Another summer at the movies has come to an end and I do enjoy providing some sort of wrap up to this busy time for the cinema. I decided to do things a bit different this year though. I have listed what I consider my top five films of the summer (alphabetically), along with the worst films of the summer, the biggest disappointments, the biggest surprises, and a few indies that deserve more attention. I should note that while I did manage to see a large amount of films this summer, posting at least 2 reviews of new releases a week, there were a few that I missed (avoided) as well. Also, I always encourage interaction in these posts. What were everyone else’s favorites of the summer (possible putting Avengers and Dark Knight Rises aside)? Or surprises and disappointments? It is always fun to dig into these questions. Continue reading ‘Summer 2012’s Hits, Misses, And The Films In Between’

Several years ago, while formally studying the fine art of screenwriting at my local university, I was introduced to Final Draft for the very first time. Outside of that, all I knew about the product was that for many years now, more than I wish to count now, it has been known as the “industry standard” in the business and other than seeing screenshots on the back of the retail boxes in the Apple store, I hadn’t yet touched it. The latest and greatest version of Final Draft was properly licensed and loaded on all the laboratory classroom PCs. However, there was one big problem. It’s great having the software accessible on the lab PCs at school, but what about at home? Don’t worry; my professor had an answer for that. It was called Celtx. And for anyone that doesn’t know, Celtx is a screenwriting utility that’s available via freeware on their Internet website. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, but it does the job…if all your interested in is writing a screenplay. On Sunday, August 19th, at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, CA, I was happy and intrigued to be able to sit in on a screening of the 1930 film Just Imagine. Just Imagine was an American science-fiction musical, which was made to counter the 1927 German science-fiction film Metropolis. It is a film that is rarely seen these days, but is one that has inspired many famed science fiction films since. Along with the screening of the film, this event also featured a pre-show honoring of the film’s production designer, Stephen Gooson, along with a post-show Q&A with Professor Nicholas Cull, who has written books about the effect of science fiction in pop culture. Continue on to learn more about this film and to hear audio of the pre- and post-show discussions that took place. Continue reading ‘‘Just Imagine’ Screening and Q&A’

Directed by Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg, Jaws set the standard for edge-of-your seat suspense quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon and forever changing the movie industry. Over the course of several months, skilled technicians at Universal Studios Digital Services meticulously balanced color, removed dirt and scratches, and repaired any damage to the film elements shot by shot and frame by frame. Following the picture restoration, Universal Studios Sound team up-mixed the iconic Jaws soundtrack to DTS-HD Master 7.1, optimizing the sound on the Blu-ray for the latest home theater technology. The entire restoration process was conducted in conjunction with Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment’s post-production team to ensure that the integrity of Spielberg’s original vision remained intact.
