If the title of this post did not intrigue you, then I am sorry to say that you are not alive. I am just kidding. I recently just returned from a business/vacation trip to Las Vegas. If there is a heaven on Earth, then Las Vegas is that to me. As usual, I did not want to come back to the harsh winter climate of Cleveland, Ohio. Despite the few days of below normal temperatures out in Las Vegas, I can always find ways to have a good time out there. Continue reading ‘Blu-ray, Las Vegas and the Economy’

I missed this one in the theaters so I am excited to check it out on the Blu-ray format. Luckily, I won’t have to wait that long to do so. Sony Pictures recently announced a February 9th Blu-ray release date for the Penn Badgley and Dylan Walsh thriller The Stepfather. Technical specs have not been announced yet, but we do know there will be a Director commentary track, a couple making-of-the-film docs (see below), a gag reel and moveIQ. Ahhh Vegas. They really know how to throw a party out there. Call it the entertainment capital of the world, the grown-ups’ playground, call it what you may, there’s no denying that those casinos know how to bring in an audience and have them leaving happy. The folks at the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino are no stranger to this, as this past week the famed establishment hosted the likes of none other than Dave Matthews and his guitarist-extraordinaire friend, Tim Reynolds. Nearly twenty years ago, a wise figure once said, “Death comes for us all, Oroku Saki.” This astute sensei was none other than Master Splinter, from 1990’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. No matter one’s beliefs on politics, religion, or lifestyle, the only certainty in life is the knowledge that one day we are going to die. It is a brutal truth, and one conveyed perfectly by Master Splinter, who then teaches his four children that in death, one must find honor. With the recent release of New Moon, the latest installment in Summit’s Box-Office behemoth the Twilight Series (or Saga, or whatever they’re calling it), vampires seem to be on everyone’s mind nowadays; be it for the tweens’ phenomenal adoration of them or the fan boy disdain of what they represent. One thing is for sure; the pale sulky vampires are here to stay until weekend openings say otherwise. Continue reading ‘Thor’s TOP 16 Vampire Movies’

It’s the end of the year and we’re beginning to see the usual “best-of” lists. Seeing as this is 2009, some of these may even be “best of the decade.” Now, let’s be honest, some of these will be spot on, some will be terrible, but ultimately, they’re all subjective. That’s the beauty of cinema; there will never be two people who fully agree on everything a film has to offer. Continue reading ‘1939: Hollywood’s Greatest Year’

One of the perks of attending the Cinema Wasteland mini-convention in Strongsville, Ohio, besides the convenient locale for me, is being able to discuss various horror projects with their creators. Of the several attendees at this past autumn’s gathering, Director Emil Hyde was on hand to promote and discuss his latest work, The Landlord. Dream it…Earn it…Live it…with Fame this January on Blu-ray. The Blu-ray disc with Digital Copy will take center stage in your living room on January 12th from MGM Home Entertainment featuring an Extended Dance Edition not seen in theaters. Despite what most critics might have thought, I actually liked the film (see here). It’s an underdog tale of making your dreams come true. Everyone can use a little of that in their lives. As the Oscar season begins to heat up, there are always a few winter blockbusters thrown into the mix to help relieve some of the public’s apprehension of going to a movie with the fear of seeing something “too smart,” aka boring. This season is no different, with James Cameron’s new special effects epic Avatar. To some, such films are a welcome release, for the audience can sit back in a theater chair and just watch without thinking too much about the plot, but rather enjoy the action. Last we met, it was but a movie, now it is a concert. On December 3rd, a very unique event landed in Cleveland, Ohio…Star Wars: In Concert, performed by the amazing talents of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and their accompanying choir. However, you know that if Star Wars is the sole focus of the evening, this will not be your average concert. Continue reading ‘Star Wars: In Concert’

With an all-star cast of Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal, how can you go wrong? Well, let’s stop right there because Everybody’s Fine sported the likes of Robert De Niro, Kate Beckinsale and Drew Barrymore and that movie was a sloth-like downer. Fortunately, the same does not hold true for Brothers which made its box office debut this past weekend. Continue reading ‘‘Brothers’ Slow But Powerful’
