seen the original 1981 Arthur was probably very low. That film is superior, but this update has some genuinely funny moments. Morgan Freeman has a way with words. Not only is the guy an incredible actor, but his skills in the narrative department also excel. I would be hard-pressed to name an actor or narrator who does a better job at guiding a documentary than he. Putting his vocal talents to use once more, this time in the educational IMAX film, Born To Be Wild. Bring the whole family for this wonderful documentary that kids and adults will equally enjoy.

Quite possibly my favorite Pixar movie to date, The Incredibles is finally on Blu-ray! After making The Iron Giant, which was a critical but not commercial success, Brad Bird joined Pixar to make their first movie with humans as the lead characters. Initially, Disney wanted to make it a live action movie but that idea was turned down by John Lasseter. As Bird said later, “Basically, I came into a wonderful studio, frightened a lot of people with how many presents I wanted for Christmas, and then got almost everything I asked for.” Continue reading ‘The Incredibles (Blu-ray Review)’

It’s like that Lady Gaga song, “Born This Way.” Here’s two of my favorite interests…the color black and the subject of death…combined into one movie title. So yeah, baby I was born this way. Okay, that may be a stretch, but bear with me. I actually just saw this feature late last weekend at the Cleveland Film Festival. I thought it was pretty good, but I know if it had not been past twilight I would have loved it more. Anyway, I’m pleased to report that Magnolia Home Entertainment and Magnet will be releasing Sean Bean’s Black Death on Blu-ray May 10th. Continue reading ‘Black Death Lives on Blu-ray This May’

I haven’t heard of this movie but any movie directed by Peter Weir (Master and Commander) and stars Ed Harris (The Rock), and Colin Farrell (In Bruges) should be pretty good. This is a prison escape movie which I always enjoy so I’m looking forward to seeing this. The movie also has upcoming stars Saoirse Ronan (The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo) and Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe as well. Continue reading ‘The Way Back Comes to Blu-ray April 19’

The idea and powers at work behind Your Highness give the impression of a juicy premise. The film is a different take on fantasy/adventure films, incorporating comedic actors, heavy improvisation, and modern language. It has the right kind of scope and old school style handling of the action and creatures, yet it is also ridiculous, filthy, and very R-rated throughout. Not too many Thai films are marketed as action-borderline-science fiction these days. With the exception of the Ong-Bak franchise I can’t really remember any other films to come out of Thailand that were actually memorable or even successful. The makers of Vanquisher were going to change all that. Magnolia Films acquired the home video distribution rights. Did the filmmakers succeed in their quest to crossover? Read our review of Vanquisher on Blu-ray and find out. Continue reading ‘Vanquisher (Blu-ray Review)’

A frumpy Jessica Alba is a girl who obsesses over numbers. When her mathematician father is overtaken by mental illness she will have to overcome her own weird behaviors if she is going to lead a somewhat normal life. You didn’t think it was going to be that easy, did you? IFC has released the trailer for An Invisible Sign which doesn’t look all that bad. If one were to take An Invisible Sign at face value it could be considered downright wholesome. An Invisible Sign is available on ON DEMAND as we speak and will roll out to theaters May 6th. I feel that there may be too little to talk about here, as the film is both fairly self explanatory and only lasts for 40 minutes, but I will try my best. Born to Be Wild 3D is an IMAX nature documentary from Warner Bros. Pictures, which has been shot in 3D, using IMAX and 4K digital cameras. The film is incredibly simplistic, but effective in what it tries to show in such a short span of time. Continue reading ‘‘Born To Be Wild’ Is Both Beautiful and Brief’

Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson star in The Island, Michael Bay’s take on a dystopian future. The inhabitants of the island think that they live on it due to the rest of the planet being uninhabitable. It’s much more than that. The Island marked Michael Bay’s first project that was not produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. How will it hold up on Blu-ray? We’ll see what happens when The Island debuts on Blu-ray June 21st, 2011. For a couple weeks in Los Angeles, a particular screening has been taking place, which has been feeding the desires of all film geeks who have attended. I am speaking of the original, full cut of Quentin Tarantino’s fourth feature film – Kill Bill. Billed on the marquee as Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, this is the original print of the film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in 2003 (complete with French subtitles). Disney took a huge gamble in 1982 when they released TRON into the marketplace. It was so unlike anything else, that it never found an audience worthy of its ambition. For most movies, that would have been the end of it, with no chance of redemption or an ongoing franchise. Then a couple of things happened. The world changed and people as a whole became more technologically savvy and open to a film that is so focused on an electronic world.

I can’t say I honestly heard of this movie before, but when the call comes to put something up I’m all over. Today I am happy to announce that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has made official plans to bring the Academy-Award Nominated Film (Best Original Screenplay), Another Year, to the Blu-ray format. I had my reservations about going to see Black Swan when it was playing theatrically. I loved the concept, but I hate to admit it, I’m not the biggest Natalie Portman fan. I know she’s a natural beauty and that she can act, but every time I hear her name I tend to cringe and think of her wooden performances in the Star Wars prequels. Don’t get me wrong, I love those films, albeit they will never live up to the originals, and I know the blame should not fall on Portman’s shoulders alone, but on Lucas. However, a film about ballet? That sounded pretty boring to me. How about you? Continue reading ‘Black Swan (Blu-ray Review)’
