Community has essentially been a cult favorite TV series that happened to have been in a primetime television slot for the past few years and it looks like it has now finally come to an end, assuming their is no Veronica Mars-style Kickstarter campaign or something similar to bring it back. That said, the show at least ended with a strong season thanks to the return presence of showrunner and creator Dan Harmon, along with the frequent guest presence of John Oliver and Breaking Bad’s Jonathan Banks, among many others. With all that said, the DVD for this fifth and presumably final season arrives August 5th and is packed with commentaries and more! Read on to learn more about this upcoming release.

I guess if I had to consider my attachment to the original Veronica Mars series and how it came into play with the viewing of this film, I would say I was in a fairly decent position to review the film, without caving into the pressures of being a fan and alienating those unfamiliar with the show. Sure, I am a fan of the TV series, which I caught on Netflix, years after it was off the air. That said, I have not revisited the series since. Not that I do not have affection for the show, as I think Veronica Mars was a great series at its best, with fine performances from a large portion of its cast, which had a number of interesting characters and relationships, on top of a format that could balance comedy, drama, and mystery all in one. Having a new movie to experience, my best hope was that it could continue in that tradition, without feeling like it was pandering exclusively to those who loved it all those years ago. I never really thought it could stay away from that completely, but fortunately the film has enough sharp writing, aided by some nice lead performances, to make it worthwhile.

So I am attending WonderCon in Anaheim this weekend and while the big guns are being saved for Saturday, I did manage to do a few things on Friday, which may be of interest. Aside from walking the exhibit floors and interviewing the folks from Son of Batman, which I wont be able to see until Sunday, I did manage to check out the panel for Salem, the upcoming supernatural period drama, which airs its first episode on WGN Sunday, April 20th. The who knocks returns. One of my favorite television series of all time is coming home to Blu-ray in full this June. This may sound confusing to those who are already aware of the elaborate box set placed inside a container shaped like one of the barrels seen so often throughout Breaking Bad, but if I had to guess, this new box set is likely something a bit more compact and easy to fit on a Blu-ray shelf. Regardless, Breaking Bad is a fantastic series and if you haven’t seen it, this would probably be a good time to check it out. There is no official artwork yet, but continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

When you see a press release like this, obviously one things comes to mind, “There was a season 1?” But yes, Comedy Bang! Bang! did have a first season (which I reviewed HERE) and now it has a second season arriving soon on DVD. This June everyone will be able to revel in the looney joy that comes from what host Scott Aukerman and musical, beat-boxing co-star Reggie Watts have to offer, as they bring on a multitude of guests, including Jessica Alba (Sin City), Aziz Ansari (“Parks and Recreation”), David Cross (“Arrested Development”), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), Bill Hader (“Saturday Night Live”), Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect), Pee-wee Herman (“Pee-wee’s Playhouse”), Andy Samberg (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) and many more! Key & Peele is currently one of the more popular sketch comedy series on Comedy Central. It features former MadTV stars Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele working together to churn out consistently funny sketches that also happen to be impressively filmed. This is reflected in the Blu-ray release of the first two seasons of the series. This Blu-ray set is also packed with hilarious extras, including commentaries, outtakes, extended and alternate bits, and more. Continue on to read more about this hilarious series and its solid Blu-ray release.

It did not take a lot to get me to begin watching The Americans, during its initial run on FX last winter. The show revolves around stories of espionage in a period setting, features a strong cast, and has the backing of executive producer Graham Yost, who is also the showrunner for one of the best currently ongoing series on television, Justified. I was very happy to see that The Americans lived up to what I was hoping to see from it. It takes its unique idea and blends an exciting amount of tension, action, and even some humor to work as a series that certainly builds and builds as it goes along. With the second season on the horizon, the Blu-ray is now available for all who missed out to have the chance to catch up.

I have been a huge fan of HBO’s comedy series Eastbound & Down and its ridiculous, foul-mouthed anti-hero character Kenny Powers since the beginning. I know some people are not big on Danny McBride, but I find him hilarious and this show, which he is heavily involved the production of, was a perfect way to harness his comedic energy over the years. The fourth season was an unexpected one, given the finality of its third, but dammit if McBride and co-creator Jody Hill didn’t find a way to make a truly glorious final season for the series. This series was always the story of a former baseball player and all-around horrible guy coming to terms with evolving for the better as a person, but in the craziest ways possible, making it plenty entertaining. On May 13th, everyone will have the chance to see how the sage of Kenny Powers comes to a close. Read on to learn more about this upcoming release.

It was a bit humorous that the party celebrating the upcoming release of the FX series, The Americans, was occurring on the same day as the start of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. For those unfamiliar, The Americans is a series revolving around undercover Russian spies in 1980s Washington D.C. Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys star as a seemingly normal, suburban couple, who are actually lethal KGB agents. The first season revolves around these two working together to continue their mission, while staying hidden as spies in plain sight. It also takes a lot of time to expand on the lives these two have shared, making the audience root for these two to keep this fake, but not necessarily non-emotional, marriage alive. I very much enjoyed the first season and was happy to enjoy the festivities celebrating the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release. This post details the event as well as the conversation I was a part of, with the producers of the series, who were very happy to talk about it.

I am a big fan of Comedy Bang Bang and the comedic sensibilities of its creator and star Scott Aukerman. I have to follow that statement by saying Comedy Bang Bang can be very divisive, as it presents a type of absurdist humor that not everyone can go along with. Yes, the show features a ton of funny people as guests, including Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Seth Rogen, Amy Poehler, and more, but the show captures a far stranger type of humor than many may be used to. It definitely explains why this show is a great fit for IFC, rather than any basic cable channel. Regardless, the entire first season is now available on DVD and it is full of plenty of crazy extras to go along with the bizarre nature that is this twisted talk show.
