The LEGO Ninjago Movie (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Apologies on the tardiness of this review as its been out for a month now (December 12th was the street date for this release), but its brand new to me as I’ve just received it. The second LEGO movie of 2017, following on the heels of the very successful LEGO Batman Movie which itself followed the hugely successful The LEGO Movie. The LEGO Ninjago Movie was the first test of brand loyalty with the LEGO “franchise” and well, it didn’t have Batman and people clearly knew this wasn’t the further adventures of Emmett and Wyldstyle.  Yeah, the movie massively underperformed in comparison to those two films. Ninjago is a more strict to LEGO brand, so they may give a go with a more known entity the next time around. As I mentioned, the film is already available, so if you don’t have it and you want or need it, check out the Amazon link below and help yourself and help the site at the same time when ordering. Jigsaw (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

After seven years away, the Saw franchise returned to scare up some more traps for the Halloween season. The eighth installment wouldn’t admit as much with the title, opting for the John Rambo/Rocky Balboa route of naming it after its title character’s moniker. John Kramer would have been an interesting one to call it.  The film opened to some solid box office returns due to the budget being so low, but wound up being the second lowest grossing of the series both in terms of domestic and worldwide box office. Hopefully this isn’t the of Billy the Puppet’s run. As with Freddy, Jason, Michael, etc…no matter how bad an installment or how long a break, I enjoy seeing these franchise horror icons keep going. You’ll be able to pick up the first 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray of the series with Jigsaw when it springs the trap on January 23rd. Continue reading ‘Jigsaw (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

IT (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

IT 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray ReviewI wish I could be cool and say I love Stephen King’s 1986 novel IT.  The truth is I’d be lying.  Not only did I never read it but nor have I ever seen the 1990 network television miniseries either.  I know.  I suck.  It goes unsaid that I lived a very sheltered childhood up in Cleveland, Ohio.  Thank goodness I left there five years ago and grew into the responsible young adult you all know and love now.  Ha!  So let’s fast forward some 30 years here since the book first came out and now IT receives a modernized (so to speak as still set in the nostalgia of the 80’s) adaption on the big screen.  It’s actually part of something bigger too as this American Rated-R horror film is just the first installment of a planned two parts.  Truth be told you had me at Rated-R.  Let’s take a closer look down below at what IT (also known as IT: Part 1 – The Loser’s Club) is all about.  Join me down below and you’ll float too.

Blade Runner 2049 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Blade Runner 2049 opened in the fall of 2017 to critical raves.  However, the whole way along, many were concerned with the almost three hour runtime coupled with an R rating. The film also was the sequel to one of the biggest cult favorites of all time, but a notable box office bomb as well. And, like father like daughter (hehe), the film had a very low opening weekend leading to a box office disappointment. Had the film not cost 150 million, maybe it doesn’t hurt so much. This was a split juncture, with Warner Bros only being able to rake in the domestic take and Sony handling the overseas.  As such, we are in the US and I’ll be here reviewing the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray of the film from Warner Bros. They wow’d me last year with their presentation of the original, so I’m hoping for more of that here in this picture. You’ll be able to compliment the 5 cuts of the original film on Blu-ray with just this one theatrical version on January 23rd. Continue reading ‘Blade Runner 2049 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Across The Universe (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Just missing its tenth anniversary, Julie Taymor’s visionary Beatles-infused musical, Across the Universe will land itself on the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format in the second week of January.  The film, nominated for an Academy Award in the category of costume design, was met with mixed reviews upon its delayed release by critics. It wasn’t a box office smash by any means either, but seemingly found some life and fandom in the home video afterlife as well as landing it on more than a few critics end of the year top 10 lists. Whatever your thoughts, there’s no doubt this movie is a terrific candidate for the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format. You can check it out for yourself by putting in a pre-order in the Amazon link at the bottom to have it on its street date, January 9th. Christopher Nolan 4K Collection (4K UHD Review & Unboxing)

Christopher Nolan 4K Collection ReviewComparable to what should seem like the enjoyment of seeing a slew of gifts under the tree on Christmas morning why is the 4K enthusiast community in such an uproar over the Christopher Nolan 4K Collection?  We’ll tackle that question down below, but right now let’s take a moment to pause in thought about this monumental release.  Not only did it take a lot of work to get the three different studios to agree releasing them all in one boxset, but ladies and gentlemen this 7 films in 4K from one of the greatest directors of our time, Christopher Nolan.  Sure we’re missing several titles within it, but beggars can’t be choosers.  Even if they just released The Dark Knight only on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray,  I would have been like a pig rolling around in mud.  However, they didn’t stop just there.  This historic 4K boxset released by Warner Bros. includes The Prestige, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar and Dunkirk.  Let’s take a closer look at this set down below and I promise to try and answer that question I posed in the beginning of this paragraph the best I can. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Judgement Day has come for 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray fans.  One of the most celebrated sequels and blockbuster films of all time, Terminator 2: Judgement Day is making the leap to the newest format. Likely coming in lieu of its 3D re-release in theaters this past August, James Cameron’s time travel/post apocalyptic/cyborg action opus boasted a brand new 4K restoration. This release was originally slated for an early October release, then delayed til the end of that month, followed by another delay that was pretty much “at some point we’ll get to it”. Well, now they have and its available. Release date was December 26th, and you can order the film using the Amazon link below. Could the original Terminator please be coming very soon? Jumanji (4k UHD Blu-ray review)

Jumanji involves two orphaned children (of course they’re orphans) who move into a long forgotten and abandoned house. They find a board game that unleashes a large variety of wild hairy beasts including Robin Williams. It so happens that Alan parrish (Williams) has been living in ht board game for nearly 30 years waiting for someone to release him. Thats about as deep as the film gets as its mainly a loose skeleton to have endless dull unimaginative action sequences that have no real bearing on the development of characters or plot.

American Made (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

American Made 4K ReviewUp until the critically unaccepted Mummy this year Tom Cruise seemed to be on an unstoppable “cruise” control.  One action film after another his Hollywood success has been as magical as his rugged, vampire good looks.  However, like I always tell my fiancée eventually all good things must come to an end.  I was one of the few who managed to see the good in the Mummy, but everyone is now waiting to see what the man’s next move is.  And that’s why we’re here today ladies and gentlemen.  In what seems like an odd choice for Cruise he is now portraying a a former TWA pilot who became a drug and weapon smuggler in Universal’s American Made.  I must admit though the trailers for this movie made it look like a lot of fun with a fully energized Tom Cruise to boot.  Only you can answer that million dollar question of whether it’s any good by reading on to find out if it’s as entertaining as the trailer made it out to be or just a brilliant editing job in disguise.  Y’all remember Suicide Squad right?

mother! (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

We’re currently in the middle of a heated debate about a divisive Star Wars film, but earlier in the year we had a moment with a little arthouse picture that got a wide release. Darren Aronofsky returned to more or less his roots with the very challenging and not audience friendly mother! starring Jennifer Lawrence. The film saw critical praise (Which, seemingly has gone down since its release) and audience ire. The film outright bombed, which means many of you probably didn’t even go to see it in the theaters. Well, now’s your chance to take a look at it in the comfort of your own home. And why not give the film a gander on the best possible format while you’re at it? On December 19th, this trivial film will be available on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray for your digestion. Order yourself a copy if you loved it or are curious from the Amazon link provided below. Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Kingsman 2 4K The Golden Circle ReviewFirst there was Matthew Vaughn and Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass in 2010 and then there was Kingsman: The Secret Service (Aaron Neuwirth’s review of it all here and mine) in 2014.  Needless to say I’m a big fan of both.   Now we have the sequel here titled Kingsman: The Golden Circle.  I was one of the lucky ones to be able to attend the Hall H Comic-Con panel in San Diego for this action spy flick this past July (see Jordan Grout’s coverage of it all here).  Not only did I get an orange/white tuxedo t-shirt and a rad Kingsman fidget spinner, but I also witnessed the entire opening sequence, which is quite breathtaking, and two awesome clips that whet my appetite greater than the thought of Red Robin’s steak fries covered in that yummy sodium laced seasoning of theirs.  You picking up what I’m dropping?  While outside of a flashback Kingsman: The Golden Circle may not include the exotic mummy, Sofia Boutella, this time around (for obvious reasons) it does have one hell of an all-star studded lineup.  If you choose to accept this mission, then let me fill you in on everything below.

Interstellar (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Interstellar 4K ReviewWho here is not looking forward to this December 19th Interstellar 4K release on Ultra HD Blu-ray, not to mention the rest of Christopher Nolan films previously announced here?  Yes we’re not getting a few of his movies and no we’re not getting new atmospheric surround audio packages, but we’re getting something so much more important.  We’re getting some of Nolan’s 5-star masterpieces on the best looking home video format!  Who wants to argue with me there?  You wouldn’t even be reading this review here if you weren’t a Nolan fan.  Interstellar and I have an interesting love/hate relationship with each other.  My take on it all can be found below.  It was originally published in my 2015 Blu-ray review of it all here.  However, my observations on the audio and video presentations of this Interstellar 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release are all new.  So there’s that!  Also, for those of you who may have missed it make sure you check out Brandon Peters’ 4K review of Dunkirk here.  Now let’s get started!

Men In Black Trilogy: 20th Anniversary (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Men In Black is 20 years old? Damn! Within a period of years it managed to put out a trilogy of films.  It has proved to be a well that Will Smith has gone back to time and time again to grab himself a little piece of blockbuster. Recently it had made waves when there as talk that the Jonah Hill/Channing Tatum-led 21 Jump Street relaunch series would spend its third film crossing over with the Men In Black franchise. Now THAT is something that would have been so insane that I would have KILLED to see it. Unfortunately that’s not coming to fruition probably ever. But, what is coming fruition for the 20th anniversary is a nice 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray box set. The set features all the same features as before, but with a new 4K transfer and Dolby Atmos tracks. And its available now. So order yourself a copy from the Amazon linkage you find below at the very bottom. Continue reading ‘Men In Black Trilogy: 20th Anniversary (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Dunkirk (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Christopher Nolan stands as one of maybe our last great filmmakers that have bridged the gap of their visions to big budget mainstream productions. While he gained esteem and clout through making some Batman films, he’s used it to distance himself and become a household name among directors not unlike Quentin Tarantino or Steven Spielberg. His films are original and his name attached to it make the film an event. They are both impressive and success stories at the box office. His latest, a passionate endeavor on the more little known battle of Dunkirk, amazed audiences and critics alike with its bold choice to be primarily shot in IMAX. While nobody’s home is going to accurately replicate that experience, you’ll still be able to enjoy this landmark war film when it comes to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray on December 19th as a standalone or part of the 4K Ultra-HD Christopher Nolan box set.
