I don’t mean to steal anyone’s thunder so please don’t think that of me here. However, what I want to do is call attention to a quote on the cover of this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Warrior. I typically hate these unimaginative one-liners, but this one stands out to me because it’s more than three words and it accurately sums up my opinion of Warrior in a mere tagline. It simply reads “As Powerful and Unforgettable As Rocky” (Edward Douglas, ComingSoon.net). That’s exactly how my first viewing of Warrior back in 2011 went down. I remember it like it was yesterday. I recall living up in cold Cleveland, OH and my local Cinemark holding free screenings of this film. I had no idea what it was and like the ignorant prick I can be towards things I know nothing about I did not take advantage of it. Around this same time I bought my first Apple TV and for some reason or another Warrior was a free rental one cold weekend. I thought to myself what do I have to lose. I hit play and I remember laying there in front of my television never wanting the drama unfolding on the screen to ever end. That’s exactly how I feel about another legendary sports drama film, Rocky, each and every time I watch it. Therefore, this announcement of Warrior on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray October 24th left me absolutely speechless in a good way. Read on to learn more about this 4K catalog release from Lionsgate.

Finally, The Bridge on the River Kwai is making its debut on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray which also comes the year it is celebrating its 60th anniversary in its existence. “Finally?” you ask? Well, last year it had been noted that this one was being done and ready to go and then…nothing. Now we are toward the end of the year, which it was almost exactly a year ago that it was spotted. Also on that list was Lawrence of Arabia, which PLEASE make that one soon. The Bridge on the River Kwai nabbed Best Picture and Alec Guinness an Academy Award, taking home seven total (Out of eight nominations, not too shabby) and pretty much sweeping away the major categories. You can order yourself a copy below from the Amazon link (Which they site, as always, says “thank you” with each click), to have when it arrives on the format October 3rd. Just in time for the first final quarter of the calendar year holidays we are getting, once again, all of the Peanuts TV specials! But this time, Linus, Lucy, Charlie Brown, Woodstock, Peppermint Patty, Snoopy…all of them, they are coming to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray. Yeah, crazy, I know, right! But, Warner Bros feels that you need to have these in the most pristine, tip top presentation you can possibly get. So, the question is…how much of an improvement will it be on these old 2D hand drawn animate film cells. Well, read on and we’ll find this out together. This release will be available (Or may be already available, depending when you’re reading this) on October 10. You can also go ahead and pre-order yourself a copy (Which helps the site, as well) by clicking the Amazon logo below. To say that I was not looking forward to the original April 16th theatrical release date of Kick-Ass would be like saying that I would rather watch a SD DVD of my favorite film over its superior HD counterpart. It’s just not going to happen. My obsession with this film happened way back on the magical date of July 24, 2009. It was on that very day, within Hall H at Comic-Con 2009 in San Diego, that I was introduced to the world of Kick-Ass. I never wore a grin so large in life as compared to when we, the captive audience within Hall H, were treated to not only the film’s Red Band trailer, but also exclusive clips highlighting the mayhem and action of the eccentric cast. Weird thing is, the film had no distribution deal as of yet. It was shown first at Comic-Con to gauge the public’s interest. And if memory serves me correct, the panel even got a standing ovation by the end of its time slot. Not long after, Lionsgate, one of my favorite movie studios sealed the deal to distribute Kick-Ass nationwide. And that was a great day indeed. Sadly, Nicolas Cage was absent from the 2009 Comic-Con panel, but this girl (see below), Chloe Moretz (aka Hit-Girl), won the audience over with not only her youth and innocence, but also her, for lack of a better term, “kick-ass” action sequences. I’m a firm believer that Kick-Ass would not be half the film it is without Hit-Girl.

Many highly touted classic films are celebrating their 40th anniversaries this year. While Star Wars is the poster child for cinema in the year 1977, it was an amazing year for film. Even some that were overlooked that year (Cough, Sorcerer) have been rediscovered and reexamined as classics. Director Steven Spielberg had a contribution to that year, his highly anticipated follow up to his phenomenon Jaws; Close Encounters of the Third Kind. A more straightforward science fiction film compared to Star Wars sweeping space fantasy. Close Encounters would up being another smashing success for Spielberg and it has seen numerous rereleases over the years, including a one-week theatrical run not too long ago. It also continues its journey in cinematic immortality by getting a 4K Ultra-HD Blu-release on September 19th. You can pre-order it below using the Amazon link. I remember back in 2013 wanting nothing to do with this movie and shamefully saying how awful it looked. However, I also remember flying home on a work trip and being bored out of my mind knowing that I had a long flight ahead of me. The conundrum was that I had nothing to watch on the plane. Eureka! I came up with the idea that I should download Warm Bodies on my iPad to keep me company for the next three hours. After all our own Aaron Neuwirth had originally given this one some nice nods in his movie review originally published here. I’m glad I did because not only did Nicholas Hoult go on to become one of my most favorite War Boys, but I actually had a rather splendid experience watching Warm Bodies for the first time. All my apprehension was for absolutely nothing. So with that being said I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to revisiting this Lionsgate catalog title again on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. That ladies and gentlemen is my segue to why we’re all here.

One of the biggest surprises for summer 2003 was the original Pirates of the Caribbean film. There was a lot of goodwill with that movie and its sequels that would form a trilogy were very highly anticipated. Then came that fourth one, whatever you want to call it. I’m still a big fan of the first two films and can watch the third one, though its rather overplotted and confusing. I saw the fourth once. While interested in the fifth one, I didn’t make it to the theater and it wasn’t really priority viewing for me. It didn’t need me though as the film grossed almost 800 million dollars. What surprised me, though is looking back, this series was clearly more of a fan based one that critic. There is a pretty solid discrepancy among the sequels aside from pretty much agreeing the fourth one sucked. Now we come to the fifth one which has a huge distance between audience and critic. You’ll be able to find out for yourself, or if you’re a fan, own it on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray October 3rd. Continue reading ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Believe me when I say this I never wanted write this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray review. In fact I never wanted to even see this flick. Call me a glutton for punishment, but I know the real truth. I’m just flat out cheap and don’t want to pay to view it nor do I want to see anyone else on my team remotely speak any praise about it. You see I loved the first Transformers film. It was both epic and adventurous, but the second feature was a bloated, flaming turd. The third outing improved upon things, but everything gained was lost in my opinion in the last entry, Transformers: Age of Extinction. The title says it all and I wish the franchise would have died there as the stupid title implies. Nevertheless Michael Bay is back here with another mess to rip apart and ridicule, Transformers: The Last Knight. Yes ladies and gentlemen this summer blockbuster is just as ludicrous as the name suggests not to mention owning some of the worst trailers of the year too. Thankfully the people spoke with their wallets and this one did not fair as well as the others did at the box office. However, before we get into everything that’s wrong with Transformers: The Last Knight let’s get all the proverbial housekeeping out of the way.

Tra La Laa! Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is coming to the greatest format in all the land: 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray. Or, depending on when you’re reading this juicy, informative and amazing intro paragraph that is lightly treading water, it could be out already. Yeah, actually its out already. The film was released on September 12th, giving you the chance to vindicate yourself for missing it in theaters. Its a sweet fun little movie that was really good, but unfortunately audiences didn’t take a chance on it. But, hey, that’s okay, now it can be this little Cult kids movie that is based of the very popular book series (Of which I am not familiar at all). The film features the vocal talents of three very different comedic actors; Kevin Hart, Ed Helms and Thomas Middleditch. Tra La Laa! A lot of this is going to be a rehash of my 4K UHD VUDU review of this title formerly published here. So with that disclaimer out of the way let’s begin here! Like George Washington once proclaimed “I cannot tell a lie.” Wonder Woman was my number one most anticipated film of the calendar year. Say what? I’m 100% serious and no I’m not on any drugs. This is 80 plus years in the making here, folks! It’s historic! I would be prone to say Justice League is, but I’m weary about how ridiculous Cyborg looks thus far. I’m joking of course. However, I’ll reserve judgement of that until November (as I hear they are working on him in reshoots anyway). For now let me bask in the ever radiant light of everything Gal Gadot (check her out here) and the Amazonian princess she portrays, Wonder Woman. Call me a sucker, but I just love a strong female protagonist in my action movies, and it doesn’t hurt if they’re hot too. So you’ve all seen my proverbial masturbation over the three DCEU films that have come before, Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, and now it’s time to lasso up Wonder Woman. Wouldn’t that be spectacular to lasso up Wonder Woman, huh (insert dirty evil thought)? Ha ha. Come on! Let’s get started!

Its apparently medieval, sword and sandal adventures month in September for Lionsgate’s 4K Utra-HD slate. Previously we reviewed that Hercules movie and now here comes the other September 19th release, the Jason Momoa led 2011 Conan The Barbarian relaunch. A question was asked on the 4K Ultra-HD Facebook group, “Who was asking for these?” and its a really good question. A lot of Lionsgate’s catalog 4K Ultra-HD releases seem to be that way. Dredd, Cabin in the Woods, that’s stuff people want. The only tie-in or logic I can presume here for Hercules and Conan is that they are coming out the same day as Wonder Woman and maybe fit that Amazonian vibe. Anyway, here is our review for Conan The Barbarian on the 4K Ultra-HD format. Continue reading ‘Conan The Barbarian (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Despite loving Sofia Boutella in Kingsman: The Secret Service I must admit I wasn’t too keen on this newest monster tale reboot when I saw the first theatrical trailer. Yawn! I thought to myself another modern day movie that feels like it has to insert a woman into a leading role normally occupied by a man. I know that’s a sexist way to look at things, but I’m an old, tired man now and sick of all the ultra sensitivity in this world. Ha ha. But seriously, it wasn’t until the second trailer of The Mummy that got me semi-excited for things here. For some reason it just spoke to me more. After all though how could one refute the star power of Hollywood’s ageless vampire, Tom Cruise? That’s a rhetorical question because you can try, but ultimately you’ll fail. The man can do no wrong in modern day action films. By the way I don’t count the Jack Reacher films as action films. However, it was this news here that The Mummy would be the start of Universal’s Dark Universe that really made me take notice of. I’m all about a well planned out, shared universe full of continuity so I’m super stoked to see where things go from here. And truth be told I’m forever thankful that 2014’s Dracula Untold was a one off. Thank the Gods for that!

Way back when, in the ye old times of the year two thousand and fourteen, there were two cinematic adventures of the half man half god Hercules at the box office for the enjoyment of those seeking entertainment. One boasted a behemoth, bonafide megastar. The other, Kellan Lutz. Today we’re here to talk about the one with Kellan Lutz, which unlike the one with Dwayne Johnson, is coming to the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format. So…take that, other Hercules movie. You’ll be able to find The Legend of Hercules from Lionsgate when it comes on September 19th. If you are really looking forward to this one, I suggest the Amazon pre-order link at the bottom of this review as the best method to ensure you have a copy when it releases. Perhaps the greatest single film Blu-ray release of all time was Warner Bros 5-disc set of Blade Runner. It was perfect. It featured a great (For the time) looking transfer, 5 cuts of the film, lots of extras and a 3 hour documentary retrospective that was engaging, informative and honest. I’ve long said a perfect Blu-ray/DVD release is one where you have no questions or wants after it. So, when it comes to this new 4K Ultra-HD debut of Blade Runner being shy of the new extras, its no bother, because we already have everything we need. And this release comes with all of them minus the workprint. The important factor is how the film is going to perform in the video and audio department with this new format. And, I’ll give you the short here; it looks AMAZING. It comes out September 5th, don’t hesitate to pre-order your copy immediately. I’ll be shocked if anyone is disappointed with its presentation. Before we begin I have to admit something. Other than Batman: Under the Red Hood and most recently Wonder Woman I have never seen another animated DC Animated Universe film despite how heralded most of them are. Isn’t that sad? What got me here for this one though is a combination of three things: I love Harley Quinn, I love The Big Bang Theory and Brandon Peters already reviewed the Limited Edition Blu-ray gift set here so I’m trying to help a brother out. I saw the Harley taking advantage of Nightwing scene online last week and that provided a mild chuckle. LOL. I am a bit sick and twisted like that when it comes to my Harley Quinn. So what do I have to lose other than a couple hours of my life? I’m not that special. Now granted I haven’t heard the greatest of things about this one (although our own Bron Anderson loved it here), but unlike the thought of trying seafood I’ll give this one a chance for Harley that is. So without further ado let’s talk some Batman and Harley Quinn, DC’s first animated adventure on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format August 29th. We have a sorta fascination with older, aged action heroes nowadays without really knowing it. People have flocked to Liam Neeson movies and there seems to be some interest still there when Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger do a movie. Its come a long way since an aged Roger Moore was vine swinging in India or hanging off a fire engine in San Francisco. Well, one series (Based on a comic book) decided to embrace all that, with the action comedy Red. Lionsgate is continue to consistently dig back into some of its catalog from this decade and make the 4K jump with them. Red and its sequel, Red 2, are next in line, coming out September 5th. If you’re interested in snagging a copy to have when it hits shelves, click on the Amazon link below. Continue reading ‘Red 2 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

With the release of Alien: Covenant on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray, its predecessor Prometheus easily lent itself to piggy backing with it on release date. A pretty simple upgrade for the 2012 Ridley Scott film. A film at odds with its audience, I find Prometheus a film I’m always eager and happy to revisit for another look. I’d like to thank Brian for ponying this one over to me, as he was originally going to cover this one, but things fell the way they did and he offered it to me. He did cover the original Blu-ray release of the film, so if you like his Alien: Covenant review from last week and would like to go back and check out his full thoughts on Prometheus, you can go back and read them HERE. Prometheus is available now on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray (Street date was August 15th) and you can pre-order from the link below (If its working, if not, be patient, it’ll probably come back soon).
