13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

13 Hours 4K ReviewWith the exception of the first Transformers film I can’t be the only one out there that thinks everything else Michael Bay touched (outside Transformers 2-5) is pretty decent, can I?  We have such Bay-hem gems out there like the Bad Boys series and Pain & Gain to my all-time favorite The Island.  That’s why when 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (or 13 Hours as we’ll refer to it from here on out in this review) was initially released theatrically I didn’t even hesitate.  Boom!  He had my ticket sale.  Even if it just produced smoke, gunfire and other bombastic moments I knew I’d be getting my money’s worth despite his Transformers failures (in my opinion of course).  If I could be completely honest with you though, it was the addition of John Krasinski to the cast lineup that really got my butt cheeks in a seat.  I wanted to see what he could bring outside of The Office television series.  He did not disappoint! Cold Pursuit (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Liam Neeson — A name now synonymous with revenge action-thrillers. He will find you, and he will kill you. A fan of the genre will take note right now in their heads of all the films they’ve seen with Mr. Neeson kicking butt and taking names. There truly are quite a few, some good and some bad. Cold Pursuit takes our favorite “wronged man” and puts him in a bleak Colorado winter setting. The results here are like something we’ve seen before, but with a few very welcomed quirks and some unexpected humor. Supported by a strong narrative, some truly interesting plot twists, and the occasional laugh out loud moments, this newest piece feels more like a drama with some action than a knock down, drag out action film. Bundle up for the cold details below on this newest Neeson entry that hit stores May 14th! Continue reading ‘Cold Pursuit (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Crank (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Crank 4K ReviewCrank is fondly immortalized in my memories as one of the first elite Blu-ray titles that overwhelmingly wowed and showed off how razor sharp certain 1080p video footage could be.  I know we have come a long way since then with both 4K and 8K video sources and displays, but in the early days of HD (circa 2006) this was an absolute looker.   I fondly remember my eyes being dried out taking this in for the first time as I had never seen anything that chiseled before on my Sony 40” HDTV monitor at the time.  Wow!  This brings back so many memories, but honestly it was only 13 years ago not the lifetime I seem to be painting here.  That does warrant and raises the following question.  Since Crank was captured from a multitude of sources, some not even 1080p, how is this one going to look on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format?  After we get through the Film 101 below that’s going to be the subject we tackle next.  So stay tuned and if you’re just here for the A/V specs, by all means jump down to it below. Backdraft (4K Blu-Ray Review)

Backdraft has often been one of those movies for me that I forget about. For whatever reason, despite the fact that the film is engaging, well acted and steadfastly directed, I always sock it away somehow. The funniest part to me is that despite it going left of my attention a lot of the time, each time I revisit it I am reminded of the excellent story structure that balances drama, thriller and action, the strong cast (Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, Robert DeNiro, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rebecca Demornay, Scott Glenn, Donald Sutherland and JT Walsh… phew, what a cast!) playing at their best and the lovingly crafted direction from Ron Howard.  This exceptional 4K Release has made it very hard to imagine me forgetting this fantastic movie until the next viewing though! Check out more about the movie below that hit stores May 7th! Continue reading ‘Backdraft (4K Blu-Ray Review)’

The Kid Who Would Be King (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

King Arthur has a had a rough go of it at the box office in recent years time. Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword came out two years ago and bombed pretty hard (Having seen it, I’d say rightfully so). The Kid Who Would Be King takes a newer approach on the overdone source material and spins it around for a kid/family friendly adventure with some meat to it. Unfortunately, we failed this little gem at the box office. But now its coming to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray (Well, its ALREADY out on all home video formats now), where we can see that we maybe should have done batter by this one. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Back in 2014, The LEGO Movie took cinema-going audiences by surprise and by storm as it charmed and endeared everyone. It was the one of the first things to prop up Chris Pratt toward the superstardom he’d garner that following summer with Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel as the lovable space-idiot hot shot Star Lord. This movie launched a LEGO brand of theatrical releases to hot and cold successes with LEGO Batman Movie and LEGO Ninjago that hit and missed financially. And now here we are with the Second Part of the first film which you can pick up on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray when it arrives May 7th.

Alien 40th Anniversary (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Alien 4K ReviewAlien is a title I have been waiting for on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format for some time now.  Ever since we got Prometheus and Alien: Covenant last year I felt we got shortchanged with no Alien release.  But alas, they were strategizing.  It’s the 40th Anniversary of the film.  There was um a purpose for the film’s delay on the 4K disc format.  Alright, I’ll let that fly then.  What it really all boils down to is the fact that I’m ecstatic not only to have this movie in 4K now, but also to be among the first in the US with an advance review.  I’ll do my best to do this one justice and give it some love, but truth be told it really doesn’t need much TLC from me.  It’s a science fiction masterpiece after all.  I could just easily give the feature a 5-doggie score and move along to the audio and video sections, which you’re all here for anyway.  However, I won’t be that reviewer who simply does an unboxing or says the movie is good.  I’ll give you a little bit of expose.  If you’re not interested, well then scroll down 2 screenshots below and check out how things look.  So without further ado… Continue reading ‘Alien 40th Anniversary (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

The Karate Kid – 35th Anniversary Edition (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Karate Kid 4K ReviewThe Karate Kid is one of those films that was almost always a big part of my movie watching as a kid.  I was drawn to the underdog story of Daniel Larusso, who with a great deal of spunk and determination proved himself to be a teenage hero for some.  I was so excited to see this 35thAnniversary Edition announced earlier in the year and when it arrived I was immediately ready to give it a watch!  This time, for me anyway, felt like the first time.  Check out my review of this April 16th release down below. Glass (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Glass 4K ReviewI can’t say I ever thought the day would come where we’d be living in a world in which an exists a sequel to 2000’s Unbreakable whether lone two of them.   I knew there was always interest in the property, but given the downward spiral of M. Night Shayamalan’s career for awhile I never thought we’d see anything spectacular from him again.  A movie he wrote in 2010 called Devil kind of peaked my curiosity, but imagine my surprise when early reviews of 2016’s Split came with mentions of a tie-in to the Unbreakable universe.  That news practically broke the Internet (I’m exaggerating) and even further Split was actually a really great film to boot.  James McAvoy got robbed of an Academy nod for his exceptional performance, but I digress.  More importantly M. Night was suddenly back!  People were instantly in his corner and the third film in the trilogy, Glass, was fast-tracked for our viewing pleasure here now on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray April 16th.

The Mule (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

The Mule 4K ReviewClint Eastwood returns to the role of filmmaker and actor with The Mule.  I am personally always excited to check out a new Eastwood movie. Whether he is acting or directing, stylistically he always seems to strike a chord with me as a viewer and film fanatic.  This particular movie did just that, although with a few odd detours.  Follow down below as we explore everything about The Mule, which was recently released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray this past Tuesday (April 2nd). Bumblebee (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

While I had never been all in on the modern day Transformers films like childhood me would have hoped, oddly enough, the spin-off prequel film Bumblebee not only garnered my attention through production. And in on odd spin of events it won over my heart completely and even made my 10 favorite films list for last year. I don’t know that there’s a series that won me over completely like this on the 6th entry (Fast & Furious movies got me at 5). In actuality its the 7th theatrical Transformers feature if you count the original animated film (Which I do love). Paramount is bringing this film set in the VHS hey-day to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray on April 2nd. Pre-order using the Amazon link below, or by signing up to hold a copy at your local Phar-Mor.

Aquaman (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Aquaman (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)It was only a matter of time I suppose, but here we are and low and behold we unbelievably, finally have an Aquaman movie.  The masterful James Wan pulled off the what was almost deemed the impossible.  He defied the odds and marvelously brought to the big screen an absurd superhero project, which has been in development hell since 2004.  That’s right we finally get the Aquaman!  Now I have never been that big on the character like most hardcore DC Comics fans, but Wan has my full attention now.  The character of Aquaman for me amounted to very little in both Batman v. Superman and Justice League.  However, here he finally has a spotlight shining brightly upon him and actor Jason Momoa and his larger-than-life charisma seized the opportunity.  As a result I was made not only a fan of Aquaman, but ultimately a believer in this property.

Mary Poppins Returns (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Disney has been revisiting many of their hand-drawn animated classics of yesteryear and been giving human (Or computer animated) life to them for a whole new generation with great degrees of success. Mary Poppins Returns takes at taking one of their live-action classics (That also featured a handful of hand-drawn animation) and giving it a lega-sequel of all its own.  The film proved a solid hit and one of the biggest movies of the holiday season, but not the monster I think they were expecting over that leggy time period. Its arriving quickly now, on shelves for 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray on March 19th. At some point the link below will be active, so come back around to see if you can log yourself an Amazon pre-order. Lord Of War (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Lionsgate is bringing an underseen gem in the Nicholas Cage/Ethan Hawke/Jared Leto arms drama/thriller to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray. While their updates of catalog titles seems random sometime at others headscratching, Lord of War feels like a its somewhere in the middle of that. The film landed in the mid of maybe Nic Cage’s last great run of films back in the first half of the 00s (Matchstick Men – National Treasure – Lord of War – The Weather Man). Lionsgate was a studio trying to break out from just being Jigsaw and Madea movies and were trying their best at something prestige with a movie like this. Its one that I think people should definitely revisit or check out for the first time as it surprised me back in 2005. You can grab yourself this glorious new 4K release on March 19th using the Amazon linkage below.  Continue reading ‘Lord Of War (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Mortal Engines (4K UHD Blu-ray)

Modern audiences are oddly very weary on giving an opportune chance to any fantasy or science fiction adventure that clearly looks like something new. They may be put off by it being “weird” or unfamiliar while forgetting at one time, Star Wars was also weird and unfamiliar. I’m not saying everything they pass up on is a complete gem, but the opening weekend excitement is either rarely there (Guardians of the Galaxy, but that’s mostly based on brand awareness), barely there (Alita) or nonexistent (Valerian). Mortal Engines was one of 2018’s biggest bombs at the box office and I found little to no one aside from open minded film geeks like myself, craving new fantasy worlds and lore, excited for it. The main turn off for something like this appears to merely be that it isn’t based off anything or the nostalgic return of something familiar. Yet in the meantime, all I hear is the gripe of “There’s nothing original anymore”. WHAT DO YOU WANT? Haha! While I wanted to see Mortal Engines, life wouldn’t allow the time (And I DO normally see stuff like this, as I paid money to see Jupiter Ascending in theaters even), so this will be more first outing and can be yours when it arrives on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray March 12th. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald returned audiences to the Wizard World that was the Wizarding World before that of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. New Scamander and company are back in action but this time we are promised are harder tie in to the previous novels/films we’d seen before. No way around it, the film overall seemed to not take off with audiences as much as Where To Find them to significantly less money and appreciation. We’ll be able to further study (Or for some, check out for the first time) when the second of the Harry Potter prequel series makes its 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray debut on March 12th. Preorder the film using the Amazon link provided below the review. Continue reading ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Creed II (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Creed II 4K ReviewWhere do I even begin here?  I don’t want to bore my readers over and over talking about how much these Rocky franchise of movies adoringly mean to me.   They are absolutely everything to me!   They are my main sources of both perseverance and inspiration in life.  One could even them call them my soundtrack for success, but I digress.  If you’re interested in knowing the full story, you can catch up here and here on all that monkey business.  Instead I want to keenly focus on the continuing storyline of Adonis Creed (Jordan), which coincidentally also involves the legendary character of Rocky Balboa (Stallone).  However, the latter is just the icing on the cake.  Whereas the first film in the “Creed” series, also titled Creed, was very much an origin film of this character Creed II plays out as a throwback to an older Rocky sequel (we’ll get more into that down below).
