Oblivion (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

OblivionOblivion is one of those extra special theatrical experiences that I’ll never forget in life.  I owe it all to Aaron Neuwirth.  The year was 2013 and my significant other and I had just moved down to Austin, TX from Cleveland, OH.  This was before Cleveland was a championship town.  We were both lost down here like deer in headlights.  A learning opportunity put me in the close vicinity of staff writer Aaron Neuwirth for a week.  He took me in that Sunday evening for Game of Thrones and even bought a roast beef sub to keep my stomach occupied.  The very next day is when the magic happened.  I forget what we had planned to do, but Aaron texted me and said do you want to see Oblivion.  Back then I wasn’t much of a Tom Cruise fan, but I do like a good science fiction feature.  Plus I was in posh California.  Why would I say no?  So I accepted his invitation.  Surely it wasn’t just so he could justify riding in the carpool lane the entire way there.  I’m kidding!  Ha ha. Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Watchmen The Ultimate Cut 4K UHDThis review is going to be a challenge for me.  You see, I’m not the world’s biggest Watchmen fan by any means.  The limited comic series of the same name bores me.  I also know how devastating that must be to read in the third sentence of a review.  However, let the record show, I’ve always been a fan of Zack Snyder’s movie adaptation of the property.  After all, it’s what paved the way for Rated-R superhero flicks like Kick-Ass or this year’s Deadpool to even exist.  How can you not love it?  It ingeniously integrates three classic genres into one cohesive, albeit long film.  Those of course are science fiction, superhero and what movie aficionados would brand as noir mystery.  Luckily for me, and for all you fans out there, Warner Bros. brought this big, bold adventure to the brand-new HD format, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.  I can’t be anymore excited about it!  I’m ready to begin here! Man of Steel (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Man of Steel 4K UHDWhen I first found out they were attempting to go down the road of reinventing, re-branding and rebooting the legendary Superman franchise I just flat out laughed.  Then I found out Watchmen’s Zack Snyder was directing the project.  I have absolutely nothing against the looks and visual style of his films.  I know Snyder has a lot of potential.  After all he did do 300 and created one of the most stunning movie intros ever, in my opinion, in Sucker Punch.  So the cat has talent, that much I can’t deny.  However, then it became known that Christopher Nolan was going to be serving as a producer.   I thought maybe, just maybe, under the tutelage of King Nolan, Snyder could possibly nail it on the head and get Superman right this time out.  After all, there’s no doubt that this franchise needs a hero.  If anybody can do it, it’s definitely Nolan.  I have explicit faith in Nolan, and therefore I entrusted my faith in Snyder too. So prepare to soar and be dazzled (because we’re talking about Superman after all).  This is 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray review is made out of steel so treat it accordingly. Criminal (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Criminal 4K Ultra HD Blu-rayYou know how movies come and go from the theater?  There always seems to be  that one a year where you say to yourself  that one got away from me.  You wish you could have made it to the theater to see it.  However, before you knew it you either forgot about it or the movie dissipated from the cinema.  Well, Criminal is one of those films for me in 2016.  I was full of euphoria after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (shameless plug of my 4K review here).  Wonder Woman is in this!  So why not?  Could Criminal really be as awful as the critics say with Kevin Costner in the starring role?  It also has Ryan Reynolds, Gary Oldman and honeys Alice Eve and Antje Traue.  How bad can it really be?  Let’s put this UHD disc in and press play. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Ultimate Edition (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Batman v Superman- Dawn of Justice (4K Ultra HD)Before I begin with my review here I just want to take a moment to reflect upon the fact that when you think about it, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Ultimate Edition is the biggest 4K UHD Blu-ray title to hit the infant format since its debut earlier this year.  Did that monumental thought sink in already?  It’s a pretty heavy burden to ask anybody to thoroughly review this hotly anticipated title on the premium format of “my choice” now.  Challenge accepted because let’s face it, honors like this don’t come to one just every day.  Oh no!  This is a special day here on Why So Blu.  This is the day I get to recap and review my favorite film of the year so far (sad huh?) in the best presentation possible that money can buy.  Believe me when I say this to you.  These 4K UHD Blu-ray titles are money.  Alright, my moment of reflection has ended.  We can begin.  Commencing countdown.  Feeding the disc to the Samsung now. Eddie The Eagle (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Eddie the Eagle 4KI can assure you that before I opened my door to the UPS man delivering a package from Fox, I knew absolutely nothing about Eddie the Eagle other than Aaaron Neuwirth reviewed the regular Blu-ray version of it over here.  I asked several friends via text if they ever saw this film or knew anything about it.  While everyone basically said no, one did say yes and said he remembered actually watching Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards in the Olympic Games back in the late 80’s.  He’s nostalgic like that.  So that made me want to do my own research, of course via a Google search box. Independence Day: 20th Anniversary Edition (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Independence Day 4K Blu-rayI’m spending the time before the upcoming holiday weekend to write about the aptly titled Independence Day, now some 20 years old and counting.  Fox provided us with a regular Blu-ray version of this 20th Anniversary releases, which Aaron Neuwirth reviewed enthusiastically over here, but today I’m coming at you with the best presentation this film has ever seen on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format.  However, I digress for the moment as I want to spend the next few paragraphs talking about what the 1996 science-fiction action flick meant to me.  It is my belief that Independence Day accomplished three major things things, if not more.  First, it ushered in the era of what all now know of as the obligatory, annual large-scale disaster films that plague the summer box office.  Second, it became a star vehicle for Will Smith and opened doors to him in Hollywood I’m sure he never imagined despite the bright, rising star he already was.  And finally, Independence Day set the bar for all sci-fi action movies to follow with its then groundbreaking effects. Creed (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Creed 4K Blu-ray ReviewFirst off, I wanted to let everyone know that Warner Bros. did not supply this 4K UHD Blu-ray for me to review, but instead I purchased it myself out of my love and affinity for the Rocky franchise, and most recently Creed in this case (as I simply could not resist that gorgeous, awe-inspiring black slip cover).  I’ll admit though that I’m a few months late to this 4K Blu-ray party, but what matters most is that I’m here now, and I’m staying.  Thus far the 4K UHD Blu-ray format has been a rewarding experience, but I’ll admit to having a few system hiccups (don’t make the mistake of buying Lionsgate’s Sicario 4K Blu-ray) since my review of the new equipment I possess here.  You have to expect that from early adoption of technology, right?  Nevertheless, you can’t dispute how eye-popping spectacular things are on the Sony XBR-65X930D 4K display, but I digress.  We’re gathered here today to not only talk about my love for Creed and what the Rocky franchise may or may not mean to me, but more importantly how incredibly beautiful Creed is in 4K UHD Blu-ray.  Let’s begin!

Star Trek Into Darkness (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Star Trek Into Darkness UHD 4K Blu-ray ReviewI will kind of start this review by echoing what I said over here in my first 4K UHD review of Star Trek.  It was two months ago when Paramount Home Media Distribution announced that director J.J. Abrams’ global blockbusters Star Trek and the reason why we are all here, Star Trek Into Darkness, would be the studio’s first two titles released on the new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format.  The releases also coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise in 2016.  Don’t know what 4K Blu-ray is all about? Well, it’s simple.  4K UHD represents the next evolution in home entertainment, offering four times the resolution and more than double the number of colors available with full HD.  In addition, these  4K UHD releases deliver exceptional vibrancy and contrast through High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology, which reveals hidden details and shades of color that more closely mimic real life.  So now that we have that mumbo jumbo out of the way what do you say we get started?
