We have some new information about the upcoming April 12 release of The Incredibles on Blu-ray and it is now available for Pre-order from Amazon.com!  This is probably my favorite Pixar release and it combined several of my favorites together: the superhero world  with a James Bond inspired production design and soundtrack from Michael Giacchino. Kathleen Madigan – Gone Madigan (Blu-ray Review)

For those of you that don’t know, Jay Leno thinks that Kathleen Madigan is one of America’s  best female comedians.  Madigan is also the winner of an American Comedy Award winner for Best Female Comic  and she was also a Last Comic Standing contestant.  Even if you don’t recognize her name, you’ve probably seen her on Comedy Central or something else.  For this Blu-ray, Madigan’s act was filmed in New York City’s Gramercy Theater. Gun (Blu-ray Review)

I’ll be honest…I really had extremely low expectations for this movie since the main star is a rapper who also happened to be the screenwriter for the movie. Curtis Jackson also known as “50 cent,” wrote and produced this movie because “…it was a socially conscious story about how guns go from the manufacturing point to retail and purchased by law-abiding citizens and how they fall into the wrong hands.” Continue reading ‘Gun (Blu-ray Review)’

Secretariat (Blu-ray Review)

This story about a legendary horse and the family that owned him is a perfect fit for the big screen but unfortunately, this is one race that Secretariat lost due to following Seabiscuit who stole a lot of his thunder. Secretariat has a great cast (Diane Lane, John Malkovitch, Scott Glenn, James Cromwell and a director (Randall Wallace), who is no stranger to making movies about historical events and people (he was involved in Braveheart, We Were Soldiers, and Pearl Harbor).

Death Race 2 (Blu-ray Review)

For fans of the first Death Race remake who wondered who Frankenstein was and how Death Race came to be, this movie is for them.  Actually, this movie is also for anyone that enjoys vehicular destruction too.  Death Race 2 despite being sold as a sequel is actually a prequel to the first movie.  While this is a direct to Blu-ray release, Universal made sure to get some well known actors to headline the movie including Sean Bean, Luke Goss, Ving Rhames,  and Danny Trejo. Ready to be a Super Hero? DC Universe Online (Game Review)

I think a lot of people (especially guys) dream of being a superhero and got our fix through comics, movies, or videogames. I grew up on a steady diet of DC and Marvel comics and sat through countless iterations of Batman (the 60s show, guest starring on Scooby Doo, etc.) and the SuperFriends. I know I am dating myself but I bet there’s a lot of you that did the same thing.

Top Shot Season One (DVD Review)

As a general rule, I hate all reality TV shows.  All of the manufactured drama, the display of the worst human behavior, and the formulaic presentation always makes me cringe and I do my best to avoid it.  When I was offered this show to review, I almost reflexively said no until I actually looked into it.

The show is a sharp-shooting competition that uses weapons from across history from modern day automatics to longbows and slingshots. Continue reading ‘Top Shot Season One (DVD Review)’

UNSTOPPABLE Races to Blu-ray February 15th!

Tony Scott’s UNSTOPPABLE arrives this Frbruary 15th and I’m excited to see it since I missed it in the theaters.  If you’d like, you can read Aaron Neuwirth’s review for the movie here.  Tony Scott usually delivers the goods, but I wish he would try something other than his usual hyper-kinetic style of shooting although I heard that it serves this movie well.  No matter what, you can’t go wrong with this cast since it stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, and Rosario Dawson among others. The Universe – Season 5 (Blu-ray Review)

I recently reviewed an episode that was was excerpted from this season five set, The Universe – 7 Wonders of the Solar System in 3D which you can read here, and this is the review for the complete season set.  The Universe does a great job covering many aspects of science and future possibilities and making it accessible for average viewers.  This two disc set contains all eight episodes that total 376 minutes of viewing time.

The Universe – 7 Wonders of the Solar System 2/D 3/D (Blu-ray Review)

If you are a fan of The History Channel’s series “The Universe,” you may have seen this segment during Season 5’s run.  The difference between the episode on this disc and the one on the Season 5 set is that this one is in both 2D and 3D whereas the season set only offers the 2D version. For those of you that aren’t aware of the show, it’s a documentary series that premiered in 2007 on The History Channel that explains astronomical concepts and objects through the use of computer generated graphics and a group of experts whose expertise includes astronomy, cosmology, and astrophysics. Paper Man (Blu-ray Review)

While this movie wasn’t a box office smash, it was well received on the indie circuit and its tale of a man and his imaginary superhero friend is now available on Blu-ray.  The movie came about during a bleak time for the husband and wife team of Kieran and Michele Mulroney who almost had their Justice League movie filmed until it was canceled at the last minute which left them despondent over show business.  They wrote and directed this movie during that period when they weren’t sure if they even wanted to continue in their profession.

LENNONYC (Blu-Ray Review)

In the interest of full disclosure, the Beatles are my favorite band and I’ve enjoyed all of their post-Beatles efforts as well. Now that that’s out of the way, LENNONYC is a glimpse into the life of John Lennon after the Beatles disbanded and he moved to New York City with Yoko Ono. Family Guy – It’s a Trap! (Blu-ray Review)

If you enjoyed the first two Family Guy Star Wars spoofs (Blue Harvest and Something Something Dark Side) like me, then you will probably enjoy the final installment in the saga, It’s a Trap! I’ve always been impressed with how much effort the Family Guy team puts into matching the source movies down to the smallest details such as the music cues and the editing with its dead on accuracy that thrills the inner Star Wars geek in me. Gerard’s Top 10 Blu-rays of 2010

Another year has come and almost gone, leaving in its wake, many Blu-rays littered about.  Some good, some not so good.  In what will be an ongoing tradition, WhySoBlu has asked for my thoughts on the best Blu-rays of the year.  The following article is MY personal top ten favorite Blu-rays of 2010 for your viewing and reading pleasure.  Please keep in mind that I have not seen or reviewed every blu-ray that has come out this year, so if you don’t see a film that you think is great that I may have missed, don’t be upset. Sean’s Top 10 Blu-rays of 2010

Making a Top Ten list of Blu-rays was a lot harder than I thought it would be.  The fact that there’s so many excellent releases that I haven’t seen yet just made it even harder because I know a lot of them would be on my list.  So I decided to make a list of the Top 10 Blu-rays that I’ve seen and most likely reviewed, and another list of Blu-rays that I really want to see and would most likely would have been included in this list if I had seen them. Continue reading ‘Sean’s Top 10 Blu-rays of 2010′

Despicable Me (Blu-ray Review)

This has been a great year for animated movies and Despicable Me continues that tradition with it’s unusual character of Gru who is voiced brilliantly by Steve Carrell and who seems to be a blend of Dr. Evil, Looney Tunes, and the Addams Family.  Aided by a multitude of not so bright yellow minions, Gru wants to be the biggest villain in the world.  His only obstacle is a young upstart named Vector (Jason Segal) who has the same goal.
