Legion a Sinful Mess

LegionLet the games begin!  No, I’m not referring to the upcoming Winter Olympics.  Rather, those were the words that rang through my mind as we entered 2010.  I looked forward with cinematic excitement as the list of releases brought child-like excitement to my eyes.  Up to the halfway mark of 2009, I was beginning to wonder if I would ever be able to fill out my top-10 list for movies of the year.  Now granted, we’re not even out of January yet, but I still do not have anything in mind to throw on that list for 2010. Mr. Fox is Fantastic on Blu-ray!

Fantastic Mr. FoxWhat’s Fantastic Mr. Fox you might ask?  Well acccording to our friend Bob it is an absolutely fantastic movie.  The movie has graced over 150 top ten lists as it has earned 3 Annie Anward nominations, awarded as a Best Animated Feature winner by over 7 critics associations and nominated for the Best Animated Feature by the Golden Globe, Critic’s Choice and Producer’s Guild of America.  That’s a pretty impressive resume for a movie I have not seen as of yet. Peter Jackson is in Fine Form with “The Lovely Bones”

The Lovely BonesCommercials for The Lovely Bones are promoting the movie as a supernatural murder-mystery where a teenage girl who is killed helps her father solve the crime from the after life.  It’s understandable why Paramount and DreamWorks SKG decided to market the movie, based on the 2002 novel of the same name by Alice Sebold, this way since it summarizes the story in a way that can be understood in 60 seconds or less. HDMI 101: The Truth About HDMI Cables

HDMI 101I know I can’t speak for everyone, but I know for sure that I am not a proponent off spending one-quarter the value of my A/V equipment on expensive cables.  That same philosophy of mine especially applies towards the magical must-have HDMI cable and all its marketed flavors it supposedly comes in.  So what’s the real deal with picking an HDMI cable out?  Give me a few moments of your time and I’ll give you my 2 cents on the matter. Continue reading ‘HDMI 101: The Truth About HDMI Cables’

Avatar the Therapist

Avatar the TherapistJames Cameron’s Avatar continues to blow the doors off of the competition at movie theaters around the globe.  The film presents a world of incredible sights and ingenuity while developing a conflict between man and nature.  The world of Pandora is nothing less than spectacular and love or hate the film, that seems to be one aspect that both sides seem to agree on.  It is also an aspect that seems to be causing some anguish on at least a handful of movie-goers. Stream On: Taking a Look at the Netflix Streaming Video Service

Netflix StreamingIf you watch any television at all, you’ve no doubt seen the Netflix ads in which they promote their streaming video service.  As long as you have one of the company’s “unlimited” DVD or Blu-ray rental memberships, you have access to a library of around 17,000 movies, TV shows and concerts to watch on demand at no additional cost, and with no limits on the amount of streaming programming. AVP: Three World War

AVP: Three World WarFor what seemed to be a once strong then dormant title, it appears that Dark Horse has dusted off the idea vault for the Predator race.  Available for sale now, Aliens vs. Predator: Three World War (issue #1) recently arrived in stores with a dramatic fold-out cover, courtesy of Raymond Swanland.  The book’s artwork is softly detailed with a bout of writing that accurately rejuvinates life into the hallowed character, Machiko Noguchi. Boogie Nights (Blu-ray Review)

Boogie Nights Blu-rayMost of my movie-loving friends have already seen Boogie Nights while I had not.  Considering the film had as much popularity as it did and it’s well over a decade old now, it was high time I sat down for a watch of this flick.  I heard fragments of the content here and there so being the red-blooded male that I am, of course my interest was peaked.  But even a hot, scantly clad (or no clad) woman is not enough in and of itself to make a film good.  How is the acting, the plot, the climax, the believability? Continue reading ‘Boogie Nights (Blu-ray Review)’

Dr. Parnassus a Cinema Oddity

The Imaginarium of Dr. ParnassusAt last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Director Terry Gilliam (Monty Python and the Holy Grail) appeared with actor Verne Troyer to promote the completed production of The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.  The film stars acting legend Christopher Plummer as Dr. Parnassus, Lily Cole as his daughter (Valentina), Verne Troyer as Percy, Andrew Garfield as Anton, Tom Waits as Mr. Nick (aka the devil himself) and the late, great Heath Ledger as Tony. Continue reading ‘Dr. Parnassus a Cinema Oddity’

All About Steve (Blu-ray Review)

All About SteveSandra Bullock seems to be effective in the comedic role, but why?  Is it the direction she’s given?  Is it the script she memorizes?  Sure, one or both of those play a role in her success in these types of films, but how about her God-given comedic timing?  She is truly underestimated from a critic standpoint in regard to this attribute though her films’ successes at the box office validate it.  Now throw in Bradley Cooper, Thomas Haden Church and Ken Jeong and you’ll get to know All About Steve. Continue reading ‘All About Steve (Blu-ray Review)’

Fame (Blu-ray Review)

Fame Blu-ray ReviewI’m not sure what everyone’s problem is with this film.  I have previously been lambasted for openly writing my feelings about how much I liked Fame during its theatrical run and I have seen and heard nothing but pessimistic and repugnant comments from the critical community.  Am I the only one out there who sees the beauty, faith and inspiration that can be drawn from the film?  Should I be concerned or seriously ponder anymore why I thought Fame was one of the better movies of 2009? Continue reading ‘Fame (Blu-ray Review)’

The Book of Eli Not Worth a Theater Read

The Book of EliThere’s a good movie in there somewhere.  It just never surfaced.  Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis are all impressive in front of the camera, but even their acting abilities could not save The Book of Eli.  The film played out in such a lethargic fashion that part of me would rather be a human piñata at a party full of people with violent Tourettes than suffer through this film a second time. Continue reading ‘The Book of Eli Not Worth a Theater Read’

What is The Book of Eli?

The Book of EliThe first time I was exposed to The Book of Eli was at San Diego Comic-Con in 2009.  I sat there rather unimpressed by the footage Warner Brothers screened.  What I was most interested in was how hot Mila Kunis was going to look like in person, whether Gary Oldman would comment on the status of the third Batman movie and an exclamation of “Oh my God!”…I am in the same room as the legendary Denzel Washington. Continue reading ‘What is The Book of Eli?’

In Search of The Lovely Bones

The Lovely BonesEvery once in awhile a movie comes around that truly tests one’s faith.  Spoken like a religious man who understands fate, huh?  I can’t even imagine how I am going to react when my dog dies, whether lone how I would truly respond emotionally, mentally and physically should I ever, God forbid, lose a child.  The heartbreak must be unimaginable.  Thus is the tale of The Lovely Bones. Continue reading ‘In Search of The Lovely Bones’

Tracking Down The Spy Next Door

The Spy Next DoorToday I braved the harsh Cleveland winter to have some Saturday morning fun at the cinema with everyone’s favorite martial artist Jackie Chan.  I mean, c’mon, who doesn’t like Jackie Chan?  His onscreen presence usually warrants a marginally safe draw at the box office and he seemingly always delivers good clean family fun.  The same train of thought holds true for his latest feature film, The Spy Next Door. Continue reading ‘Tracking Down The Spy Next Door’

The Spy Next Door a Welcomed Visitor

The Spy Next DoorJackie Chan just has this unmistakable likeability factor.  He’s kind of like the Chicago Cubs of actors.  I mean, who out there really hates the Cubs?  Even though they haven’t won a Series since Christ was a mess cook, people still adore the team.  It’s the same with Chan, who, even after making an abysmal film like Rush Hour 3, still has his followers.  As we ease our way into the new year, the masterful martial artist has released his latest film, The Spy Next Door. Continue reading ‘The Spy Next Door a Welcomed Visitor’
