This improbable pairing of Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise as brothers in a movie about autism seemed like an unlikely contender for success, but it not only succeeded both commercially and critically, but it also won four Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and a well-deserved Best Actor award for Dustin Hoffman. When I first heard of this movie I wanted to see it just for the cast alone. Glorious 39 has Bill Nighy, Julie Christie, Christopher Lee, Jeremy Northam, David Tennant, and that’s a pretty good combination. Plus, it was marketed as a thriller that takes place right before World War II, so between the two I wanted to review this. While I did get to see this excellent cast do their parts as well as they could, I was let down by the rest of the movie. Continue reading ‘Glorious 39 (Blu-ray Review)’

Taking a look at Director Tony Scott’s filmography, it’s easy to see that he loves movies about vehicles and that he has a deep appreciation for speed. Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Crimson Tide, and The Taking of Pelham 123, represent just a few of his earlier efforts. Now he’s back with another train movie called Unstoppable with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. Unstoppable is based on a real life incident about a runaway unmanned train and the efforts made to stop it. Continue reading ‘Unstoppable (Blu-ray Review)’

Dungeons & Dragons is a powerful brand. Even those that haven’t held their breath as they rolled a twenty-sided die have at the very least heard of it. With the global awareness of the brand, one would think that selling a movie based on the franchise would be an easy sell but it took a long time to reach the big screen. Even with a built in audience ready and eager for a movie, it still took almost thirty years for that to happen. I didn’t get a chance to see this in the theaters but you can read my fellow Why So Blu reviewer Aaron Neuwirth’s review here. I’m always up for some human vs. alien fighting though so I’m curious to see how it turns out myself. I know that both this movie and the Battle: Los Angeles movie’s trailers battled it out during the last Comic-Con leaving people in both camps excited about which one they liked the best. This classic movie is Walt Disney’s fifth full-length animated film and was based on based on Felix Salten’s book Bambi – A Life in the Woods. It was originally going to be Disney’s second release but Walt’s desire for realism delayed the movie considerably. The movie was finally released in 1942 and has finally gotten its turn for an exhaustive restoration and a release in high definition.

Thelma and Louise celebrates its 20th Anniversary with this release and it still resonates with a lot of people to this day. The movie became something of an anthem for female empowerment and triggered many discussions and disagreements once released. The concept of two women becoming fugitives due to poor judgement and circumstances was radical at the time.

I believe that there have been three major productions of Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days. The first one was with David Niven which was followed by this mini-series with Pierce Brosnan, and finally the Disney version with Steve Coogan and Jackie Chan. This three part mini-series shared the earlier entries stunt casting of various stars (mainly from television) to play small supporting parts. There have been many comedy teams throughout the years such as Laurel and Hardy or The Three Stooges, but one of the biggest acts was Abbott and Costello. The combination of the straight man schemer (Abbott) and the man perpetually in trouble (Costello) was a winning combination and led to their great success. Before Kenneth Branagh brought his own adaption of Hamlet to the big-screen in 1996, he played the role on stage under the direction Derek Jacobi who himself played Hamlet years earlier to great acclaim. The year was 1990, and Branagh was on the brink to international stardom but not quite there yet. Continue reading ‘Discovering Hamlet (DVD Review)’

For fans of the Holmes and Watson portrayed by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, a nice treat arrives this March 29th when all of their Sherlock Holmes films finally arrive on Blu-ray in one complete collection! While I never thought Bruce’s interpretation of Watson was true to the original stories, I always thought that Basil Rathbone was an excellent Sherlock Holmes. You know you’re getting old when you can remember where you were ten years ago. Me, I was at the grand opening of the House of Blues in Anaheim in Downtown Disney. Why was I there? Lit was there. Lit were opening up the venue with two sold out shows Friday and Saturday night. If memory serves me correctly. I was there and so was my entourage. It was a great double header and kicked off what would be one of the more popular and intimate venues for live music in Orange County. Fast forward this to the 10th Anniversary, and here we are. Most parents that have young children and the Disney Channel are aware of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse television show aimed at pre-schoolers. After the first movie made over $150 million at the box office, it shouldn’t surprise anyone to see a direct to video sequel being released. Although the characters from the first movie have returned, several original cast members including Drew Barrymore, Andy Garcia, Jamie Lee Curtis, Piper Perabo, and Manolo Cardona did not.

The genesis of what many people consider Martin Scorsese’s finest achievement happened thanks to Robert De Niro. De Niro had read Jake La Motta’s autobiography while he was filming The Godfather Part II and he was convinced that it would make a compelling movie and began to try to convince director Martin Scorsese to direct it.
