Let me begin by extinguishing the haste of all those who said this is another Bourne movie, just set in Iraq. BZZZT. Sorry, thanks for playing. We’ve got some great parting gifts for you. However, I can see how one would deduce such a theory based on the misleading trailer, but we’ll get to the nitty-gritty in a second. Green Zone reunites the former Bourne tag-team of director Paul Greengrass and actor Matt Damon. Continue reading ‘Green Zone is Red Hot’

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee is one of those projects that some bill as ‘an artistic film.’ I have never really been certain of what that phrase means. My take on it is a movie that is low budget, has some bigger names, and flies under everyone’s radar. It can be argued that every film is artistic, but we are a society that does have to have a label for everything so for Pippa, ‘artistic’ it is. This film only saw a limited release in U.S. theaters grossing slightly over $337,000 (the-numbers.com) and recently made its debut on wonderful Blu-ray. After being scolded by movie reviewer Gregg Senko for not checking this one out in the theater, I think this will be a day 1 purchase for me on the Blu-ray format. Lucky for me, May is right around the corner. Lionsgate has announced a May 11th Blu-ray release date for the blood war film, Daybreakers. The stars Ethan Hawke and everyone’s favorite green enemy, Willem Dafoe. The vampire film was touted as being both original and clever, so I am looking forward to checking this one out. Check out the full press release from Lionsgate below. Continue reading ‘Daybreakers Bites Into Blu-ray This May…’

Halleluiah! My prayers have been answered. It seems that we finally have some concrete information confirming Christopher Nolan’s involvement in a third Batman film. I came across this very interesting article (see below) in the LA Times yesterday that I wanted to share with the world…or at least all our readers. The Geoff Boucher article exposes the director’s involvement in rebooting the Superman franchise as well as spilling the beans on all the wild Batman rumors circulating the net over the past year. 1999 was a great year, let me count the ways. Woodstock ’99, Y2K, the end of the world, etc… Okay, so a lot of it was blown way out of proportion. What wasn’t blown out of proportion was the arrival or rebirth (if you will) of a particular band by the name of Powerman 5000. They came in with guitars set on ANNIHILATE and DESTROY. Led by Spider One, these futuristic sci-fi characters landed on the scene with their second album entitled Tonight the Stars Revolt! Roger Ebert recently said that he couldn’t think of an easier year to predict the Academy Award winners. Sure enough, most of the pre-show claims out there turned out to be accurate with Iraq war drama The Hurt Locker taking the most heralded prize of the evening for Best Picture. Other notables include Jeff Bridges as Best Actor for Crazy Heart, Sandra Bullock for Best Actress in The Blind Side, Mo’Nique as Best Supporting Actress in Precious, and lastly my personal favorite, Christoph Waltz, who did a really great job at playing a really rotten s.o.b. in Inglorious Basterds. Two very successful video games in recent years have been LucasArts’ Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham Asylum. Both were hands-on, explore-your-environment, beat-em-up-style titles with awesome graphics (especially Arkham) and both offered long hours of entertaining gameplay. So what happens when you have games this good and this successful? You ride the financial wave of success and release a sequel! Continue reading ‘Game Sequels Abound in 2010!’

Second City recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, and continues to retain its success both on the road with its touring troupe(s) and at home in its stationary troupes in Chicago and Toronto. The half-century old laugh factory prides itself on impromptu comedy as well as rehearsed skits. Television fixture Saturday Night Live has pulled much of its talent over the years from Second City, including the likes of Bill Murray, Tina Fey and the late Chris Farley. The StudioCanal Collection via Lionsgate presents Alexander Mackendrick’s The Ladykillers in a deluxe Blu-ray ray edition with all the trimmings. Describing The Ladykillers is somewhat of a curious task. Up until now, I only ever knew about the film, because of the high profile remake several years ago that bombed severely. Then the original film was slated to make its Blu-ray debut in a nice deluxe restored edition. Of course this happened in Europe first so we had to wait a little bit before Lionsgate was to distribute the film in the U.S. Continue reading ‘The Ladykillers (Blu-ray Review)’

For those of you who don’t know, the Golden Raspberry Awards (aka Razzies) is an annual award ceremony held in Los Angeles to recognize the worst in film. The ceremony was founded in 1981. The award show, which took place this past weekend, looked at the worst films and performances of 2009 and surprisingly, except for one, I agree with them all. So without wasting any more of your time please find below the categories, the nominees and the winners highlighted in bold. Continue reading ‘The 30th Golden Raspberry Award Winners’

You read the title correctly. Brooklyn’s Finest has a total runtime around 2 hours and 15 minutes, give or take. It felt more like ‘give,’ because from its 12:15 start time to when I got out, it made me feel as if I’d been in the theater all day. There is one thing I’ve learned doing these reviews and looking at movies from a more in-depth perspective; anything goes. You can have big names and great acting, but if the story can’t carry the entertainment factor to the audience, it’s dead in the water. I always shut out my mind from real life controversy with actors and filmmakers, and Roman Polanski is no exception. I went with friends to the only theater in all of Ohio showing The Ghost Writer because of my great love of film, and appreciation for not only the talents of Polanski but Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan as well. What I saw was not what I expected. Continue reading ‘Ewan McGregor is The Ghost Writer’

I’ve never taken acid, but if I did, somehow I’d imagine the experience to run similarly to Tim Burton’s vision in his latest release, Alice in Wonderland. The trippy film has its moments in this tale that is actually a sequel to the traditional Alice in Wonderland that we all know. Alice (Mia Wasikowska) is a young woman now, no longer the golden-locks innocent girl sipping tea that most are familiar with. Continue reading ‘Alice in Wonderland Not Quite Magical’

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp continue their long collaboration that dates back to the early 90’s with a new version of Alice in Wonderland. The classic tale gets the big Hollywood treatment with great special effects, dashing duels, evil queens and a very crazy whacked-out Johnny Depp. Who can ask for anything more? But wait! I did not even mention Danny Elfman’s score! Check out my video review now! Continue reading ‘Alice in Wonderland is a Feast for the Eyes’

It’s hard to believe but we are one month away from what will be the biggest Blu-ray release of all-time… The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (Theatrical Editions) on Blu-ray. The Warner Bros./New Line release will hit retail shelves nationwide on April 6th. I suggest pre-ordering now to avoid any shortages at the brick and mortars. Until then I thought it was only fitting to highlight some of the set’s extra features below and share a special sneak peak trailer I found online of the April 6th Blu-ray set. My love/hate relationship with the beautiful Shakira continues. Why do I use love/hate to describe my relationship with Shakira? Well, it’s quite simple really. In my opinion, Shakira is one of the most talented musical artists out there, but whatever agent or person is responsible for picking out her singles really sucks. I really hope I am not talking about you Shaki. If so, then please forgive me. Continue reading ‘Shakira’s a Gypsy!’

Newcomers and avid readers of the Robert Kirkman/Todd McFarlane-created series Haunt can breathe a little easier…a collection is on its way. Image Comics will be releasing Haunt Volume 1 later this month. The book will come only in paperback form and will encompass the first five issues of the supernatural series. The recently released issue 5 concluded the title’s first story arc, so it only makes sense for Image to start assembling collective releases now. Continue reading ‘Get Haunted March 29th!’
