Crafting some buzz and nabbing up some awards (Best Screenplay, Best Actor) at the Cannes Film Festival, You Were Never Really Here comes all the way to Blu-ray from Lionsgate. Lynne Ramsay’s film is fashioned as a “Taxi Driver for a new century!” with a lot of praise coming for the performance of lead actor and Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix. Unfortunately, this release is looking pretty hollow in terms of bonus features being included, so you’ll have to take it all on the movie alone. If you’re a big fan of the movie or you’re just gonna go charging in with that Blu-ray fan tradition of blind buying, you can use our Amazon link at the end of the review to pre-order yourself a copy. You Were Never Really Here will make its debut on Blu-ray July 17th. 
Winding down the spring into summer movie season, there was the big hit move, A Quiet Place, which proved to be no joke. But, making the jokes was another solid film, Blockers. While it didn’t do gangbusters, the film proved to be a pretty solid hit financially. Add to that, it was very much well liked by the critics (Which seemed to apparently come as a surprise to most). It was the second solid comedy in 2018 with good box office take and critical response (The other being Game Night). Blockers also appeared to be the first attempt at a comedy with John Cena as a leading man, having shown some chops in Trainwreck and Sisters. I’m not sure where I’ve been since 1997, but I’ve never heard of the name Jack Reacher until I heard news of the film being developed some years ago. We start where it all began, the original summer blockbuster helmed by legendary director Brian De Palma. 
The DC television universe has been pretty much the opposite of its film universe in almost every way. People seemingly are wanting more, more, more. And this year, they’ve added a new member to the family of shows; Black Lightning. Unlike the other new characters that they were quick to immerse into a crossover or at least a guest spot on another show’s episode, they kept Jefferson Pierce’s first season to his own little world and played in a self contained sandbox. Now, its coming to Blu-ray as have his cohorts. Warner Bros is sticking with the script here, and giving the show the usual bells and whistles that the other shows have been given (Maybe a little more here as there as some “intro” kinda things they have a their disposal). You’ll be able to grab it when it hits shelves June 26th. 
As a huge fan of the first Pacific Rim I can honestly say I have been waiting for the second installment for quite some time now. Dubbed Pacific Rim Uprising we finally got another story, which Guillermo del Toro said one day would happen. However, no one really believed so did they? This time though del Toro has passed on the directing torch. We’ll talk more about that down below. For now I want to focus on the mere surprise that this film actually exists and I believe we have China to thank for that. The people there enthusiastically embraced the first outing and I’m sure the studio/producers were banking on this one’s success out there again. Lightning can strike twice and let’s hope it does on home media because while I want more movies made like this I’m not going to lie. The film’s trailers left me very underwhelmed, but I love being proven wrong. I was hoping that would at least be the case here. It’s meh, but still fun at times.
Interestingly enough, Scream Factory is delivering the sequel to Cat People, having released Cat People. Though, their Cat People was the remake, as Criterion distributes the original (Also on FilmStruck). This sequel is a little bit of an underground phenomenon and one people have been kinda hoping would pop up on the Blu-ray format someday. Scream Factory doesn’t always dig this old, but they’ve dipped into the vaults here for the 74 year old horror sequel. They aren’t doing a Collector’s Edition, but they are still filling this release up with some goodies for the fans. You’re going to get a couple good commentaries (One featuring a Simone Simon interview) among other things. Its available for pre-order now. So click the link below get your copy by June 19th!
