xXx: Return of Xander Cage (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

xXx: Return of Xander Cage (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)While I have been completely disgusted by what has been transpiring with the divided American public this year (rioting, violence, demonstrations, destruction, etc) since the Presidential Inauguration there’s no doubt about it, the women very much have the power in xXx: Return of Xander Cage.  Feminists and enemies of President Trump cannot argue that.  Without the many women players in this particular outing our titular hero would not have been the smashing success he is.  You hear that feminists? Equal opportunities are everywhere in this new Paramount outing, which if you’re keeping score is the third film in this wild xXx action franchise.  So now that I have my little political rant off my chest, as I too feel like a piece of meat at times, let’s talk about the good, the bad and the ugly in xXx: Return of Xander Cage.

Unforgiven (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Back in my old quality control days for Blu-ray and DVD, it also included the short lived HD-DVD format. Toshiba’s failed high definition discs did beat Blu-ray to market. In the testing world, I’ve mentioned the first two titles were Goodfellas and Million Dollar Baby. Well, the third was Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven. This was the one that truly showcased how much you could cram on a disc (And even after, that would be surpassed). Now, for the 25th anniversary of one of the greatest Westerns of all time (You could argue THE greatest), its going to dabble in the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format. Not only is it getting a new transfer, but finally it will be equipped with lossless audio carrying over all of the previous bonus material. You can pre-order the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray in time to have it on release day of May 16th. Continue reading ‘Unforgiven (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Resident Evil the Final Chapter I honestly never saw this happening when I walked out of this one theatrically.  My first viewing of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter left me with a giddy smile on my face rather than one of disgust and regret.  After covering Resident Evil: Afterlife here on 4K Ultra HD and rewatching Retribution in preparation for this one I wasn’t sure about my decision to check out The Final Chapter, especially in the theater.  I debated waiting for this inevitable home media release, but Jordan Grout kind of gave me the courage needed to check it out.  I even spent the eight bucks and change to see it in 3-D.  The latter wasn’t worth it, but the decision to check out The Final Chapter so was.  I had the time of my life.  Okay, I’m exaggerating.  How about this?  I had the best experience in a theater considering it was the dreaded month of January.  Is that better?  Who would have ever thunk it?  I am finally able to give a Resident Evil film a favorable score of 3.  I’ll be darn as its the last one too and in my opinion they saved the best for last.  It’s a high octane thrill ride!

Fifty Shades Darker Unrated Edition (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Fifty Shades Darker 4KSo yeah I’m a guy.  And yes I have not only reviewed Fifty Shades Darker here on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, but this is admittedly the second time I saw the film.  The first was in the theater!  Okay, here’s my man card.  The truth of the story is like the first film the studio strategically releases this title anchored on the Hallmark holiday of Valentine’s Day.  So us guys have no choice but to take our women out to see this one.  Just like paying taxes each year it’s our civic duty to the special ladies in our lives.  Truth be told also that I actually read the first novel in this franchise.  I did not like it enough to warrant reading the subsequent novels, but I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t the least bit curious as to what happens to Anna and Mr. Grey.  So that’s my lovely lead in to this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray review.  You guys wanna suffer some more paragraphs with me?  Come on!  Misery loves company. 3:10 To Yuma (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Well, what do you know? Just like that, James Mangold’s 3:10 To Yuma is 10 years old this year.  Doesn’t feel like its been that long. Mangold is seeing some of his greatest success (Critical & Box Office) this year, too with the Hugh Jackman-Wolverine sendoff Logan. 3:10 To Yuma is one of his strongest films and one of the best westerns (not the hotel chain) of the 2000s. When people whine and moan about remakes, here is a prime candidate and a more modern one to throw in their faces as to prove their whole false generality of “remakes/reboots/reimaginings suck” tiredness as false. Lionsgate is now bringing it over to the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format alongside the Expendables movies on May 2nd. Check out or revisit this terrific western with a great enhanced picture featuring HDR and an all new DTS:X audio track! Continue reading ‘3:10 To Yuma (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

The Expendables 2 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Sylvester Stallone’s all action heroes all the time series The Expendables will be complete now on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with Lionsgate’s releasing of the first two films come May 2nd.  Both are seeing just a picture and audio update on the films themselves as no new bonus features are being added to these new editions. As a matter of fact, the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc contains no supplemental features. But, each release comes with the standard Blu-ray release of the theatrical version of the film and with that comes all of its bonus material (Including a full Comic Con panel and feature length documentary on making the film).  Be sure to pre-order yourself a copy today to ensure you have both of these muscle-heavy films on May 2nd. This review will be covering the 2012 sequel that brought in Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris to the world of Barney Ross. Continue reading ‘The Expendables 2 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

La La Land (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Who would have thought the innocent and just plain enjoyable La La Land from Damien Chazelle would have drawn up so much drama and controversy after being loved upon its launch.  But that’s Oscar season for you. One minute you’re the favorite, and when you received all the (Well deserved) praise and award accolades to go with it, then its cool to turn the tables and bring the hate. It happens every year. Word to the wise: despite who wins an award, you can love BOTH La La Land and Moonlight. Nothing says you can’t. While it was my favorite film of 2017, I’m relieved La La Land lost the Best Picture award (Shortly after winning it) to Moonlight as I was tiring over all the crap it was getting, as that would have only brought on more. Chazelle just made a loving, charming and fun little film harkening to a that all of a sudden became some sort of evil film promoting racism and being incredibly misguided. If you missed this wonderful film, you’ll be able to check it out on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD April 25th. Continue reading ‘La La Land (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Underworld Blood Wars (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Underworld Blood Wars (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)It wasn’t until I completed my Christmas Eve review of Underworld on 4K Blu-ray (here) that I realized how hated the franchise was in my inner circle of confidants.  I felt like a minority for the first time in my life.  However, that’s not to say there aren’t fans out there because there totally are.  All you have to do is look no further than the endless forums of fans proclaiming their love for the 2003 film now on 4K Ultra HD to realize there’s still a viable fanbase out there.  Although I don’t think any one of them can honestly look me in the eyes without smirking and say 2012’s Awakening was the strongest of the franchise and deserved a follow-up.  I would have been A-okay if that was the final nail in the coffin, but low and behold we have a new entry in the seemingly never-ending franchise, that truly lives up to its subject matter…vampires.  It’s 2016 folks.  Once again the new Underworld film, this time dubbed Blood Wars, saw a spectacular January theatrical release date.  We all know what that means for films like these so let’s now take a look at how well Blood Wars fairs down below. Planet Earth II (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Planet Earth II (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)Like it or not I’m going to start this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray review of Planet Earth II off by admitting I’m not generally a fan of documentaries.  Unless the subject matter really interests me I tend to find them boring and rather uninteresting.  I’m sorry.  I’m just wired ignorantly like that.  However, if you’re and A//V enthusiast like us all here there’s no denying the special place Planet Earth holds in all our Blu-ray hearts.  Back in 2006 it was one of the first television series to grace the format with its HD beauty.  It showcased the possibilities of how grand HD video looked in the home front and basically gave Blu-ray (and HD-DVD at the time) a reason to exist.  Now fast forward ten years and we have a new home format competing for our living rooms, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.  Coincidentally we have a new season of Planet Earth to properly display too.  So in essence there’s really no better way to celebrate the first television series on the new 4K home format than by bringing BBC’s Planet Earth II onto the scene once again.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

In celebration of the 4K Ultra HD release Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, the latest adventure and series starter in the wizarding world lived in by J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, Warner Bros is format jumping the original films in the series.  They’ll all get that higher resolution with High Dynamic Range applied to them, to look sharper, prettier and newer.  In my opinion, Warner Bros has been one of the more impressive studios when it comes to upgrading their catalog titles to 4K.  One would think they are going to a lot of attention to one of their biggest franchises ever.  They are releasing them in waves, with the four David Yates films (The back half of the series) being the first to come out.  No date is set yet for the first four, but they’ll be here soon enough.  This review will focus on the final chapter of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 from 2011.  It, and the others will be available March 28th. Why Him? (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Why Him? is ordinarily not the kind of film I would go see in the theaters.  Had it not been for two key factors I don’t think I would have gone.  First it had the very irresistible and hilarious trailers on its side.   That Red-band one was insane.  Although I went in hoping that all the funny parts were not included in said trailers.  Second, there was the nod to “from the makers of I Love You Man.”  I love that comedy flick!  So as you can see right from the get go I was walking into Why Him? ahead in the count.  Now is the moment of truth and also the chance to have fun with the title’s question mark.  What did I think of Why Him?  That is the question we are all pondering here, right?  Why Him? The Smurfs (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Ahh…the Smurfs. That song; La la la-la la la, Sing a happy song. La la la-la la la, Smurf it all day long. La la la-la la la. Smurf along with me! La la la-la la la. Simple as can be. Next time you’re feeling blue just let a smile begin, Happy things will come to you..So smurf yourself a grin! La la la-la la la, Now you know the tune, You’ll be Smurfing soon! When I was a kid, I was singing along, but after this movie, maybe I’m more in tuned to what cartoon Gargamel said during that opening sequence in the animated (Well, 2D television cartoon animated)  “Oooooo I hate Smurfs! I’ll get you, I’ll get all of you if it’s the last thing I ever do! hehehehe!” Oh yeah, we’re here reviewing the debut of the 2011 film on 4K UHD Blu-ray.  The sequel to the film is already available on the format (One of the launch titles), but this one is jumping in on March 28th. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

The wizarding world of Harry Potter led one of the most impressive runs in cinematic franchise history.  Not only did all seven books in the series get adapted, but there were eight films.  Aside from one major change due to a death, the films managed to keep its cast intact for the entire telling of J.K. Rowling’s story.  Harry Potter started before brand IP became a major thing and it left us as it was becoming one.  Being that its one of the most successful and popular cinematic IPs ever, it could only lay dormant for so long.  What direction to go with it now that a major eight film story has taken place and the characters completed their important arcs? Well, the answer is backward. J.K. Rowling has returned to give us a new story based loosely off the adventures of a fictional author of a book in the wizarding world.  And back in November, we began what is to be a five film journey on its own about events well before even Harry Potter’s parents were around.  The magic was not gone, as Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them made almost a billion dollars worldwide. It now makes its way to 4K Ultra-HD and Blu-ray March 28th. Continue reading ‘Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Sing (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Illumination Entertainment, the animation studio most known for those darn Minions.  Actually, I enjoy the Despicable Me films, its just the one that focused on the little side characters was a giant waste of time (Though, I’m sure those seven and under probably loved it).  While that’s the flagship, they’ve actually carved quite a remarkable track record in six short years.  All but two of their films have made over a half a billion dollars worldwide.  Which, one of those two was The Lorax which did exceedingly well at 348 million worldwide.  They hit big in summer and winter in 2016, showing they are much more than the Minion house.  The Secret Life of Pets almost made a billion dollars in the summer and the film we are reviewing here, Sing, made over half a billion running up against Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.  They appear to be a major force to be reckoned with, holding their own in a world usually owned by Disney and Pixar.  Sing proved to be quite popular, not just with audiences, but seemingly winning over critics as well.  It comes to 4K UHD Blu-ray on March 21st!
