Don’t Miss the Riveting Third Season of Homeland, Available on Blu-Ray this September

homeland s3 whysobluI may not have enjoyed the acclaimed Showtime series Homeland as much as I have since its fantastic first season, but this is a series I certainly still enjoy quite a bit and am still compelled to see play out further, especially given how the third season ended.  Speaking of which, the third season of Homeland is coming to Blu-ray on September 9, with a few special extras to go with it.  For those that have only caught up on the second season, some things have obviously changed, but the show still has plenty of big surprises up its sleeve, along with a pretty fantastic finale to look forward too. Scream Factory Is Not Messing Around With NIGHTBREED: DIRECTOR’S CUT Blu-ray!

nightbreed thumbWow.  Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the ground.  We’ve known for about a year that Scream Factory was going to put out the director’s cut of Clive Barker’s cult classic Nightbreed.  But I don’t think in our wildest imaginations we thought THIS would be what’s coming.  There are 2 releases here.  One is the standard director’s cut Blu-ray which is what I think we all assumed this was going to be.  BUT WAIT!  A limited edition (5,000) set with 3 discs INCLUDING the theatrical cut which means WARNER BROS ACTUALLY SUB LICENSED SOMETHING!!!  Also comes with a book and a 3rd disc (exclusive to the set) crammed with bonus material.  Both editions also have their own exclusive artwork.  It comes out just before Halloween hits too.  We were all excited about this, but man, they really went and outdid themselves with this one. Enemy (Blu-ray Review)

enemy whysoblu thumbLast year, mainstream audiences were given the chance to check out Prisoners, a kidnapping drama from director Denis Villeneuve.  Many gave praise to Hugh Jackman taking his Wolverine rage and putting it into an average guy who just wanted to find his daughter.  I liked Jackman, but it was Jake Gyllenhaal’s turn as Det. Loki who really impressed me.  Before making Prisoners, Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal actually teamed up for a much smaller film, Enemy.  Seeing this psychological thriller has now led me to believe that this is an actor/director pairing I want to continue to see.  This is a bizarre film that may be one of my favorite films of this year that I would have the hardest time of recommending to others, as it basically has a simple idea and extrapolates from there, in an effort to make this haunting look at one’s own identity.

Blood Ties (Blu-ray Review)

Blood-Ties THUMBGuilame Canet’s Blood Ties is an American-language remake of the 2008 French film Les liens du sang.  The film went to Cannes and really didn’t make much noise.  It wasn’t a part of the film competition but received screen in the “Out Of Competition” category.  And I can tell you it was just a surprise to me to see this thing screen here in the US this year, but of course in the limited variety.  When I did the press release for the film it interested me enough on two levels; the cast and the setting of the film.  A 70s crime film will always harken back fond memories to stuff from the likes of The French Connection during one of my favorite decades of cinema.  No, i didn’t go into thinking it would be THAT good (that’s expecting it to be a perfect film, haha).  I was just looking for something to, like always, merely entertain me and have me able to find merits on some level for it. Proof The “Lost” HALLOWEEN: H20 Commentary Is Actually Happening This Time For Upcoming Blu-ray Set!

Halloween Complete THUMBDoes anybody own the old Halloween: H20 DVD that came out back in 1998?  You know, the one that was set in 4:3 Letterbox and included the worthless bonus features of ‘Trivia’ and a Creed music video?  On the back of that box it said there was a commentary with Jamie Lee Curtis and Steve Miner.  On the disc however, no such thing existed.  Forever, people wondered what happened to it.  Why was it scrapped?  Is it laying around here somewhere?  Would it pop up on the Blu-ray…nope…they can’t even get the correct framing on that thing.  Apparently that commentary was never recorded.  BUT, thank you Scream Factory (they’re doing the bonus, not Anchor Bay)!  It’s going to happen and be moderated by horor community fan favorite Sean Clark.  This is pretty big too, as Steve Miner doesn’t like to do commentaries.  As proof that this isn’t like last time, Anchor Bay has sent along a photo!  Cannot wait for what will likely be the best Blu-ray release of the year (in my eyes)!  Oh, and I also included a photo of the back of the DVD case to show you guys I’m not off my rocker on that. Step Onto ‘Snowpiercer’ And Hold On Tight (Movie Review)

snowpiercer whysoblu poster 3-001I enjoy science fiction stories quite a bit.  Whether it ranges from plausible ideas regarding the future of our current society or to things a bit more abstract, I love the creativity on display.  This especially goes for sci-fi films, which allow a large number of filmmakers, actors, production designers, etc., to develop worlds, stories, characters, and concepts, in an effort to put something truly audacious into the theater for people to enjoy.  Sometimes that works out quite well, sometimes it is okay, and other times it can be forgettable.  Snowpiercer is the kind of film that sits near the top of the pile.  It combines skilled filmmaking, big ideas, and some fine, warp-minded writing to create a feature fully prepared to be entertaining, strange, darkly humorous, and plenty of other things that all make it rather brilliant.

Alan Partridge (Blu-ray Review)

alan partridge whysoblu thumbI have made it clear in other reviews that I am a big fan of Steve Coogan.  Between his great comedic work in England and America, his performances in Michael Winterbottom features such as 24 Hour Party People and The Trip, and his move to more dramatic work in films like Philomena, I think he is a genuine talent all around.  Alan Partridge or Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa (as it is titled outside the U.S.) is Coogan’s return to the character that gave him plenty of notoriety.  This is a film version, based around the fictional news personality, putting him in the place of a radio DJ/former talk show host and an action plot that unfolds around him.  It is hilarious and while this Blu-ray limits the great extras that should have come with it, this is a very funny movie for people to check out.

Ernest & Celestine (Blu-ray Review)

ernest and celestine whysoblu thumbFor the past several years, the Oscars hand out nominations to a handful of animated films and while Pixar and DreamWorks tend to be shoe-ins for nominations, there are also a few films that tend to sneak in, despite not being big blockbusters.  Ernest & Celestine is just one of those films.  This French feature, based on a series of children’s books, had a limited release in America, but was fitted with an English-language track, with many stars lending their voices.  It was all quite worth it.  Now the film is available on Blu-ray for all to check out.

Aging Pilots’ Memories Fly High During The Filming of ‘Old Bold Pilots’

Old Bold Pilots TNThis past Thursday night I finally got the chance to sit down with George Dawe, a 51-year-old actor and stuntman (you can check out his IMDB page here), residing in Fallbrook, CA and talk about his newest project he’s passionately working on.  Now let me back up for one minute before we dive into further discussing this newest endeavor of his.  I have known George for a number of years now and let me tell you the man has quite an impressive resume of accomplishments in life.  Not only is he an actor and a stuntman like I mentioned prior, but he was also once an attorney and a pilot.  I mention the word pilot to cleverly segue into the reason we are all here today to talk about his newest “pilot,” the documentary television series Old Bold Pilots.  And yes, for anyone who’s counting, I said the word pilot three times in a sentence.  I am aware of that, but I digress.  Let’s talk some Old Bold Pilots. Trans4mers: Continental Drift (Movie Review)

trans4mers poster whysoblu-001How does one approach reviewing a movie like Transformers: Age of Extinction?  It ultimately does not matter too much, as this Michael “Boom Boom” Bay-directed franchise has no real problem turning a profit, even while critics and a certain percentage of audiences chuck nothing but garbage its way.  This is the fourth installment of the series and while all of the human actors from the past three films have been tossed aside in favor of a new cast, Michael Bay has not moved away from what he has done in the previous installments.  There is some directorial evolution, sure, but this is still an overlong exercise in big-budgeted spectacle.  Really though, it comes down to what I expected to see and the film with a poster that features one robot riding on the back of a dinosaur-shaped robot gave me a pretty big clue of what I was in for.

Halloween 35th Anniversary Blu-ray Honored At 40th Annual Saturn Awards

Halloween 35th Anniversary - www.whysoblu.comThe Saturn Awards sure knows how to pick ’em as we both agree the Halloween 35th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray from last year was one of the year’s  best.  It was among my personal #1 of 2013 (I picked all John Carpenter releases and tied them together).  Saturn maybe should have waited a year for the box set, haha.  Or maybe the Halloween franchise can rake in back to back wins.  This 35th Anniversary Edition was most notable because they got Dean Cundey to come back and get the color timing right and approve the image to be near identical to its theatrical release.   And my, it looked absolutely fantastic.  Almost like seeing it for the first time.  There was one scratch most had on the release, and that was the lack of the original mono track. Fear not, it WILL be reinserted on the upcoming box set.  Below is Anchor Bay’s statement on this great feat.  Congrats! Transformers: Age of Extinction – The Bowel Movement (Movie Review)

Transformers Age of ExtinctionLet it be known before we get started here that I wanted nothing to do with this fourth film in the Michael Bay Transformers franchise.  The last two, minus seeing Megan Fox and her clubbed thumbs in the second film, were absolute crud.  How many times can we see the same story repeated over and over again?  Decepticons come down and want to destroy the Earth.  Big effing deal!  Yawn.  I have seen it all before.  And from the looks of the trailers that have aired, going into this one, I expected more of the same with just a different looking cast.  However, the curator of toys in me really couldn’t pass this press screening opportunity up to see if Michael Bay got any better in the storytelling department or not.  One thing for sure, Bay won’t let you down in the hot women department.  With 19-year old Nicola Peltz taking center stage, Transformers: Age of Extinction had at least that much going for it before the lights even dimmed Tuesday evening. Universal Studios Home Entertainment Has Really Bummed Me Out Today

USHE LogoI really don’t understand the big studio distributors sometimes.  I really don’t.  It feels like they really hold back on some things that really doesn’t make sense or they flat our will release something without a care in the world given to it instead of letting an independent distributor actually make a release worth purchasing that will bring about praise and better sales.  Universal Studios Home Entertainment had the chance this week to put a GIANT GIANT cherry on top of this incredible vintage horror fans’ September box set release cake and they instead smashed a giant pie in our faces.  I am so disappointed about their two home video announcements in the last 24 hours that I’ve taken to my Why So Blu soapbox to sit and whine about it.  So, click on or scroll down and let me give you the rundown and then we’ll discuss. Brandon’s Blu-ray Wishlist – June 26, 2014

Brandon's Blu-ray Wishlist THUMBI’m gonna go with comedy again this week to finish out the month of June.  And I’m digging into that of the teen variety, picking one of my favorites of that subgenre from the 90s.  Its a film I kind of have a nostalgia for and I think is a solid film that not many people probably got a chance to see in the 90s.  It also made a whopping $309 at the box office (costing $15 million).

Lake Placid – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray)

Lake-PlacidI’ll be the first to admit, when Scream Factory announced they were doing Lake Placid, I was kinda like “Hmm”.  For one, it was a newer film (weird to call a 15 year old film that), but as we’ve seen they are starting to explore late 90s and early 2000s films.  I remember watching it back when it came out on video and not really caring for it.  I haven’t seen it since.  It’s spawned some straight to SyFy Channel sequels over the years though.  What’s great is that I get to revisit this film with fresh eyes and an older, wiser mind.  I don’t think I fully grasped or appreciated films like this back when I was 17, so I feel I obviously went in realizing it was probably on me last time and I may have not been on the same wavelength as this film on my initial outing.
