I didn’t get a chance to see this in the theaters but you can read my fellow Why So Blu reviewer Aaron Neuwirth’s review here. I’m always up for some human vs. alien fighting though so I’m curious to see how it turns out myself. I know that both this movie and the Battle: Los Angeles movie’s trailers battled it out during the last Comic-Con leaving people in both camps excited about which one they liked the best. This classic movie is Walt Disney’s fifth full-length animated film and was based on based on Felix Salten’s book Bambi – A Life in the Woods. It was originally going to be Disney’s second release but Walt’s desire for realism delayed the movie considerably. The movie was finally released in 1942 and has finally gotten its turn for an exhaustive restoration and a release in high definition.

Thelma and Louise celebrates its 20th Anniversary with this release and it still resonates with a lot of people to this day. The movie became something of an anthem for female empowerment and triggered many discussions and disagreements once released. The concept of two women becoming fugitives due to poor judgement and circumstances was radical at the time.

I believe that there have been three major productions of Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days. The first one was with David Niven which was followed by this mini-series with Pierce Brosnan, and finally the Disney version with Steve Coogan and Jackie Chan. This three part mini-series shared the earlier entries stunt casting of various stars (mainly from television) to play small supporting parts. There have been many comedy teams throughout the years such as Laurel and Hardy or The Three Stooges, but one of the biggest acts was Abbott and Costello. The combination of the straight man schemer (Abbott) and the man perpetually in trouble (Costello) was a winning combination and led to their great success. Before Kenneth Branagh brought his own adaption of Hamlet to the big-screen in 1996, he played the role on stage under the direction Derek Jacobi who himself played Hamlet years earlier to great acclaim. The year was 1990, and Branagh was on the brink to international stardom but not quite there yet. Continue reading ‘Discovering Hamlet (DVD Review)’

For fans of the Holmes and Watson portrayed by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, a nice treat arrives this March 29th when all of their Sherlock Holmes films finally arrive on Blu-ray in one complete collection! While I never thought Bruce’s interpretation of Watson was true to the original stories, I always thought that Basil Rathbone was an excellent Sherlock Holmes. Most parents that have young children and the Disney Channel are aware of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse television show aimed at pre-schoolers. My son has loved the show his whole life so of course I’ve already seen every episode tons of times, so I was happy to to be given a chance to review something that my son could watch with me for a change.

After the first movie made over $150 million at the box office, it shouldn’t surprise anyone to see a direct to video sequel being released. Although the characters from the first movie have returned, several original cast members including Drew Barrymore, Andy Garcia, Jamie Lee Curtis, Piper Perabo, and Manolo Cardona did not.

The genesis of what many people consider Martin Scorsese’s finest achievement happened thanks to Robert De Niro. De Niro had read Jake La Motta’s autobiography while he was filming The Godfather Part II and he was convinced that it would make a compelling movie and began to try to convince director Martin Scorsese to direct it. For those of you that don’t know, Jay Leno thinks that Kathleen Madigan is one of America’s best female comedians. Madigan is also the winner of an American Comedy Award winner for Best Female Comic and she was also a Last Comic Standing contestant. Even if you don’t recognize her name, you’ve probably seen her on Comedy Central or something else. For this Blu-ray, Madigan’s act was filmed in New York City’s Gramercy Theater. I’ll be honest…I really had extremely low expectations for this movie since the main star is a rapper who also happened to be the screenwriter for the movie. Curtis Jackson also known as “50 cent,” wrote and produced this movie because “…it was a socially conscious story about how guns go from the manufacturing point to retail and purchased by law-abiding citizens and how they fall into the wrong hands.” Continue reading ‘Gun (Blu-ray Review)’

This story about a legendary horse and the family that owned him is a perfect fit for the big screen but unfortunately, this is one race that Secretariat lost due to following Seabiscuit who stole a lot of his thunder. Secretariat has a great cast (Diane Lane, John Malkovitch, Scott Glenn, James Cromwell and a director (Randall Wallace), who is no stranger to making movies about historical events and people (he was involved in Braveheart, We Were Soldiers, and Pearl Harbor).

For fans of the first Death Race remake who wondered who Frankenstein was and how Death Race came to be, this movie is for them. Actually, this movie is also for anyone that enjoys vehicular destruction too. Death Race 2 despite being sold as a sequel is actually a prequel to the first movie. While this is a direct to Blu-ray release, Universal made sure to get some well known actors to headline the movie including Sean Bean, Luke Goss, Ving Rhames, and Danny Trejo.
