‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Trailer Debuts

captain america 2 whysoblu poster-001With Iron Man 3 sitting as the highest grossing film of the year and Thor: The Dark World just around the corner and building some great buzz, Marvel’s Phase 2 is certainly off an running.  Now we have the first trailer for Captain America:  The Winter Soldier, which looks to be just as exciting and in line with the other fun that Marvel Studios has offered up in recent years.  Based on this trailer and the footage screened at San Diego Comic Con this past summer, the film certainly seems to be keeping in step with what comes next, following the events of The Avengers, while also creating its own identity.  If The First Avenger was a pulpy, throwback superhero film, mixed with some war movie aesthetics, The Winter Soldier has more of an espionage-themed vibe, mixed with some pretty large-scale action.  Regardless, as fellow Why So Blu writers Sean Ferguson, Brandon Peters, and I were big fans of Cap’s first outing, this next adventure can’t come soon enough.  Check out the rest of this post to view the trailer, along with some posters and images from the film.

Clive Barker’s ‘Next Testament’ (Issues 1-3)

nexttestament squareReligion can be just as interesting a topic as it can be a hotly contested one. Why not utilize it in comics? I mean, after all, it certainly worked for 2012’s Punk Rock Jesus. This year, we get another brilliantly crafted dose of finding God, but in a very different path from the more grounded PRJ of last year. Horror mastermind Clive Barker, the man behind films such as Candyman, Lord of Illusions and of course Hellraiser, brings us Next Testament; a story about an atheist who seeks God…and finds Him.

‘Superior Carnage’ Shows Dull Teeth in Issue #1

square carnageBy now, all comic book fans are familiar with the history of the homicidal maniac Cletus Kasady. A little bit of that symbiote alien left Spidey and jumped on the serial killer way back when and look at him now. Congo Conflict Leads to Artist’s Latest Work

Kobro - Why So BluComic books can be a thing of beauty, even in their darkest tales. Unfortunately one issue plaguing them today is lack of originality. That is certainly not to say it’s an issue across the board as there are great, unique titles like Chew and Punk Rock Jesus. Still, store shelves are often lined with watered-down stories and titles that are mere carbon copies of one another. It wasn’t until very recently that I came across one particular story that caught my eye. I discovered it on everybody’s favorite project-launching platform; Kickstarter. While Kickstarter is where dreams can be made, this book itself goes much deeper than someone’s hope to see their work in print.

WonderCon 2013: GAGERMAN & WALLER’S BLOOD BROTHERS – BEST FRIENDS…FOREVER

Dark Horse has announced a new comic miniseries that I could potentially check out.  I wish I had the time to be deeper into comics than I currently am right now, but I do what I can.  With that said, this new miniseries sounds pretty intriguing.  A vampire buddy action comic, with inspiration coming from the likes of Lethal Weapon.  That sounds like the kind of fun I could get behind, were I to have the time.  Regardless, read on to learn more about Blood Brothers, a new comic miniseries that has a presence at WonderCon 2013, even though the full issues will not start hitting until this July.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Reborn in 3rd Volume

Back in the early 90’s I was pretty big into comic book buying. Then I slowly faded from the pop culture media and it soon drifted out of sight, out of mind. It wasn’t until about 5 years ago or so that I decided to see what else was out there in the way of new titles these days. The first book I bought? Guardians of the Galaxy. It looked like a fairly off the wall, entertaining read. That certainly turned out to be the case but I continued on with the sci-fi rag-tag team of heroes. Apparently sometime between now and when I distanced myself from that series, it died out, which seems logical as it was getting rather tedious and boring. This week Marvel is proud to announce the rebirth of the series with issue #1 of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Age of Ultron: Book One

One of the older but less utilized characters in the Marvel universe is that of Ultron.  The metallic menace first appeared in a Marvel comic back in the late 1960’s as the creation of Avengers genius Hank Pym.  Storylines have come a long way in the last 40+ years and this latest bit of pop culture literature features Ultron in his, or should I say “its,” own book.  Don’t expect a hokey game of cat and mouse with the humanity-hating robot chasing Marvel’s favorite super team.  This is one dark tale.

Comixology Releases Exclusive Atomic Robo

If there’s one long-running title in the world of comic books with a very dedicated fan base, it has to be Atomic Robo. I discovered the heroic battle bot a few years ago whose longevity can be traced throughout numerous mini-series. Arriving March 5th on Comixology, the wise-cracking metallic hero is back in his latest adventure in Atomic Robo: Along Came a Tyrantula, as an Emerald City Comicon exclusive.

Justice League of America – Issue #1

Detective Comics, or more commonly known as DC, has been churning out some very solid titles since the launch of their New 52 line in 2011. We’ve recently seen the launch of a new superhero known as Vibe. The timing of this new character’s own title was no mistake as it was brought to us just in time for the anticipated release of the third Justice League series. No it’s not overkill. There is a point to all of this.

IDW Opens the Bottle on Jinnrise

It seems like the last time anybody was talking about genies in the mainstream, Disney was releasing Aladdin on Blu-ray. Well, the age-old Middle Eastern mythos is back, this time on the pages of Jinnrise, a new mini-series from IDW comics.  The title brings forth a concoction of sci-fi with the wish-granting super beings in what intends to be a high octane collision course.

Son of Merlin Attempts to Make Magical Debut

New from Image imprint Top Cow Productions, Inc., a five-part mini-series titled Son of Merlin debuted its first issue on January 9th.  The story has a bit of a Dresden Files experience to it, combining ancient magic with the modern day.  The story ultimately focuses on a genius professor at MIT by the name of Simon Ambrose.  A disciple of science, Ambrose puts little belief in anything else.  It’s not until he encounters an un-openable book and a seemingly crazy but attractive female that his eyes start to see a world he was previously unaware of.

IDW and 2000 AD Take DREDD Back to YEAR ONE!

Though Judge Joseph Dredd’s exploits have changed the post-apocalyptic sprawl of Mega-City One forever, there was a Mega-City One before Dredd ever hopped aboard a Lawmaster. In March 2013’s JUDGE DREDD: YEAR ONE, Eagle Award-winning 2000 AD Editor-in-Chief Matt Smith takes up arms with Dredd veterans Simon Coleby on interiors and Greg Staples on covers to deliver the thrilling exploits of a younger Judge Dredd! One would be hard pressed to call the young Dredd “fresh-faced” or “eager,” but there is certainly a learning curve to policing Mega-City One’s vast and vicious criminal element. This thrilling period of Dredd’s career was previously explored by Smith in Judge Dredd: Year One – City Fathers, the hit e-novella published by 2000 AD earlier this year, but was immediately recognized as an avenue perfectly suited for a different story told through a comic-book miniseries.   Continue reading ‘IDW and 2000 AD Take DREDD Back to YEAR ONE!’
