Hey that rhymes! ‘Blu-ray’ and ‘May’ that is. OK. Seriously. I am very excited about this next Blu-ray announcement! Drum roll please… May the 4th be with us this May as the Weinstein musical Nine sings and dances its way onto the Blu-ray format on you guessed it…May 4th! The Sony Picture Home Entertainment film will be presented in a AVC MPEG-4 encode with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track. My new found love for Penelope Cruz has me salivating for this release. I have to admit. I did not know anything about the following title until yesterday. We are all familiar with legendary cinema action master John Woo right? Well anyway, his newest masterpiece is coming March 23rd to Blu-ray from Magnolia Home Entertainment. And best of all, his new epic film Red Cliff appears to come in two different flavors on the Blu-ray format. One will be a US Theatrical Version and the other is billed as the Original International Version Containing Part I & Part II. Continue reading ‘John Woo’s “Red Cliff” Invades Blu-ray This March!’

I never really know how I feel about these straight-to-DVD or Blu-ray titles. However, I feel a bit optimistic about Death Race 2 considering it is being produced by Paul W.S. Anderson and has some pretty impressive names attached to it. I guess it could go either way. I am kind of disappointed it is a prequel to the Jason Statham carnage filled movie, but maybe that means they will bring back the baddie…Frankenstein. If any of you readers frequent Las Vegas often, you know that at any given moment you’re bound to see something that puts you in a state of “ah.” Whether this is an intoxicated patron conducting a free sidewalk show or even a 1950’s young Elvis taking tips for a memorable, yet cherishing photo, there’s always a good show in Vegas! In any case, that’s similar to what happened to me last week in Sin City. February 22nd through the 28th was a tribute to the late musician Johnny Cash! If there ever is a film that I have high hopes for on the Blu-ray format, then it would be Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. But if I had a 10th choice, then I would probably say the monumental The Karate Kid. OK. Why not Part II as well? Didn’t every one my age start taking karate classes immediately after seeing this fim? Well just my luck, Sony made a killer announcement on Monday bringing my karate dreams to life on Blu-ray! My first brush with Greek mythology happened early on in my life, during the summer of 1981, with the theatrical release of Clash of the Titans. Although I was a mere 7 years of age, I remember the experience fondly and all the countless hours of enjoyment the movie’s action figures gave me as I bashed them around in my Little Tikes green turtle sandbox. Can you believe it? Two legendary films are making their way to Blu-ray and I have not seen either one of them. Well you know what they say. There’s no better way to see a movie for the first time then on the Blu-ray format. OK. They don’t say that, but I do. Besides, who are they anyway? Cocoon, the intergalactic drama, and The Thomas Crown Affair, a crowd-pleasing caper film, will arrive on the Blu-ray format April 6th from 20th Century Fox and MGM. Remakes seem to be Hollywood’s cup of tea in recent years, especially in the scary movie category. We’ve seen the kick-starts of well known franchises in recent memory such as Halloween and Friday the 13th. 2010 is no exception as audiences can now experience the facelift version of George Romero’s 1973 cult classic, The Crazies. This time around Romero is out of the director’s chair, now helmed by Breck Eisner, and into the role of producer. Continue reading ‘The Crazies is Thrillingly Sane’

Shutter Island may have been the best movie I have screened so far this year, but Cop Out was by far the most fun I have had at the theater in 2010. It’s laugh out loud hysterical at times and rather cliché at others, but there’s no doubt that the film strictly adheres to the fundamentals of a successful screenplay. Anyone who has studied modern day authors of screenwriting (Blake Snyder, Syd Fields, etc…) would be hard pressed to argue that Cop Out‘s plot points before Acts II and III are not vacuumed sealed airtight. Hey guys and gals! It’s Aaron Harris back at the ball and chain, (my desk) reporting on an interview I had with a superstar musician. Now when I say ‘musician,’ I mean musician! This is a guy who plays everything by hand, which being a musician myself, will do also, but to a certain extent. Ok, ok, let me stop beating around the bush and let you know whom I am referring to, but hold on, have you guys ever played Guitar Hero? If so, you’ll definitely lose playing against this guy. Marc Rizzo folks, Marc “the hardest working man” Rizzo! Continue reading ‘WSB’s Aaron Harris Interviews Marc Rizzo’

Game developer Zereo attempts to bring Game Art’s 1985 PC classic Thexder to a modern audience with their remake, Thexder Neo. Game reviewers Sam Bushman and Dan Morrison dissect this recent addition to the Playstation Network store and weigh in on whether this title is worth the $9.99 price tag. As always, feel free to post any comments, questions, counterpoints, or critiques in the comments section at the bottom of the page. Continue reading ‘Candid Gaming Reviews Playstation’s Thexder Neo’

Love him or hate him, there is no denying that Johnny Cash has had a profound effect on music and musicians. After all, the man is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Hailing from the small rural town of Dyess, Arkansas, Cash had an affinity for music even as a youth. If there was a moment where the young lad could sit himself in front of a radio, he took advantage of it. Continue reading ‘Walk The Line (Blu-ray Review)’

Not 1, not 2, but 3 classic thrillers are coming to Blu-ray this April from my favorite studio Lionsgate. The first time films on the Blu-ray format include Jade starring David Caruso and Linda Fiorentino, The Relic starring Penelope Ann Miller and Tom Sizemore and Flight of the Intruder starring everyone’s favorite Willem Dafoe and the infamous Predator hunter Danny Glover. Check out Lionsgate’s synopsis of each film listed below. Continue reading ‘3 Lionsgate Thrillers Coming to Blu-ray this April!’

Straight out of orbit and into your PS3 is the new Aliens vs. Predator (AVP) first-person shooter. Rebellion, the same company that brought us the very successful PC version of the game over a decade ago, is back with their 21st century overhaul. In AVP, you have the option of playing any one of the three single-player campaigns as a Predator, Alien or human Marine with four levels of difficulty that include easy, normal, hard, and nightmare. Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior started off as a cult movie with pirated copies circulating across college campuses. However, this only helped to build a loyal following for a very low budget martial arts film starring an unknown Thai actor named Tony Jaa. HE is the reason why this movie is so impressive. Let’s take a closer look at why this is. Continue reading ‘Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior (Blu-ray Review)’

I said this before, but this time I mean it. This may be the hardest movie review I have ever been tasked to write. That’s not because the movie sucked, quite the contrary, but because I was left with so many questions in regards to what I had just watched. And that’s a good thing! As I drove home Tuesday night from the preview screening I was left feeling both speechless and in awe. Continue reading ‘Take the Ferry Over to Shutter Island’

Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese once again collaborates with Leonardo DiCaprio after 3 successful films (Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed). This film is adapted and based off the novel by Dennis Lehane about an US deputy (DiCaprio) assigned to investigate a mysterious disappearance at a reclusive mental institution. Scorsese’s Hitchcockian approach to gothic horror is ripe with suspense and human drama. Continue reading ‘Martin Scorsese Traps Us On Shutter Island’

Could it really be that the most successful film of all time will be landing on the Blu-ray format this April? According to the below article in the Wall Street Journal it sure seems that way. You can read the full article below, but long story short, Fox is rumored to be issuing a bare bones Blu-ray release of Avatar on April 22nd with a 3-D Blu-ray release happening sometime near the end of the year.
