I once spoke with an acquaintance who referred to vampires as cupcakes. It’s not because of their sweetened depictions in a great deal of pop culture productions. Rather, it’s because they are the current flavor, if you will, just as the hand-held dessert is the current pastry trend. Let’s face it, vampires will always be with us in all their lore and gore glory. But just as vampires were once only associated with Dracula as cupcakes were only chocolate or vanilla frosted, the two have grown exponentially in their variety and complexity in recent memory. Yet there comes a point when something needs to get a facelift in order to continue to work in an already overcrowded genre. So what does DC’s Looker have to offer?

We’re well into August now which can only mean one thing…it’s my dad’s birthday soon. Yes, well that and the fact that Valiant Comics is relaunching the final title of its first wave with issue #1 of Archer & Armstrong. The series was a big hit among readers back in the early 90’s. I will say this, it didn’t attract much of my attention then, but it sure as heck does now.

From Emerald City Comicon: Paul Tobin announced he’s writing a blend of horror and crime that will appeal to those who like books such as Locke & Key, Preacher, or B.P.R.D.! Colder comes from the creative team behind the successful Falling Skies comic, writer Paul Tobin (Marvel Adventures: Fantastic Four, Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man) and artist Juan Ferreyra (Rex Mundi). “Horror and mystery are two things that have always fascinated me, and I wanted to bring those elements together in a story woven around what I consider one of my strongest tools as a writer, which is character. One facet of horror that I really wanted to explore is how the tension of horror is at its peak when it’s still a mystery. But . . . what if we had a chance to peek behind the curtain and into the darkened closet, and found that the truth is even worse?” Paul Tobin questioned. Self described as “Medical Grade Revenge” combining elements of 100 Bullets, Dexter and ER, this dark title caught my attention very quickly. We’ve all received those foreboding emails littered with urban myths about being cautious as to whom you meet in a bar. You never know if you might wake up in a bath tub the next morning with a kidney missing as you’ve fallen victim to some mysterious black market organ trade. Harvest brings that modern legend to the pages of Image in greater detail.

I don’t know what it is, but of the half dozen or so comic book titles that really, truly impress me this year, a third of those deal with the dearly departed. First it was IDW’s Grim Leaper. Now it’s National Comics’ (via DC) Eternity; the story of a 27-year old medical examiner who has one extremely unique talent.
