Bones And All (Blu-ray Review)

Following up the widely praised Suspiria, Luca Guadagnino has reteamed with his Call Me By Your Name star for another unique cinematic love story in Bones And All. The film didn’t quite set the box office on fire and wasn’t the awards darling it may have hoped for. With those goals, this was indeed a big swing, but its admirable that it was made in the first place. Unfortunately, I’m sure that non-success went into the decision making to only put it on standard Blu-ray for its home video debut. Though, after seeing something even more successful like Barbarian go streaming/digital only, I’m thankful for this dated format edition to exist. The disc arrives on January 31st, has an Atmos track and 5 VERY brief featurettes. You can order yourself a copy of it using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review at the bottom of the page.

The Dentist Collection – Collector’s Series (Blu-ray Review)

In the Blu-ray era, when it comes to the horror genre, its nice to see that every movie has some sort of cult audience and that the format is more than willing to deep dive into these flicks. The Dentist was a series of films with Corben Bersen that I personally remember as video store staples. Probably somewhere under the B-grade even, but fun, fond memories nonetheless. Vestron Video is scratching that itch, to continue to go through the backlog of Lionsgate owned horror titles yet to hit the format and proving the wait for them is worth it. This 2 disc collection that includes commentaries and new interviews will be out on January 24th. Be sure and pre-order a copy from the paid Amazon Associates link below.

The Jackie Chan Collection: Volume 1 (1976-1982) Blu-ray Review)

Much of the deep catalog for Jackie Chan has been lacking in the United States. Overseas in the UK, 88 Films and Eureka Entertainment have been delivering quality releases of it. Now, Shout! Loaded with bonus features and each film to their own disc, their set includes The Killer Meteors, Shaolin Wooden Men, To Kill With Intrigue, Snake & Crane Arts Of Shaolin, Dragon Fist, Battle Creek Brawl and Dragon Lord. Dawn Of The Dead (2004) – Collector’s Edition (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Back in 2017, Scream Factory unleashed a pretty stacked 2-disc edition of Zack Snyder and James Gunn’s retread through the mall zombie epic Dawn of the Dead. That edition had 2 cuts of the film and discs full and full of new material and archival features. Now, its come time for them to give it the 4K Ultra-HD upgrade. This time around, only the video transfer is going to be new. They’ve polished up the Unrated cut of the film with a new 4K scan from the original negative (2K for the insert footage). Dawn of the Dead (2004) will release at the very end of January on the 31st. Be sure to get your pre-order in using the paid Amazon Associates link that will be there when you scroll to the bottom of this review.

The Menu (Blu-ray Review)

As per every year, the one genre you can count on for both original content and box office success is horror. 2022 offered a variety of delights to appetize, including The Menu back in November to play concurrent to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Now, the Anya Taylor-Joy/Ralph Fiennes thrilling dark comedy will be coming to standard Blu-ray for you to own on January 17th. This entree will come with a dessert of a few featurettes glazed with some deleted scenes. A digital copy is also included as the cherry on top. You can pre-order the Blu-ray for The Menu by using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review at the bottom of the page.

Black Adam (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

This past October, Dwayne Johnson’s long courted passion project over at DC of bringing to life a film about the Shazam villain Black Adam, finally unleashed upon audiences. What promised to change the hierarchy of the DC Universe did so in many ways I think it did not plan on. Nonetheless, Johnson’s project DID finally get made. And now its coming to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray on January 3rd, making it the first superhero comic book movie on home video in the year of 2023. This comes loaded with extras and a Dolby Atmos track. Pre-order yourself a copy by using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review at the bottom of the page.

My Best Friend’s Wedding (25th Anniversary 4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

25 years ago, I had a great year with films. All mainstream, yet somehow so wonderful, different, and fun, I was lucky enough to see quite a few that left an indelible mark on my love of movies. One such movie, My Best Friend’s Wedding came to me as an eye-rolling consequence of having an older sister. At the time, I was denying my own coming out, at age 12, and trying to be decidedly macho in my movie choices. The reasoning behind that is all but lost to me now, as I revisit My Best Friend’s Wedding for what seems like the umpteenth time, with this new 4K UHD Blu-ray edition, which was released very quietly, and hard to acquire, in mid-December.  Read more on this classic comedy and if you didn’t know this was available in 4K, it is and can be yours by clicking the paid link at the end of this review!

Bros (Blu-ray Review)

Bros was labeled as the first LGBTQ+ romantic comedy of all time.  Major studio backed, maybe, but the label itself was a falsity.  In the 90’s, we had a few movies come and go, some surprising, some not and some were from major studios, even if they had straight actors in the roles.  What Bros does have working for itself is a largely LGBTQ+ cast, which is rare.  Even in the roles that are “straight” there are queer actors in the roles.  Save for a few cameos, we are treated to a treasure trove of comic talent, and that for me is what matters most.  Read more on Bros below and click the paid link below to score a copy.  We may not have gone out in droves to see this film, but maybe we can stay in and enjoy it!

Halloween Ends (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

David Gordon Green’s alternate timeline of what comes after John Carpenter’s 1977 Halloween found its conclusion this past fall. The trilogy as a whole found itself a smashing success since 2018, raking in almost half a billion on merely 60 million for all three movies. The final piece, Halloween Ends will be arriving for 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray purchase on December 27th. So you can spend your holiday money on a movie for a different holiday. It features plenty of featurettes, deleted scenes and a commentary with a lot of people involved. You can pre-order it if you want, and hopefully it comes on the release date. Clerks III (Blu-ray Review)

Kevin Smith’s Clerks series has appeared to be his most personal of the bunch. This third one coming now 16 years after the previous film (12 years between the first two). While Smith opts for a smaller theatrical run via his roadshow and the Fathom Event route, he’s still keen on Blu-ray releases. Clerks III arrived on December 6th. It features a pair of feature length documentaries on it, a commentary and some deleted scenes. As per any Askewniverse property, its loaded, in other words. The Banshees Of Inisherin (Blu-ray Review)

Martin McDonagh’s latest film, The Banshees of Inisherin is probably going to be one of the more pushed and lauded film come awards season this year. There’s plenty of acting and writing accolades to be had from it. Unfortunately it didn’t quite get people out of their homes to go see it at the theater. But now, you can own the film on Blu-ray. Released on December 20th, the film has also been available on HBO Max and digital rental/purchase for a short time already. This one comes with a featurette on making the movie and some deleted scenes to add to the ownership experience. A shame there wasn’t a 4K release, perhaps maybe a Criterion down the road, but can grab yourself a copy if you want by clicking on the paid Amazon Associates link at the bottom of the review.

Ticket To Paradise (Blu-ray Review)

Does star power still carry weight these days? The movie theater world is dominated by fast-paced, epic-length superhero fare.  Comedies are almost non-existent, and even worse, romantic comedies, once a source of great box office strength, are like the cinematic dinosaur.  What’s sad, is that these movies were often enduring, sweet, and easy to revisit.  The announcement of Ticket To Paradise led me to an instant smile.  Julia Roberts, George Clooney, and an exotic locale? I’m in.  With all that said, get deeper into my thoughts on Ticket To Paradise below and if you’re so inclined, there’s a paid Amazon link at the end for you to get yourself a copy!

Cooley High – The Criterion Collection (Blu-ray Review)

The 70s remains a robust period for cinema. Black cinema during this time has received various forms of appreciation over the years, particularly regarding the explosion of Blaxploitation films. Cooley High is in a different class. Call it “Black American graffiti” if you’d like, and it’s not inaccurate. Whatever the case, this is a funny and endearing coming-of-age story revolving around Black teens in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing project. Seeing The Criterion Collection give Cooley High a proper Blu-ray release, complete with a fantastic new digital transfer, is a great thing to see. Sure, this is another step in delving into the diverse range of American cinema arriving during influential times in film history, but the film also stands out as a cinematic depiction of joy from the perspective of Black teens in an authentic environment. Having the film scored by Motown hits is merely a bonus.

The Woman King (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

If there’s one thing that Shout! Factory can excel at, its getting 80s classics onto the latest home video formats in the more celebrated fashions. During Hanukkah and just before Christmas hits this year, they’ll be putting out Jon Badham’s 1983 classic, WarGames starring Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy. Just ahead of its 40th anniversary, this 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray debut features a new 4K scan from the original camera negative. All extras from the Blu-ray edition are intact. Smile (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

One of 2022’s biggest box office success stories has come in the form of the original horror film, Smile. Paramount’s little horror flick that came from a short film has generated over $200 million and was able to cross $100 million stateside. As of writing, the film is still in the Top 13 grossing films of the Thanksgiving weekend. Quite an impressive little run for this movie, considering it has been on Paramount+ for a few weeks. The well reviewed film arrives on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray on December 13th and will come with a host of extras including a commentary, the original short film, deleted scenes and more. Order yourself a copy of one of the year’s most successful horror films by clicking on the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review at the bottom of the page.

Silent Night, Deadly Night Collection – Collector’s Series (Blu-ray Review)

One of my long standing wishlist titles for Blu-ray have been for the remaining sequels to Silent Night, Deadly Night to find their day in the sun. And at last, on December 13th, they finally will see that dawn. Vestron Video Collector’s Series from Lionsgate has updated their DVD 3 film set and is bringing it to a pretty loaded Blu-ray set. Each film is getting a commentary and plenty of interviews in tow. These films may be of the acquired taste variety, but I tend to love how weird, wacky and somehow disturbing this series gets. There’s even peak hypocrisy with known vehement hater of the first film, Mickey Rooney, leading the cast of the fifth film. This set comes at a pretty great deal for 3 films with new bonus features and you can order it using the paid Amazon Associates link at the bottom of this review.
