Disney Announces ‘Star Wars: The Bad Batch’ Series

Earlier this year the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars debuted on Disney+ to a great degree of fanfare and excitement. It was an appropriate closure to the show with some new characters introduced along the way. While the story of sisters Rafa and Trace seemed to just kind of evaporate, there were others that sparked curiosity as viewers approached the arrival of Order 66, most especially the quartet known as the Bad Batch. Now there’s news that Disney+ plans to release a full on spin-off series revolving around this ragtag group of specialized clones.

Watchmen: Season 1 (Blu-ray Review)

The initial announcement of a Watchmen television series was intriguing to hear. Arriving ten years after Zack Snyder’s (pretty good) attempt to bring the groundbreaking graphic novel series from creators Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons to life, would HBO be able to deliver the deluxe treatment in a manner similar to what Game of Thrones was able to accomplish? Would it be the novel again, but stretched out into a weekly series? Was the plan to take the name ‘Watchmen’ and do something else entirely? As it turns out, creator Damon Lindelof had some bold plans up his sleeves – a tangential sequel series designed to carry on many of the ideas presented in the original graphic novel, but continue going down that rabbit hole in a manner fit for today’s society. The result was one of the best self-contained seasons of television I can recall seeing in recent years. Now you can enjoy the whole season and more in this complete package. ‘Last Hurrah For Chivalry & Hand Of Death: Two Films By John Woo’ (Eureka Classics) Blu-ray & DVD June 24, 2019!

A decade before he would change action filmmaking forever with A Better Tomorrow and The Killer, director John Woo was directing martial-arts films for the two biggest studios in Hong Kong, Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest. Under the mentorship of the great Chang Cheh (Five Deadly Venoms), Woo began to develop his signature style, films that featured slick, stylish and often violent choreography, with dramatic plots that revolved around brotherhood, honour and redemption. Presented here are two of his early works from this period.  In Last Hurrah for Chivalry, two killers (Pai Wei and Damian Lau) agree to help a man exact vengeance upon a kung fu master. Woo’s first cinematic masterpiece, Last Hurrah for Chivalry is a dark and violent revenge film, featuring lightning fast swordplay and stylish cinematography.  In Hand of Death, a young Shaolin monk must train to defeat a dangerous Manchu warlord (James Tien) who is intent on wiping out the Shaolin once and for all. Featuring early performances from Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung (both also handled the film s stunts, along with third brother Yuen Biao), Hand of Death is an exquisitely stylish example of old school kung fu filmmaking.  Obscure and largely unseen for many years, Eureka Classics is proud to present these two early films from one of action cinema s all-time greats for the first time ever on Blu-ray, from brand new 2K restorations. Gotham: The Complete Fourth Season (Blu-ray Review)

As everyone gears up for the final season of Gotham, it’s time to go over the fourth and surprisingly best season of the series. I’ve been clear in my thoughts about the Batman show not featuring Batman in the past. The first season was a disappointment, the second season improved upon things, and the third season found the series embracing its craziness. The fourth season continues that trend, working more as a supervillain ensemble series, that happens to be in favor of the good guys somewhat succeeding, in the long run, to keep things going. Regardless of how compelling the storytelling is, this show works best as a wild and colorful series, happy to throw viewers through a loop by way of costume and production design, and the over-the-top acting that comes with it. Now fans can take in this fourth season, boasting some extras, and more.

South Park Season 21 (Blu-ray Review)

It is still somewhat difficult to imagine that a cartoon series that was ostensibly about vulgar young boys making fart jokes made it to 21 seasons. However, people familiar with the series will know that it hates to rest on its laurels. The sheer nature of the 6-day episode creation schedule of South Park has made for all-time great episodes with a finger directly on the pulse of whatever was going on that week. This pinpoint satire has aided in South Park becoming the phenomenon that gets to go 21 seasons and more. This season, the 21st, unfortunately, either started with a plan that frankly didn’t quite work out, or flipped back and forth too frequently between serialized season and episode-of-the-week formats. It is still funny and often biting, but it was missing an element of what makes South Park the thing to talk about with your friends. Continue reading ‘South Park Season 21 (Blu-ray Review)’

Legion: The Complete Season One (Blu-ray Review)

With superheroes dominating the box office many months of the year, it’s only natural that TV attempt to follow suit in its own way. We have the Arrow-verse, Gotham, and multiple Marvel Studios Netflix series, among other examples. FX got in the game too last year with Legion. Inspired by the Marvel Comics character, Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley took on the property and made an interesting, exciting, and very stylish series about a mutant diagnosed with schizophrenia, resulting in an uneven perspective on his own life, to say the least. Dan Stevens leads a strong ensemble cast in this eight-episode first season that happens to be my favorite of the different superhero shows currently on air. Now, with the second season fast approaching, the complete season one is now available to own.

Going Down to South Park Season 21 on Blu-ray and DVD This June

As a middle school student enjoying what I figured was just a raunchy cartoon on Comedy Central, I would have never expected South Park to be on the air for 21 years. I also would never have expected the level of growth and, I hesitate to say “maturity,” but let’s use relevance the show has maintained over its run. On June 5, 2018, Season 21 comes to Blu-ray and DVD and I am stoked to continue watching what will, strangely, end up being one of the longest running and persistently entertaining shows in the history of television. Read on for the details. Continue reading ‘Going Down to South Park Season 21 on Blu-ray and DVD This June’

Preacher: The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray Review)

Gotham: The Complete Third Season (Blu-ray Review)

The first season of Gotham was a disappointment. The second season was a large improvement. That came from the series feeling better about embracing its comic book roots and having more fun with the storylines and characters. It wasn’t perfect, but it was entertaining enough for a Batman show that doesn’t feature Batman. The third season is largely the same, although good work has been done put further emphasis on main story arcs that divided up the season. There’s also significant character work done on the show’s ensemble cast, which plays down the role of Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) in favor of the more colorful players seen here. Now viewers can take in what this third season has to offer in this complete Blu-ray set.

‘The Tick’ Interview with Actor Michael Cerveris

The Tick is an Amazon Video series based on the satirical comic book series of the same name. Many will remember the animated series from the 90s and possibly the previous live-action attempt from the early 00s, but it is now back in possibly the most exciting form yet. For those unaware, The Tick (Peter Serafinowicz) is a superhero in a blue bug costume who arrives in a city known as “The City” to help fight crime. However, this take on the series actually focuses more on a former accountant named Arthur (Griffin Newman) who becomes The Tick’s sidekick as they fight various supervillains. I was lucky enough to interview some of the cast members of the series during San Diego Comic-Con. This interview features actor Michael Cerveris, who stars as Ramses IV, a gang ruler conducting crime with flare. Continue on to see the video where I question Michael about what Ramses IV aspires to as the costumed gangster.
