For this San Diego Comic Con post, I am going to have to emphasize the word ‘unfortunate’, because it was very unfortunate that I could not make it to the panel for the animated series The Legend of Korra. A new season will be premiering in the fall and it is a great show that I am very much looking forward to. This Emmy-winning sequel series to the Emmy-winning Avatar: The Last Airbender was one of the best shows on TV last year. Not just as far as animated show go, but television in general. It combines incredibly well-animated action and settings with strong characters and very interesting concepts, all while being wholly appropriate for people of all ages. While I was not able to attend the panel, which actually screened the first episode of the upcoming season (Comic Con is just too incredibly busy of a time to see everything), I was able to find some highlights from the panel, which can be found below, along with some photos and a trailer for the upcoming season. Enjoy.

No Comic Con is complete without a little bit of weirdness on one of the panels and thankfully we had a new film from writer/director/Monty Python veteran Terry Gilliam to provide plenty of weirdness. The Zero Theorem is the latest project from the famed and eccentric director of films such as 12 Monkeys and Brazil. Occurring later in the afternoon on Thursday in Hall H, it was certainly a low-key but interesting panel to watch, as Gilliam makes very interesting films, which are sometimes a success and sometimes a mess. Here is the panel description: Appearing on stage to introduce the trailer, the first 10 minutes from the film and take your questions are producers Zev Foreman (Killer Joe), Dean Zanuck (Get Low) and Terry’s daughter Amy Gilliam (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus), who produced many of the commercials featured in the film. The panel will be moderated by Gina McIntyre of the Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex. Read on to learn more about what went down on this panel as well as see some brand new photos from the film.

Given all of the Star Wars news that didn’t happen at Comic Con this year, I may as well put out an article that has to deal with another movie about Harrison Ford and a war in the stars, so here it is. Summit Entertainment had a presentation that occurred in a packed Hall H for their big, upcoming films Ender’s Game and Divergent. For those not familiar, both films are based on incredibly popular books, with Ender’s Game, in particular, being a highly regarded novel that has been a much anticipated film adaptation for quite some time. I was happy to be at this packed panel, even if I still don’t know what Divergent is yet, exactly (I’ll do some catching up at some point), because any time you put grumpy ol’ Ford in front of thousands of geeks, fun can surely occur. Read on to learn more about what went down at this presentation and to view some clips, movie pics, and panel photos.

I’ve been there for every edge-of-your-seat moment, every kill, inside Dexter’s most intimate thoughts, watching him transform before my eyes. Now, after eight amazing seasons, it’s time to say goodbye to America’s Favorite Serial Killer and most importantly for me, I was finally able to see the show’s Comic-Con panel for the first and unfortunately the last time ever. I must say this will go down as one of the most exciting days of my life. Read on and see how it all went down Thursday evening in the massive Hall H at Comic-Con 2013 in beautiful downtown San Diego, CA. Hey Hey! Happy Hunger Games everyone! Many in line for the packed Hall H presentation on Saturday at San Diego Comic Con were very pumped to see what was next in the world of The Hunger Games, with knowledge that Lionsgate would be featuring a panel for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Fortunately, along with a description of the panel that I will provide, the brand new trailer for the film also hit the web today, making it much easier for me to show you, rather than tell. Still, if you would like to learn more about what went down at the panel, as well as check out the new trailer, and get a look at some photos from the panel, continue on reading or scrolling through this post.

Saturday was a huge day for Hall H at San Diego Comic Con this year. To bring some up to speed, Hall H is the largest hall at the San Diego Convention Center and many of the biggest panels (now mainly dominated by movies and television) are scheduled within this location. There have been many big surprises and huge news revealed in Hall H in the past, but this year may just be one of the greatest and craziest days ever. I of course understand how hyperbolic that sounds, but given the number of announcements, the quality of all the footage shown, the energy coming from all the actors, producers, and directors on stage, and of course the energy coming from the crowd, it is hard to say that July 20th at Comic Con was something forgettable for those who waited hours to get into Hall H. One of the craziest announcements was that of a Batman/Superman movie being developed by WB, with director Zack Snyder and executive producer Christopher Nolan. Continue on to learn more about this big news.

This is a big jump to way towards the end of Friday’s activities in Hall H at San Diego Comic Con this year, but I figure Spider-man is popular enough to have more people curious about what went on here than other panels I was able to witness. Here is the official description of what was in store for audiences: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 — Last year, Andrew Garfield, along with director Marc Webb and producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, launched a new chapter in the Peter Parker story with The Amazing Spider-Man. With a new installment in the franchise due in 2014, join us in Hall H for one of Comic-Con’s most highly anticipated panels to hear a bit about what awaits Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Having gotten to sit through the entire panel and take a first look at footage from this web-slinging sequel, I will have plenty to share in the rest of this post.

Hey there! You will have to bare with me, as there are plenty of exciting things going on at this year’s San Diego Comic Con and I only have so much time to cover certain aspects of it. This post is simple: I have two new R-rated trailers for upcoming films Riddick and Kick Ass 2. Below you will find those trailers embeded and can take a look for yourself. Here is a description for the panel that took place on Friday at Comic Con: Universal Pictures presents an all-star panel featuring talent from two of its highly anticipated summer films. In attendance will be stars and filmmakers from the action-comedy Kick-Ass 2. Attending from Riddick will be the action-adventure’s star/producer Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious 6), along with actors Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) and Dave Bautista (The Man with the Iron Fists) and Riddick‘s writer/director David Twohy (The Fugitive). Continue on to check out the trailers.

If there is an excuse to put up a post about Predator, I’ll be there. At this year’s San Diego Comic Con, Predator will be making a bit of s splash on the exhibit floor, as fans will be able to pre-order the 3D Blu-ray, which will also feature an option and all new experience. For an extra cost, fans will be able to order this new Blu-ray and have their image used to make them the victim as a customized figurine is created using 3D Systems 3D printing technology that features the Predator alien holding the fans’ severed head. That sounds a little insane and a little awesome, but that can also describe Comic Con in general. Read on to learn more about this Blu-ray event.

Insidious certainly caused a stir for us at Why So Blu?, as I know that Brian, Gerard. and myself, at the very least, were big fans of the 2010 horror film that ended up being a huge success. Director James Wan is certainly a busy guy these days, with his latest film The Conjuring arriving in theaters next week, his prep for the next Fast & Furious film currently in progress, not to mention the sequel to Insidious, which is the subject of this post. Insidious: Chapter 2 will have a presence at San Diego Comic Con, allowing fans a chance to dive into “The Further”. In this article, you can learn more about the Comic Con plans for Insidious: Chapter 2 and take a look at the trailer for the film.

Here is something that I am happy to spread more knowledge of, as I have been following this project for some time. I know I am not wrong in saying that we at Why So Blu are big Batman fans and look forward to future adventures involving him, let alone rewatching and possibly even rediscovering things about the Caped Crusader that continue to entertain us. Legends of the Knight is an upcoming documentary film that is focused on how Batman has been a hero for many people in real life. Filmmaker Brett Culp has set out to make a film that goes over the cultural impact that Batman has had over the year and thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, the film will be released to the public. Portions of the documentary film Legends of the Knight will debut at a SDCC panel on Friday, July 29 at 10:30am in room 26AB. The independent, not-for-profit film explores the inspirational impact of Batman and the power of heroic storytelling. Read on to learn more about this project/event.

Try as I might, I just never got around to watching the NBC series Hannibal as of yet. I attempted the first episode when it originally aired, but low and behold the Sandman got the best of me that ill fated night. However, I have heard grand things about the series! And it’s even been picked up for a second season. So you know things must be going good for it! So I’m pleased to present you with our first Comic-Con 2013 post of the year as Gaumont International Television has announced their attendance at this year’s spectacular with a panel entitled “Hannibal: Feed Your Fear,” which will feature Bryan Fuller, David Slade, Martha De Laurtentiis and Hugh Dancy. The panel is set for July 18th at 6:45pm – 7:45pm. Check out the full press release below for more information! Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2013: ‘Hannibal’ Panel Set For Thursday, July 18th’

Following the special screenings and Q&As for The Mist and the double-dose of Guillermo del Toro features, I was then able to catch a screening of the horror remake Maniac at the Hero Complex Film Festival in LA. Maniac is a remake of an 80s horror feature of the same name and features the same basic story of depravity, as we follow a serial killer around and watch him scalp his female victims. The separating factor for this version is how stylish it is. Along with the 80s synth-infused soundtrack, Maniac is almost completely shot from the perspective of the killer, bringing a lot of credence to the challenging filmmaking techniques used to accomplish this. However, deciphering between which is great, the style or the overall effectiveness of the film, is where the challenge in accepting Maniac really lies.

Following The Mist, I was also able to attend another very entertaining scheduled event at the Hero Complex Film Festival, a back-to-back screening of the The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth. Both are films written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, who provided an hour-long Q&A in between features. For anyone who is familiar with Guillermo del Toro, they would know that he is one of the most entertaining directors to listen to, as he is always full of passion for his projects and isn’t one to censor himself (not to mention his wonderful Mexican accent). This entire conversation has been recorded and provided in a link. Read on to learn more about what he had to say about his past films, his career as a filmmaker, his personal life, and his upcoming feature films, most notably Pacific Rim (Post Updated with latest Pacific Rim trailer).

I was happy to be able to attend the Hero Complex Film Festival in Hollywood this year and check out a few of the events that were on the lineup. For me, the first scheduled event that I took part in was a screening of The Mist (an original 35mm print) followed by a Q&A. Initially I was led to believe that only writer/director Frank Darabont would be in attendance, but I was happy to see that star Tom Jane was also on hand to discuss this 2007 horror film. As a big fan of The Mist, I was very excited to check out the film with an audience, my first time on the big screen since Thanksgiving 2007 (an amazing release date for this of all films). Read on to learn more about what went down at this Q&A, as well as find the entire recording of this conversation.

I have already reviewed the Closing Night film of the 2013 Newport Beach Film Festival (the very entertaining The Way Way Back), but this is my final article in regards to the films I saw on Thursday night, closing out my time covering the festival. It has been an exciting and exhausting experience, but I have been very pleased with the amount of coverage I have been able to provide this year and look forward to continuing to cover the festival next year. The final round of films I will be reviewing here are very different from each other, but have their merits. The Iceman is a crime drama based on true events that recounts the story of one of America’s most notorious contract killers. Ghost Team One is a pseudo-documentary made in the vein of Paranormal Activity, but handled with a very comedic touch. I was looking forward to both of these features and can now delve into what I thought about them.

The closing night film for the 2013 Newport Beach Film Festival is a real audience pleaser. The Way Way Back is a fairly standard coming-of-age story about an introverted boy opening up to others thanks to good-natured people he befriends, away from his family. The film is not breaking any new ground nor is it taking a familiar story to the next level in the way a film like Adventureland did, but it is incredibly likable, thanks to some key performances and a winning level of energy. Not every film needs to be something new and in the case of The Way Way Back, it succeeds by going back to the basics and letting us enjoy a traditional tale.
