“BLACK SAILS: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON” begins in 1715. The Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean is at its apex. The former British colony of New Providence Island is now lawless territory, controlled by a few dozen of the most notorious pirate captains in history. The most feared among them is Captain Flint (Toby Stephens). As the British Navy returns to these waters, and the threat of extinction looms, another side of Flint emerges. A man driven by deep, complicated, even romantic motives. He will ally himself with the beautiful Eleanor Guthrie (Hannah New), daughter of the local smuggling kingpin who turns the pirates’ loot into profits. Together, they forge a plan to hunt the ultimate prize, and by winning it, stave off reclamation of their home by a resurgent empire. Arrayed against them are a series of opponents: rival captains, jealous of Flint’s power; Eleanor’s father, whose ambitions for the island conflict with his daughter’s; and a young sailor, recently recruited onto Flint’s crew, who will somehow manage to constantly undermine his captain’s agenda. His name is John Silver (Luke Arnold). Continue reading ‘Black Sails Season One: Bonus Feature – Dressed to Kill’

I am not one to write about TV news all that often, but this caught me by surprise. Starz, the network behind Why So Blu favorite, Spartacus, is apparently putting together a TV series based on Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, and Bruce Campbell is set to reprise his role as Ash. As a huge fan of The Evil Dead trilogy, the remake, and Sam Raimi’s involvement in horror in general, this is quite the announcement. Continue on to read all about it.

This past season of the hit animated FX comedy Archer took bold steps, as it ditched a lot of the regular elements of the show in favor of a very long journey in the form of Archer Vice. While the next season seems to be putting things back in order, feel free to re-live Season 5’s wild adventures on Blu-ray/DVD on January 6th. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

I posted about this back in September and now we have a result! The latest season of Arrested Development is coming to DVD and it now has box art designed by a fan. Feelings on this season may have been met with mixed criticism, but it does seem clear that a lot of effort went into creating something quite ambitious, rather than just being a ton of fan favorite jokes lumped into a lazy season of television. Ideally one can revisit this season and maybe admire more about this season, but regardless, continue on to see the official box art and learn more about this upcoming release.

So the end is coming. Mad Men has been a huge success in its many years on the air, but the show is finally coming to a close via a seventh season that has been split into halves. At this point, I can only imagine that people are either with this series or not, regardless of the massive acclaim it has received over the years. I say that, because Mad Men has a unique style and handle on how it proceeds, so I personally continue to be happy with how the series plays out, especially given how much enjoyment I get from seeing the journey of these characters. With that in mind, series creator Matthew Weiner has certainly gotten enough in order to provide a very satisfying half of a season, with some terrific episodes and enough movement of the pieces to bring us to true closure, once the series comes to an end next year. For now, we can enjoy the Blu-ray for part one of the final season.

Based on a string of positive notice from some TV reviewers I trust, MTV’s Awkward is a show I have been keeping up with in passing. It has the basic structure of a high school sitcom, with all the familiar tropes, but the writing has just been a lot smarter and self-aware in a way that made it more enjoyable than a lot of what I see in this sort of genre these days. Especially given that MTV has become a weird zone of bad reality TV and no music whatsoever, this series is one of the network’s few bright spots, even in its current incarnation, which unfortunately lost its original showrunner.

Having just started its fourth season, Key & Peele continues its run as one of the more popular sketch comedy series on Comedy Central. The Peabody Award-winning series features former MadTV stars Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele (who appear to be popping up everywhere these days, including the Fargo miniseries) working together to churn out consistently funny sketches that also happen to be impressively filmed. This is reflected in the Blu-ray release of the third season of the series. Not as much in the way of bonus content this time around, but a lot of laughs can still be found. Continue on to read more about the third season of this hilarious series and its Blu-ray release.

The CW put out a great fun dramatic new series last year, The Originals, but it also put out another new series, Reign. Now while the show is inspired, it really offers very little in terms substance or anything new. It’s essentially just like any of the other teeny soapy shows that they are accused of doing but with a period piece setting to mask it. CW has had a good run with me in regards of being surprised with their programming lately. Instead of being a fun and campy genre piece, Reign just ends up being fluffy teenage camp. This is not my cup of tea, but Warner Brothers continues its excellent home video release reputation and Reign is beautiful. Continue reading ‘Reign Season 1 (DVD Review)’

All 10 episodes from South Park’s 17th season are now available in this exclusive two-disc set. Join the boys as they prepare to battle the crowds on Black Friday to get the best deal on the new gaming systems, watch Cartman infiltrate the NSA and see why the Goth kids are being sent away to a camp for troubled children. For them, it’s all part of growing up in South Park! Wow, I can’t believe it’s been 17 seasons already! In fact, season 18 is now airing. Mind blown. It is certainly fitting to find myself reviewing the Blu-ray set for Spartacus: The Complete Series. Without this series I would have never met Why So Blu? creator Brian White, who has afforded me the opportunity to write for this site. In a general sense, writing about Spartacus has been a huge boon for the site, as it is not only a great series, but one that has been responsible for several great reviews and lots of appreciation and opportunities going every which way. This ‘Complete Series’ collection offers every season of the hit Starz series, along with a few new extra features. If you have been a diehard fan, than this is a collection for you. If you have still yet to dive into this stylish take on the legendary character, then you are in for a treat.

Homeland is an espionage drama series on Showtime that has received a lot of acclaim for the way it pulls together a lot of ideas surrounding counter-terrorism, paranoia, prisoners of war, damaged personas, and what it means to be a hero. Following the highly acclaimed first and second seasons (reviewed HERE and HERE), which were met with many awards to honor the success of the series success, the third season has now arrived on Blu-ray a few weeks before the new season starts, with the tough task of following up what has been started. This season of the series unfortunately has fallen prey to evidence of diminishing returns, despite attempts to change up the status quo and the very strong performances that continue to be prevalent throughout. Continue on to learn more about this third season Blu-ray release.

It’s somewhat unbelievable that Supernatural is now ten years old. Yes, this is the review of the ninth season but season 10 is due to premiere, if it hasn’t already, on the CW via the WB network. Honestly, as a fan of the show, I am happy it’s still running and I am also happy that WB has been giving us some stellar packages on Blu-ray throughout the years. A show like Supernatural deserves to be seen and heard in the highest quality – Blu-ray. Let us see what the 23-episode season nine has to offer those who are on the outside looking in. Shall we begin? Continue reading ‘Supernatural: Season 9 (Blu-ray Review)’
