The story of a loving father who dons a clown outfit and makeup to perform at his son’s sixth birthday, only to later discover that the costume – red nose and wig included– will not come off and his own personality changing in a horrific fashion. The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (Blu-ray Review)
In the beginning, the idea of producer Ryan Murphy being involved with a spin-off series of American Horror Story titled American Crime Story, with a focus on the O.J. Simpson murder trial for the first season, seemed risky to say the least. Now you put in a fantastic ensemble cast, use Jeffrey Tobin’s bestselling novel, The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson as a framework for the story and relegate Murphy to merely a director on a few episodes and you have a much better chance of making something worthwhile. As it turns out, not only was The People v. O.J. Simpson good, it is one of the best seasons of television this year and certainly worthy of its 22 Emmy nominations (as of this posting). Now the series in on Blu-ray for many to dig into.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)
Ever since it was announced way back when that the beautiful, thumb challenged, mother of three Megan Fox would star as April O’Neil in an all-new live action adventure/reincarnation feature film of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I knew things were completely on the right path. Cowabunga! I was so right! While the 2014 outing was rather silly and probably inconsequential to the survival of the TMNT brand as a whole (the Nickelodeon cartoon carries it alone), the end result was helluva lot of fun to be had (see my movie review here). So it’s with great joy, giddiness and absolutely no exacerbation that I in an unbiased fashion tackle the green subject matter contained within this review, the sequel to the 2014 Paramount hit, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, with the utmost of care, caution and precious handling. After all, these are cute, little green turtles. But who we kidding? These turtles love to kick arse! Turtle power! South Park The Complete 19th Season (Blu-ray Review)
Alright everybody, listen up. The best full season of “South Park” in the 20 years of the show’s existence has arrives soon on Blu-ray and it is a must watch for fans, ex-fans, and non-fans of the series alike. Making their first foray into a serialized style, where the season has a full arc and things are carried over from one episode to another, Trey Parker and Matt Stone have crafted a work of hilarity and thoughtfulness. There is so much to like about what this season means for the series and for the four foul-mouthed little boys from that sleepy Colorado town. The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Ninth Season (Blu-ray Review)
It’s time for my September ritual! The Big Bang Theory returns to the Blu-ray format. Truth be told I’m excited to be covering the release for the third year in a row now. You can find my Blu-ray coverage of season seven here and eight over here. This year it’s the complete ninth season right here baby. Warner Bros. always does a bang up on these seasonal Blu-ray releases. That’s why I’m overjoyed to be tackling this today and hopefully for years to come. They can never end the Big Bang Theory from airing anew for years to come can they? Don’t answer that! I want to be appreciative for what I have here. Therefore, let’s talk The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Ninth Season. Continue reading ‘The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Ninth Season (Blu-ray Review)’
The Immortal Story – Criterion Collection (Blu-ray Review)
Newly released on Blu-Ray by The Criterion Collection comes The Immortal Story, the first color production directed by Orson Welles (Citizen Kane, Touch of Evil). As can be expected by the curators at Criterion, this release has been cleaned up, freshly transferred and given a ton of love by way of commentary, interviews, an included documentary about Welles, and an essay on the film. If, like myself, one is met with the thought “The Immortal Story? I have never heard of that,” then what a delightful opportunity to discover something worth treasuring we have been given. Tenebrae (Blu-ray Review)
Italian terror master Dario Argento elevates the Giallo genre to new heights with 1982’s TENEBRAE, a darkly humorous, futuristic and notoriously grisly horror film many consider to be one of his finest works. Following its successful limited edition Steelbook™ release earlier this year, Synapse Films is thrilled to bring this legendary Italian horror classic into a wide release. Featuring an amazing synth-music score from Claudio Simonetti, Fabio Pignatelli and Massimo Morante (formerly of Italian progressive-rock band, Goblin), this all-new 1080p high-definition TENEBRAE release was created from the original uncut camera negative. The film also stars screen legend John Saxon (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), Daria Nicolodi (Dario Argento’s PHENOMENA) and John Steiner (CALIGULA). Continue reading ‘Tenebrae (Blu-ray Review)’

Now You See Me 2 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)
Now You See Me 2 won’t get any points for originality in the title department. There’s also the absence of one of the Fourth Horseman, Isla Fisher’s character, to explain. However, what I was at least hoping for here was some fun magic, deception and illusion tricks. That much the first film managed to provide. So why can’t the sequel? That’s what I hope to find out with my first viewing of Lionsgate’s Now You See Me 2 on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. I’m ready to be deceived and believe in the impossible. I’ll try not to blink. Abracadabra! Poof! Let the heist begin! Continue reading ‘Now You See Me 2 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

A Taste of Honey (Criterion Collection)
The kitchen sink realistic play comes to the living room screen. “A Taste of Honey”, the 1961 British classic from Tony Richardson, finally makes it’s Blu-ray debut. Thanks to the folks at Criterion, “A Taste of Honey” has been digitally restored and remastered. Completely unapologetic in its’ depiction of life for the poor living in industrial Manchester, “A Taste of Honey” cuts to the bone in a way so few films capture. Where so many films and dramas aim to capture a story with a clear and resolute ending, A Taste of Honey does something different. There is no happy ending, only happy moments, tucked away among the clutter of reality. Continue reading ‘A Taste of Honey (Criterion Collection)’
Gotham: The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray Review)
The first season of Gotham was a disappointment. Despite some commendable aspects in the form of a few unhinged performances and a definite style, the series was too all over the place with the characters and story. The second season, dubbed “Rise of the Villains”, was an improvement as far as providing the series with a sense of direction. There were still issues inherent to the series, but the show was still stronger overall. Now you can check out the review of the second season of the continued hit series and what this Blu-ray set has to offer.
