Most parents that have young children and the Disney Channel are aware of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse television show aimed at pre-schoolers. My son has loved the show his whole life so of course I’ve already seen every episode tons of times, so I was happy to to be given a chance to review something that my son could watch with me for a change.

When I watch a movie, my expectations are very important. Some of my current favorite movies disappointed me initially and I answered no when asked if I liked them. It usually takes me a while to watch the movie again, accept it for what it is (instead of hoping the filmmakers had done better), and grow to love it.

As a general rule, I hate all reality TV shows. All of the manufactured drama, the display of the worst human behavior, and the formulaic presentation always makes me cringe and I do my best to avoid it. When I was offered this show to review, I almost reflexively said no until I actually looked into it.

Being a long time fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, I was excited to see the new horror movie with Charisma Carpenter (who had played Cordelia Chase in those shows). It seemed to take forever for the movie to arrive but when it did, I was sad to see that the DVD case was broken and the movie was sliding around in its case. I worried that the disc might have been scratched or broken. The disc turned out to be ok but I should have taken the broken case as a premonition. Continue reading ‘Psychosis (DVD Review)’

The only thing better than Billy the Exterminator Season One is Billy the Exterminator Season Two! Right? To be completely honest, Season Two doesn’t have a lot of new things in it, but that is okay. More Billy the Exterminator is a very good thing. Season Two was just as entertaining as Season One.

The Secret Life of the American Teenager (aka The Secret Life) should keep its secrets to itself! I admit that my taste in movies and tv shows rivals that of any fourteen year old girl. That’s slightly embarrassing given the fact that I just turned 33. That being said, it was painful to sit through 602 minutes of The Secret Life. The estrogen network, aka Lifetime, brings you the fourth season of Army Wives on a four disc DVD set. The show is based on the novel Under the Sabers: The Unwritten Code of Army Wives by Tanya Biank and it offers a look at a life in the military for the soldiers and how it affects their family. In the spirit of full disclosure, Recipe for a Perfect Christmas is 100% chick flick, brought to you by Lifetime. As I am, in fact a “chick” I may be genetically predisposed to liking such films. Those of you with overwhelming testosterone levels should know that there are no explosions, nudity, or gunfights.

A&E brings you Billy the Exterminator, my new favorite reality show. As the title suggests, Billy Bretherton is an exterminator. He runs the family business, Vex Con – a very busy company located in Lousiana. Billy and his team remove everything from cockroaches to alligators and it does not appear as though he ever turns down a job. Billy and his family are as white trash as they come, but somehow it’s part of their charm. Continue reading ‘Billy the Exterminator Season One (DVD Review)’

In the interest of full disclosure, the Beatles are my favorite band and I’ve enjoyed all of their post-Beatles efforts as well. Now that that’s out of the way, LENNONYC is a glimpse into the life of John Lennon after the Beatles disbanded and he moved to New York City with Yoko Ono. Lennon loved New York City and proclaimed it to be his new home but his vocal and effective anti-war stance quickly brought the full force of the U.S. Government down upon him. This is a look into the life and times of John Lennon who while trying to discover what kind of life he wanted also had to fight from being deported from America for being who he was. Baz Luhrmann got his big break by directing Strictly Ballroom which of course led to William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and the final installment of his Red Curtain Trilogy Moulin Rouge, which was then followed by Australia. Like most of his movies, Strictly Ballroom is highly theatrical and has a heightened drama to it that can either help a film (Moulin Rouge), or can hurt it (Romeo and Juliet). Not many people are aware of the role that Walt Disney played in furthering relations between the United States and South America. It’s a little known fact that in 1941, the State Department’s Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs asked Disney if he would consider traveling to South America on a goodwill tour to support its “Good Neighbor” policy. In exchange, the US Government would finance his next movie (which would later become Saludos Amigos). Continue reading ‘Walt & El Grupo (DVD Review)’

Once upon a time, a magical kingdom lost its King and the magic that had protected it for decades began to disappear. Try as they might, the caretakers of the kingdom couldn’t restore the missing magic no matter what they did. With the King gone, no one knew how to lead the kingdom and some felt things should stay the same while others saw an opportunity to change everything. Eventually, that conflict sent the kingdom in an upheaval but like all good fairy-tales, this one eventually had a happy ending. Continue reading ‘Waking Sleeping Beauty (DVD Review)’

Their music is known throughout the world, been at the top of the Billboard charts, heard in Disney theme parks, and played an integral part in the success of many beloved movies as well. Robert and Richard Sherman, professionally known as The Sherman Brothers, have arguably contributed more to the success of the Walt Disney empire than anyone else through their wonderful songs. I spent this whole movie with one thought burning through my brain – who is the actress playing Alice Creed and where do I know her from. In this movie, I watched her fight, listened to her talk and scream, saw her topless and still couldn’t figure it out. As I begin writing this review, the light bulb comes on in my head and I realize that she is the woman from Prince of Persia. The actress, Gemma Arterton, may have had a long career and Prince of Persia may be the least interesting thing people know her from – but it’s where I know her from and I am thoroughly proud of myself for figuring it out without the assistance of a Google search!

The third installment of The Lost Boys trilogy, (The Lost Boys, The Lost Boys – The Tribe, and now this one The Lost Boys – The Thirst), is out now and is better than the poorly received yet profitable previous movie. This time around, Corey Feldman has an Executive Producer title as well because he wanted to ensure that this one was better than the second one. When the Jonah Hex movie was announced I was really looking forward to it. I love westerns, it had a good cast, and I enjoyed the character in earlier DC Comics shows such as Batman – The Animated Series, Justice League – Unlimited and Batman – The Brave and the Bold. Hex was never popular enough to have his own show, but he did have several long running comic series which were popular. Continue reading ‘Jonah Hex (DVD Review)’

The second season of the fantasy show is based on Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth series which ended the shows run. The show was produced by Renaissance Pictures the production company owned by Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert, who had previously produced other fantasy shows such as Hercules – The Legendary Journeys, Xena – The Warrior Princess, and one of my guilty favorites – Jack of all Trades. I liked all of those shows but they were also capable of making some terrible ones like Cleopatra 2525, so I wasn’t sure how this show would turn out.
