Gothic – Collector’s Series (Blu-ray Review)

Last January, the Vestron Video Collector’s Series added the film Lair Of The White Worm to their growing library. It was their first venture in the catalog of the fabled director, Ken Russell. Now, one year later, they are taking on his 1986 film Gothic. Its a significant little tale as it attempts to recount a morbid, erotic and trippy night in which author Mary Shelley was inspired and came to find her eternally legendary story of Frankenstein from. The film starred Natasha Richardson, Julian Sands and Gabriel Byrne. This Collector’s Series entry will contain all new interviews and other bonus features. It will be coming out alongside the release of Class of 1999 at the very end of the month on January 30th. Click the Amazon link below to have yourself a copy of this twist tale of horror when it arrives. Continue reading ‘Gothic – Collector’s Series (Blu-ray Review)’

Class Of 1999 – Collector’s Series (Blu-ray Review)

Eight years following his acclaimed cult film thriller, Class of 1984 (Which I reviewed the Scream Factory Collector’s Edition a few years back), Mark L. Lester decided to jump things into the future with another entry in the gangs overtaking their high schools series. Class of 1999 released in 1990 and in 2018 is becoming the latest in the well regarded Vestron Video Collector’s Series. You’ll note that Lionsgate had a horror 8-pack DVD set from years ago that this was featured in. In that same set, 5 other movies featured in it have been made into Vestron Video Collector’s Series releases. Now, there are only Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go To College and 976-EVIL 2 remaining. Could those be coming soon? One can only hope. Class of 1999 will make the jump on January 30th. Pre-order yourself a copy using the Amazon link at the end of the review. Geostorm (Blu-ray Review)

The ‘ol disaster movies have their respective fans and place in our cinematic calendar year. There are many corner, low budgeted ones that come around in places like the Sci Fi channel much of the time, but almost once every other year, we see one try to grab that success on the big screen. And usually, these things (Especially Roland Emmerich ones) tend to be global hits. Get a solid cast of veteran actors and a star or two, threaten the Earth, give us stakes by showing significant landmarks destroyed, corny one-liners, fake science and WAH-LAH! This year’s contribution was the much delayed and reshot Geostorm with Gerard Butler. The trailer itself looked quite crazy and didn’t warn of Earth destruction, but for audiences domestically not to come to the theater. However, you’ll be able to see it from the comfort of your couch on Blu-ray January 23rd! Continue reading ‘Geostorm (Blu-ray Review)’

The LEGO Ninjago Movie (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Apologies on the tardiness of this review as its been out for a month now (December 12th was the street date for this release), but its brand new to me as I’ve just received it. The second LEGO movie of 2017, following on the heels of the very successful LEGO Batman Movie which itself followed the hugely successful The LEGO Movie. The LEGO Ninjago Movie was the first test of brand loyalty with the LEGO “franchise” and well, it didn’t have Batman and people clearly knew this wasn’t the further adventures of Emmett and Wyldstyle.  Yeah, the movie massively underperformed in comparison to those two films. Ninjago is a more strict to LEGO brand, so they may give a go with a more known entity the next time around. As I mentioned, the film is already available, so if you don’t have it and you want or need it, check out the Amazon link below and help yourself and help the site at the same time when ordering. Jigsaw (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

After seven years away, the Saw franchise returned to scare up some more traps for the Halloween season. The eighth installment wouldn’t admit as much with the title, opting for the John Rambo/Rocky Balboa route of naming it after its title character’s moniker. John Kramer would have been an interesting one to call it.  The film opened to some solid box office returns due to the budget being so low, but wound up being the second lowest grossing of the series both in terms of domestic and worldwide box office. Hopefully this isn’t the of Billy the Puppet’s run. As with Freddy, Jason, Michael, etc…no matter how bad an installment or how long a break, I enjoy seeing these franchise horror icons keep going. You’ll be able to pick up the first 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray of the series with Jigsaw when it springs the trap on January 23rd. Continue reading ‘Jigsaw (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

IT (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

IT 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray ReviewI wish I could be cool and say I love Stephen King’s 1986 novel IT.  The truth is I’d be lying.  Not only did I never read it but nor have I ever seen the 1990 network television miniseries either.  I know.  I suck.  It goes unsaid that I lived a very sheltered childhood up in Cleveland, Ohio.  Thank goodness I left there five years ago and grew into the responsible young adult you all know and love now.  Ha!  So let’s fast forward some 30 years here since the book first came out and now IT receives a modernized (so to speak as still set in the nostalgia of the 80’s) adaption on the big screen.  It’s actually part of something bigger too as this American Rated-R horror film is just the first installment of a planned two parts.  Truth be told you had me at Rated-R.  Let’s take a closer look down below at what IT (also known as IT: Part 1 – The Loser’s Club) is all about.  Join me down below and you’ll float too.

Blade Runner 2049 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Blade Runner 2049 opened in the fall of 2017 to critical raves.  However, the whole way along, many were concerned with the almost three hour runtime coupled with an R rating. The film also was the sequel to one of the biggest cult favorites of all time, but a notable box office bomb as well. And, like father like daughter (hehe), the film had a very low opening weekend leading to a box office disappointment. Had the film not cost 150 million, maybe it doesn’t hurt so much. This was a split juncture, with Warner Bros only being able to rake in the domestic take and Sony handling the overseas.  As such, we are in the US and I’ll be here reviewing the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray of the film from Warner Bros. They wow’d me last year with their presentation of the original, so I’m hoping for more of that here in this picture. You’ll be able to compliment the 5 cuts of the original film on Blu-ray with just this one theatrical version on January 23rd. Continue reading ‘Blade Runner 2049 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Matinee – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review)

Here’s a title that was both fitting of either the Shout! Factory branded line of Shout Select or Scream Factory: Joe Dante’s Matinee. Ultimately it went to that of the Shout Select line. A loving homage to the kitchy creature-features of the atomic age, the delightful comedy Matinee is a smart and sharp period comedy that captures of joy of growing up on cheesy b-movies.  Shout Factory have put their work in here, loading it up with a bunch of new interviews and other bonus features. Unfortunately no John Goodman here, but hell, probably a stretch to get him anyway. Joining Hell Night, this is another highly requested and jam packed release full of brand new features specific to Shout Factory. You can preorder now to have your copy ready to go January 16th. The Breakfast Club – The Criterion Collection (Blu-ray Review)

Kicking off this year of films released by The Criterion Collection we have John Hughes iconic high school film The Breakfast Club. The acclaimed coming-of-age comedy-drama primarily works as a chamber drama that happens to be deconstructing various high school clichés and has been held up high by audiences from all over. Taking this story of high school students stuck in Saturday detention and turning it into a beloved modern classic speaks to what a particular generation responded to. Even if one is not a fan, I believe it’s easy to see why the film has been given its share of praise and has even been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being culturally significant. With this new Blu-ray release, fans can see the film looking and sounding better than ever, along with plenty of new and never-before-seen extra material.

Across The Universe (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Just missing its tenth anniversary, Julie Taymor’s visionary Beatles-infused musical, Across the Universe will land itself on the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format in the second week of January.  The film, nominated for an Academy Award in the category of costume design, was met with mixed reviews upon its delayed release by critics. It wasn’t a box office smash by any means either, but seemingly found some life and fandom in the home video afterlife as well as landing it on more than a few critics end of the year top 10 lists. Whatever your thoughts, there’s no doubt this movie is a terrific candidate for the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format. You can check it out for yourself by putting in a pre-order in the Amazon link at the bottom to have it on its street date, January 9th. Christopher Nolan 4K Collection (4K UHD Review & Unboxing)

Christopher Nolan 4K Collection ReviewComparable to what should seem like the enjoyment of seeing a slew of gifts under the tree on Christmas morning why is the 4K enthusiast community in such an uproar over the Christopher Nolan 4K Collection?  We’ll tackle that question down below, but right now let’s take a moment to pause in thought about this monumental release.  Not only did it take a lot of work to get the three different studios to agree releasing them all in one boxset, but ladies and gentlemen this 7 films in 4K from one of the greatest directors of our time, Christopher Nolan.  Sure we’re missing several titles within it, but beggars can’t be choosers.  Even if they just released The Dark Knight only on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray,  I would have been like a pig rolling around in mud.  However, they didn’t stop just there.  This historic 4K boxset released by Warner Bros. includes The Prestige, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar and Dunkirk.  Let’s take a closer look at this set down below and I promise to try and answer that question I posed in the beginning of this paragraph the best I can. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Judgement Day has come for 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray fans.  One of the most celebrated sequels and blockbuster films of all time, Terminator 2: Judgement Day is making the leap to the newest format. Likely coming in lieu of its 3D re-release in theaters this past August, James Cameron’s time travel/post apocalyptic/cyborg action opus boasted a brand new 4K restoration. This release was originally slated for an early October release, then delayed til the end of that month, followed by another delay that was pretty much “at some point we’ll get to it”. Well, now they have and its available. Release date was December 26th, and you can order the film using the Amazon link below. Could the original Terminator please be coming very soon? Christopher Nolan released his tenth directed feature film in 2017, the escape/evacuation World War II thriller chronicling the events of Dunkirk. Jumanji (4k UHD Blu-ray review)

Jumanji involves two orphaned children (of course they’re orphans) who move into a long forgotten and abandoned house. They find a board game that unleashes a large variety of wild hairy beasts including Robin Williams. It so happens that Alan parrish (Williams) has been living in ht board game for nearly 30 years waiting for someone to release him. Thats about as deep as the film gets as its mainly a loose skeleton to have endless dull unimaginative action sequences that have no real bearing on the development of characters or plot.

American Made (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

American Made 4K ReviewUp until the critically unaccepted Mummy this year Tom Cruise seemed to be on an unstoppable “cruise” control.  One action film after another his Hollywood success has been as magical as his rugged, vampire good looks.  However, like I always tell my fiancée eventually all good things must come to an end.  I was one of the few who managed to see the good in the Mummy, but everyone is now waiting to see what the man’s next move is.  And that’s why we’re here today ladies and gentlemen.  In what seems like an odd choice for Cruise he is now portraying a a former TWA pilot who became a drug and weapon smuggler in Universal’s American Made.  I must admit though the trailers for this movie made it look like a lot of fun with a fully energized Tom Cruise to boot.  Only you can answer that million dollar question of whether it’s any good by reading on to find out if it’s as entertaining as the trailer made it out to be or just a brilliant editing job in disguise.  Y’all remember Suicide Squad right?
