Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Ultimate Edition (Blu-ray Review)

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Ultimate Edition (Blu-ray Review)It seems like forever since the mighty Aaron Neuwirth wrote of the manic news that broke at San Diego Comic-Con 2013 here, which surprised the six thousand plus fans in attendance with news that the direct follow-up to the very divided Man of Steel entry would not necessarily be a solo outing, but also would include the infamous Caped Crusader, Batman.  Later on reports then quickly poured in that the film would also prominently feature Wonder Woman in a somewhat lead role and serve as a launching pad right into the fabled Justice League movie everyone has been asking for long before The Avengers became so wildly successful.  You remember that George Miller incarnation, don’t you?  So here we are some three years later.  While I was not the biggest fan of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (review here), I wanted to come out of my initial theatrical screening of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with a huge a$$ grin from ear-to-ear on my face…and I did despite the mess the mass critics say it is.  However, before we jump the gun and talk about what really went down, let’s kick this “Ultimate Edition” Blu-ray review off with the quote that gave both the boys and girls in attendance within Hall H at Comic-Con 2013 instant boners. Everybody Wants Some!! (Blu-ray Review)

Everybody Wants Some!! Divergent / Insurgent / Allegiant (Blu-ray Reviews)

The Divergent SeriesBeing a Divergent virgin, when I was recently asked about covering the Blu-ray release of the third film in the series Allegiant (out on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on July 12 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment) my immediate thought was to pass.  How could I review the third installment when I hadn’t seen the other films?  The response was simple – Lionsgate sent me all three.  So below is my rather unconventional, but series comprehensive set of three reviews of Divergent, The Divergent Series: Insurgent and The Divergent Series: Allegiant all taken from the point of view of fresh eyes.  Included are the reviews of the films themselves plus my personal pick for the best featurette on each disc.  (And with some discs containing up to four hours of features it was a daunting task to pick and choose to say the least!)  And again for those looking for specific specs they are detailed and provided at the bottom.  Which movie faction will I choose – read on fans!

The Binding (Blu-ray Review)

BindingAn unsettling spiritual shocker, The Binding shows the darker side of devotion when a religious family’s patriarch begins receiving visions of bloodshed. Written and directed by Gus Krieger, produced by Michael Glassman and Scott Hyman, The Binding presents divine psychological horror through a modern reimagining of the Biblical tale of Abraham, who was commanded by God to bind and kill his infant son. A young minister’s wife (Arrow’s Amy Gumenick) attempts to reconcile her foreboding maternal instincts with her deeply religious husband (Josh Heisler) and his increasingly disturbing intentions. Is he receiving visions from God or unraveling within his own delusions of grandeur? How far will a family’s faith extend when their blind devotion means their violent destruction? Praised for its intelligent design, The Binding became a critical favorite through its celebrated performances and cerebral nuance. Continue reading ‘The Binding (Blu-ray Review)’

The Mermaid (Blu-ray Review)

the mermaid coverCurrently holding the record of being China’s biggest movie of all time, Stephen Chow has directed The Mermaid; a slapstick, romantic comedy with an eye on the fantastical and a heart out for an eco-friendly message. That may sound like a lot, but aside from the lack of kung fu, this film has all the energy found in Chow’s previous hits such as Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. Now audiences will have even more of a chance to check out what has made this film such a popular hit with its new Blu-ray release.

Search Party (Blu-ray Review)

search-party-blu-ray-coverThe co-writer of Old School and The Hangover Part II has made his directorial debut with a road comedy that packs in plenty of comedic talent and attempts to make the most out of an ungainly amount of ridiculous situations. Search Party has a lot of good talent involved, but it unsurprisingly made little impact during its initial (and very limited) theatrical and VOD run. Now the film has arrived on Blu-ray where I had the chance to view the film myself. The results are not pretty.

Eddie The Eagle (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Eddie the Eagle 4KI can assure you that before I opened my door to the UPS man delivering a package from Fox, I knew absolutely nothing about Eddie the Eagle other than Aaaron Neuwirth reviewed the regular Blu-ray version of it over here.  I asked several friends via text if they ever saw this film or knew anything about it.  While everyone basically said no, one did say yes and said he remembered actually watching Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards in the Olympic Games back in the late 80’s.  He’s nostalgic like that.  So that made me want to do my own research, of course via a Google search box. The Boy Who Cried Werewolf (Blu-ray Review)

Boy-Who-Cried-WerewolfThis July, Scream Factory presents a long-lost cult favorite on Blu-ray for the first time. The Boy Who Cried Werewolf debuts on Blu-ray.  This was the third and final pairing of actor Kerwin Mathews and cult filmmaker Nathan Juran (Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, The Brain From Planet Arous). The two had also worked together on the classic The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad and Jack The Giant Killer.  The film makes its home video debut with a beautiful new High-Definition Transfer!  In this thriller, a boy visits his father in a secluded cabin; the father is attacked by a werewolf and then becomes one himself. The boy constantly tries to tell others, but nobody will believe him.  The film was originally released theatrical as half of a double bill with another film Scream Factory put out this year on Blu-ray, “Sssssss”. Independence Day: 20th Anniversary Edition (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Independence Day 4K Blu-rayI’m spending the time before the upcoming holiday weekend to write about the aptly titled Independence Day, now some 20 years old and counting.  Fox provided us with a regular Blu-ray version of this 20th Anniversary releases, which Aaron Neuwirth reviewed enthusiastically over here, but today I’m coming at you with the best presentation this film has ever seen on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format.  However, I digress for the moment as I want to spend the next few paragraphs talking about what the 1996 science-fiction action flick meant to me.  It is my belief that Independence Day accomplished three major things things, if not more.  First, it ushered in the era of what all now know of as the obligatory, annual large-scale disaster films that plague the summer box office.  Second, it became a star vehicle for Will Smith and opened doors to him in Hollywood I’m sure he never imagined despite the bright, rising star he already was.  And finally, Independence Day set the bar for all sci-fi action movies to follow with its then groundbreaking effects.
