Inherent Vice (Blu-ray Review)

inherent-vice-blu-ray-cover-26Former flames, big time real estate moguls, something called the Golden Fang, and of course, lots of drugs; it looks like Doc might be getting in over his head.  Following There Will Be Blood and The Master it is nice to see writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson lighten up with Inherent Vice, an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s comedic detective novel of the same name, which places Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role of a private investigator looking into a missing person’s case.  While there certainly is a lot of plotting that develops, the film puts itself in the intriguing position of not really using that as a focus.  True to Anderson’s style, the film is much happier to explore the world and characters deposited into it, making for a bizarre, yet very entertaining feature that is now available on Blu-ray.

Bio-Dome (Blu-ray Review)

Bio-DomeRemember that unstoppable comedic force from the 90s by that went by way of “the weasel”.  That MTV personality that you couldn’t get enough of?  You know, John Sencio!  Okay, I’m kidding.  We’re talking about Pauly Shore.  A guy that I don’t think anyone wants to go back and admit they may have laughed about anything to do with him anymore.  His film, Bio-Dome is coming to Blu-ray and I was surprised (Or maybe not surprised) to find that its the first of his major or lead starring films to hit the format.  Considering there was a time where I did enjoy Pauly Shore, I always found this one to be one of the very bottom feeder of his films.  It didn’t help that when I saw it opening weekend in the theater (Yup, I did) that I had a bad wing man experience to go with it.  Well, hopefully this opens the opportunity to get maybe some of his “better” work out on Blu-ray, namely Son-In-Law really. Cooley High (Blu-ray Review)

Cooley-HighIt’s 1964. JFK has just been assassinated. Martha & the Vandellas, Little Stevie Wonder and the Four Tops rule the airwaves. And two high school students discover themselves – and the taste of freedom – for the first time. Preach (Glynn Truman), a serious-minded writer, and his best friend Cochise (Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs), a basketball hero headed for college, are best friends at Cooley High. Together they cut classes to go to the zoo, crash parties, put the hustle on some hustlers and dream about getting out of their impoverished, rough neighborhood. But when an innocent joy ride makes them the targets of two vengeful hoods, their already uncertain futures seem even further out of reach. Featuring a “well handled mix of comedy and drama with a soundtrack of Motown gold” (Blockbuster Entertainment Guide) and a “universal appeal” (Los Angeles Times), Cooley High is the best American comedy so far this year (Village Voice)! Firewalker (Blu-ray Review)

FirewalkerBack in the 80s, it was more typical that when something had a big box office success, it’s influence would be that is was knocked off by every studio.  This has always rung true, but its gone out in a more clever, less on the nose copy.  When Indiana Jones took the box office by storm, we saw many more traveling adventures through exotic lands and caves searching for artifacts and gold.  Romancing The Stone hit big and opened the doors for even more after that box office treasure.  Cannon Films decided to not only venture down this path once, but twice.  Their first was King Solomon’s Mines featuring the character of Allan Quatermain akin to be “just like Indy!” (Spawning a sequel of its own).  Today, we have the other swing they took, the Chuck Norris and Lou Gossett Jr. team up, Firewalker! His first film(s) were Head of State, and I Think I Love My Wife.  I have not seen those two but was really anxious to see his latest film Top Five. The buzz surrounding Top Five was favorable and the trailers and promotional materials were pretty funny, so it was time to give the film a go on Blu-ray. Please keep reading to see if Top Five should be on your top five Blu-rays to watch.   Continue reading ‘Top Five (Blu-ray Review)’

From A Whisper To A Scream (Blu-ray Review)

From-A-Whisper-To-A-ScreamScream Factory have proven to be the experts when it comes to the works of Vincent Price.  In the last two years, they’ve release two super freaking awesome boxed sets.  Now comes a standalone release which is a bit of a surprise.  I sort of worry about a third box set this coming October as Kino Lorber has been announcing a flurry of Price titles as of late (Leave Scream Factory alone, you!  We want more Price Collections!).  Who knows, if there’s one group full of pleasant surprises its Scream Factory.  From A Whisper To A Scream is one I’ve found even some big Vincent Price fans aren’t too familiar with.  Its his final role in a horror movie.  A small one, but significant enough and fun.  The film was an attempt at trying to bring back the horror anthology film and was tossed aside by moviegoers and critics at the time.  But time is usually kind to a lot of vintage horror that may have been ahead of its time or misunderstood back then.  Would this be one of those? Big Eyes (Blu-ray Review)

Big EyesFrom director Tim Burton, BIG EYES tells the outrageous true story of one of the most epic frauds in history.  BIG EYES was up for two additional Golden Globe® nominations including Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical or Comedy and Best Original Song. The film has garnered numerous accolades including an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Screenplay and BAFTA nominations for Best Leading Actress and Best Production Design.  The back of the case proclaims it as “One of Tim Burton’s Best Films” (Scott Mendelson, Forbes), and if you take a look back at the last 13 years or so, its really an eye opener (Or maybe not so much) to see how true that very statement is.   Continue reading ‘Big Eyes (Blu-ray Review)’

Escape From New York – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review)

Escape-From-New-York-Collectors-EditionCan I gloat for just a brief second to start this off?  Back in 2013 when I reviewed Scream Factory’s release of John Carpenter’s Body Bags, I mentioned that if there were to be an Escape From New York Collector’s Edition, that I’d like the collective that were interviewing John Carpenter to be involved with that one.  It was just a mere fan dream/wish, but on social media and message boards people started questioning “Is Scream Factory doing Escape From New York?  Will they do Escape From New York?  Please do Escape From New York!”  Here we are, a year and a half after that review and I’m now covering Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition of John Carpenter’s Escape From New York.  No, this wasn’t my idea and I’m sure my review had nothing to do with this at all, but its pretty cool that my wish came true.  Anyway, onto one of the most highly anticipated titles of the year! Singles (Blu-ray Review)

singlesBefore receiving Singles on Blu-ray, I had never seen it. As a fan of Cameron Crowe, I have always felt like I’ve been missing out, given how I assumed there was a good film here that I hadn’t had the chance to see. That said, all I really knew was that the film had a great, grunge-heavy soundtrack and was supposedly the inspiration for Friends (according to Crowe). Now having seen the film, it definitely gave me a neat look back at the 90s, along with a sense of completion, when it comes to the work of Crowe. Fortunately for the fans that have been waiting, this Blu-ray not only features the film in HD, but is stocked with a whole bunch of deleted scenes and more.
