Knightriders (Blu-ray Review)

KnightridersEverybody knows George Romero as the father of what we know today as the zombie genre.  But how many people know much of the non-zombie cinematography of the man?  He’s made some other gems such as Martin, The Crazies and Creepshow of note.  Now, how about his non-horror oeuvre even?  Okay, now we’re drawing blanks.  In 1981, George attempted to break away from that mold with a story of King Arthur on motorcycles.  Knightriders kind of came and went without much note and likely is why it is one of the auteur’s “forgotten” films.  Oddly enough, the film did open to positive reviews upon its release in 1981.  The film brought together many familiar faces in front of and behind the camera that many of Romero’s fans have enjoyed over the years in other films.  Shout! Factory has resurrected the film and finally given it a good looking makeover for the best possible presentation for those uninitiated in the ways of motorcycle jousting. Prisoners (Blu-ray Review)

You ever have those moments in life where you first see a film’s theatrical trailer, having never known anything about it beforehand, and instantly “know” that it’s a film you want to see upon its release with no hesitations or second guessing?  Well, that’s exactly how I felt about the film we are all gathered here to talk about today…now on Blu-ray…Prisoners.  I explicitly love movies that explore the morality of characters and push boundaries by asking the question how far would you go to save your family and loved ones?  OR  What is a person capable of?  It’s times like these when scruples are inconceivably tested, sometimes even thrown out the window and immovable obstacles suddenly become manageable.  A real man will do whatever it takes to keep his family safe…even if that means compromising his morals and crossing that fine line of what’s right and wrong in life.  You know you shouldn’t, but you know no one else is going to do it.  You have no choice if you want a shot at saving the one(s) you love.  The naysayers are always going to say nay.  However, I say go get ‘em tiger!  So tell me.  Can you not see that these kind of stories really “move” me?  You get my drift?  Good!  I’m glad.  Because I want to talk some Prisoners! Anchorman – The Legend of Ron Burgundy – Unrated Rich Mahogany Edition – (Blu-ray Review)

AnchormanAnchorman is one of those films I have not visited since its theatrical release way back in the calendar year of 2004.  I cannot believe it has been that long, but I digress.  What looked like a slapstick comical movie back then that I would go for practically fizzled for me when I first saw it.  However, over the years, the film has grown to achieve quite the cult following and respect in mainstream media with so many countless references and quotes.  So large in fact, that we’ll actually be seeing a sequel this Christmas that really no one admittedly saw coming or imagined it could really happen.   Hell, after watching it and taking it in all last night, even I’m intrigued as to where this sequel is going to go since the ending of 2004’s Anchorman seemed pretty cut and dry as to where the characters have gone in their respective lives.  But let’s not jump ahead of ourselves.  The trailers for the sequel look like a rowdy good time, but we have a certain special 2-disc set to talk about here in great detail.  So while I may not be the biggest fan of the film, I’m definitely going to give it my all out best in furnishing an unbiased review below. The Wolverine (Blu-ray Review)

I feel like this film and I have a lot in connection whereas this flick had setback after setback getting made, I had nothing but difficulties trying to see this one theatrically.  Fellow WSB reviewer Aaron Neuwirth can attest to the fact that I did get to catch the first twenty minutes of the feature in the theater.  LOL.  However, that was the last time I saw any of this movie before FINALLY getting the opportunity to check it out for the first time all the way through on the Blu-ray format for this review.  And let me be the first to tell you…it was very much worth the wait!  While the film’s not a perfect one, like Thor: The Dark World and Pacific Rim this year, I had a fun time with the Wolverine’s second romp as a solo act. And thank God too!  I absolutely hated X-Men Origins: Wolverine…no offense Hugh Jackman.  So now, with The Wolverine finally hitting retail shelves everywhere in the U.S., let’s utilize this moment in time to take a closer, more intimate look at this 2D (theatrical version only) and post-converted 3D (the main difference is the Unleashed Extended Edition with the 3D Blu-ray version) superhero action film. Adore (Blu-ray Review)

To be honest with you all, I’m not really sure what I was expecting here.  I really wanted something juicy, gross and full of controversy and taboo.  However, I’m not quite sure I received quite everything on my wish list.  Make no mistake about it, things that happen in this film are completely wrong, gross and twisted in my opinion, but it wasn’t as controversial as I thought it would be.  With a couple flash forwards, Adore plays out like a straight forward narrative that’s very reminiscent of my time spent with the feature Brokeback Mountain (see that review here) years ago.  I have always been a big Naomi Watts fan ever since Muholland Drive (I can’t wait for that to come out on Blu-ray), but other than that I was just along for the ride here with Paramount’s newest Blu-ray release.  So what say you?   Mirror, mirror on the wall.   Who do you “adore” most of all? The Rutles Anthology (Blu-ray Review)

The-Rutles-AnthologyIn 1978, the BBC aired a special from former Monty Python member, Eric Idle.  The special was a full on parody of The Beatles’ history.  Entitled The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash, the film is a very specific and on the money parody of the famous supergroup.  Every big moment is accounted for.  Idle even has written a catalog of parody and alternate versions The Beatles’ classics.  It’s a very involved concept that works pretty well if you’re familiar with The Beatles work.  Hell, if you just watched The Beatles Anthology that aired in the 90s, you’ll probably understand everything that this film is offering up for you.  Its a silly offering that is plenty of fun if you’re the intended audience.  Its kind of surprising that this is making the leap to Blu-ray, but I have no qualms with that.  Let’s see how they did with the disc then, shall we? All The Boys Love Mandy Lane (Blu-ray Review)

All-The-Boys-Love-Mandy-LaneFinally, United States, All The Boys Love Mandy Lane is arriving on Blu-ray.  This film was completed and screened 2006.  It received some good acclaim and high praise from horror fans.  However, what followed was 7 years full of distribution hell.  Nobody knew what was going on and when it would finally come out.  Recently You’re Next was a film that was bought and took a while to come out, but that was only 2 years of waiting.  It’s a unique slasher film from Jonathan Levine who recently struck a big hit with this year’s Warm Bodies.  It’s also an early role for Amber Heard, who exudes her star quality and potential at this young stage.  It’s a fun film delivering on a wave of horror, teen comedy, blood and camp. Just Before Dawn (Blu-ray Review)

Just-Before-DawnIf you’ll remember a few weeks ago, I posted a list of Blu-rays I was hopeful for next year.  Well, had I been writing here at Why So Blu? last year, my hopefuls for 2013 would have included 1981’s Just Before Dawn.   Code Red has answered my call by delivering one right as the year is coming to a close.  Along with another cult title, Just Before Dawn is Code Red’s first foray into the Blu-ray format.  This film has a very cult status as it briefly enjoyed a theatrical release.  Previous home video incantations of the film have come through very poor quality VHS and DVD releases.  Would Code Red be able to finally give us a good looking presentation of this back woods thriller?  Let’s take a dive into this then, shall we? Continue reading ‘Just Before Dawn (Blu-ray Review)’
