The Originals: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray Review)

The Originals Season 1 Blu-ray ReviewWhen the CW first started as a network it had the reputation of having nothing but teen dramas that had very little critical merit, i.e. One Tree Hill, 90210 reboot (Which I watched, I love me some Jenny Garth) and some other random shows. Yet, in the past couple of years, the CW is slowing turning that around by producing some quality shows like Arrow, and the debut season of Gotham for this Fall TV Season (I’m hoping it’s good anyway).  Last year, they debuted a new show which was a spin-off of their big hit, The Vampire Diaries, called The Originals.  Upon first glance for me it certainly wasn’t a show I was interested in personally or even very much aware of (I.E. Not at all).  But I don’t think I am really the demographic they are looking for.  Luckily, I got the chance to review the first season on Blu-ray and I was pleasantly surprised. Brandon’s Blu-ray Wishlist – September 5, 2014

Brandon's Blu-ray Wishlist THUMBAnd after a short hiatus, the Wishlist is back!  Today is a special one, too as its sort of a cross-over with my Naptown Nerd blog.  The film I’m talking about today is also the same one I’ve already written about over there today as well.  Currently, I’m doing a retrospective on the filmography of director David Fincher (Seven, Fight Club, Social Network).  We’ve now landed on the one sole film of his that is not out on Blu-ray in any territory.  To check out my David Fincher Retrospective series on Naptown Nerd CLICK HERE.  Also, if you’re interested, I have many other retrospective series cover film franchises and the like that you can find on the side bar. But when the shows director locks his cast in the theater overnight, the madman is accidentally locked inside as well. An all-new Special Edition Blu-ray! Please keep in mind that this version of Stage Fright was released in 1987. There was another film released earlier this year by the same name, as well. Blood Valley: Seed’s Revenge (DVD Review)

Blood ValleyJust so you readers know, when I do my reviews for things, I will do my research.  When I was sent Blood Valley: Seed’s Revenge, I discovered it was the sequel the 2007 Uwe Boll film Seed.  So, I went and watched the first film in preparation to do this review.  What I wound up witness was an unnecessarily mean spirited and brutal horror film that had no spirit, no life, just beatings and killings that the camera refused to go away from.  Some people claim that Rob Zombie as a director has a hard time showing restraint, well, Uwe Boll surely puts that notion to bed here.  I’m one that has an appreciation for gore effects, too, but with no real heart or purpose to any of this it was just no fun and no good.  Uwe didn’t return to this second one and it looked more of a typical slasher, so I had some small hope it’d be better. MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON Celebrating Its 75th Anniversary With Its Debut On Blu-ray Dec. 2

Mr-Smith-Goes-To-WashingtonI’m incredibly excited to be the one to announce the Blu-ray debut of one of old time Hollywood’s greatest films, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington.  Sony will be putting this out and giving it plenty of love.  It should look absolutely gorgeous in this new 4K transfer.  The disc is also fully loaded with bonus material including commentaries, featurettes and a feature length documentary.  They’ve put it in digibook packaging that includes an essay from film historian Jeremy Arnold.  Jimmy Stewart gives an earnest performance here and is one of my all time favorites from the legendary actor.  Keep scrolling down to get the complete rundown of this release. ‘The Congress’ Features The Wright Ambition (Movie Review)

the congress whysoblu bannerI saw writer/director’s Ari Folman’s 2008 film Waltz with Bashir and was very intrigued by where he would go next.  That film revolved around a character searching for his lost memories as an Israeli soldier and was made using unique animation techniques.  Folman’s new film, The Congress, is similarly about finding one’s self in a sense, but it comes at this topic from a different angle.  Based on a science fiction novel by Stanislaw Lem, The Congress follows a character through an allegorical world that depicts the extreme merging of the entertainment industry and technology in ways so complex that people literally become animated characters.  This is a film that has too many ideas to fully make work, but thanks to a strong lead performance by Robin Wright, let alone the nature of the film, there is a lot to appreciate or dissect about what is seen in The Congress; aspects that I am still thinking about.

Firestorm (Blu-ray Review)

FirestormFirestorm is a film that interested me because of its star, Andy Lau.  I’ve been a fan of the actor ever since I was introduced to the Infernal Affairs trilogy (Or, Hong Kong Departed for those of you who don’t know that series is).  He’s an interesting performer and he’s been around for a long time and has a HUGE filmography.  Seriously though, go look at it.  To have gone back and researched all his films would be near impossible, but I have sought out some and if I see something that catches my eye and I notice he’s in it, it definitely gets my attention.  Today, we’re focus on one of his more recent films, Firestorm.
