Homeland is an espionage drama series, with psychological thriller elements that pulls together a lot of ideas surrounding counterterrorism, paranoia, prisoners of war, damaged personas, and what it means to be a hero. I missed Homeland during its initial run on Showtime last fall, so I was happy to be able to catch up with in on Blu-ray, before the start of the second season. Given all the critical acclaim the series received, it came as no surprise to me that Homeland is easily one of the best new dramas currently on TV. The series resembles something of a mix between The Manchurian Candidate, The Conversation, and 24, with a very well plotted out season that is full of twists and turns, not to mention strong lead performances and great thrilling elements throughout. Now Homeland’s first season is available for all to check out on Blu-ray. Continue on to learn more about this release. Continue reading ‘Homeland (Blu-ray Review)’

Boardwalk Empire was the winner of eight 2011 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Martin Scorsese), and the 2011 Golden Globe for Best Drama Series and Best Actor (Steve Buscemi). In season two, Nucky and his lieutenants appear to have solidified their hold on power by rigging an election and getting a crony elected mayor. However, after a bloody KKK attack at Chalky White’s bootleg warehouse, Nucky finds his hold on Atlantic City weakened, first by state agents who arrest him for election fraud, then by members of his own inner circle and even his family, who align against him. Meanwhile, mobsters like Arnold Rothstein, Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky and Al Capone wait in the wings, looking for the chance to grab a bigger piece of Nucky’s pie. Though his fortunes have soared in the wake of Prohibition, Nucky Thompson is paying a steep price for wielding ultimate power in “the world’s playground.” Following the ’20 election, Nucky finds himself the target of an investigation for voter fraud and faces not only jail, but insurrection by some of those he considered his closest allies. Comedy Central and creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker bring you South Park: The Complete Fifteenth Season on Blu-ray. Talk about longevity as a show – in fact, talk about a crude show that turns popular culture on its head. Just when you think that the boys can’t come up with more gags (literally and figuratively) they’ll quickly squash (literally and figuratively) those doubts. We also reviewed The Complete Fourteenth Season HERE, as well. Let’s see how South Park: The Complete Fifteenth Season stacks up on Blu-ray. On a separate note (rant) I wonder when they’re gonna release a full set of the complete series? Anyways, carry on. Continue reading ‘South Park: The Complete Fifteenth Season (Blu-ray Review)’

When it comes to the hit Starz television series Spartacus, Why So Blu is all over it. Many have come around to appreciating the stylish and blood-soaked action/drama series over the years, as they learned that there was much more to it, beyond the sex and violence, which includes the intriguing story and character arcs, but Why So Blu was among those who cherished the series from the beginning. Now we have the latest season’s release on Blu-ray. Spartacus: Vengeance picks up where the first season left off, but had some big shoes to film, due to the incredibly unfortunate passing of original series lead Andy Whitfield. Fortunately, this tragedy did not set the series back too far, as the show still managed to hold on to its familiar tone, which balances its dynamic and over-the-top action sequences and bloodshed with well-handled characterization and story structure. It only helps that the Blu-ray format is perfect to show off the fantastic video and audio presentation transferred onto the disc, along with a strong selection of extras. Spartacus is now back on Blu, so it is time for everyone to get their vengeance. Continue reading ‘Spartacus: Vengeance (Blu-ray Review)’

Those that know me know that I’m a huge fan of the infamous Starz Original Series, Spartacus, but things changed a bit for me this year. Like George Washington, I cannot tell a lie. I severely missed not having Andy Whitfield filling that coveted role. But like all good things, everything comes to an end no matter if we like it or not. We just have to press on. There’s always hope and right now Starz, Liam and the cast and crew of third season, Spartacus: War of the Damned, is trying to provide just that as they take us on an exclusive behind-the-scenes first look at the making of the series’ final season. Make sure to check out the press release and short video below.
