Dead Space 2 is a fantastic follow up to the original Science Fiction/Survival Horror sleeper hit from Visceral Games and Electronic Arts. It is not as much a significant upgrade as say Assassin’s Creed to Assassin’s Creed II, but it takes what worked very well in an already great first entry and adds little tweaks and a more diverse setting to make the gameplay and overall experience very satisfying. I think a lot of people (especially guys) dream of being a superhero and got our fix through comics, movies, or videogames. I grew up on a steady diet of DC and Marvel comics and sat through countless iterations of Batman (the 60s show, guest starring on Scooby Doo, etc.) and the SuperFriends. I know I am dating myself but I bet there’s a lot of you that did the same thing.

The great thing about the Playstation Store is the amount of highly entertaining games that can be had for those frugal at heart. With games usually topping out at a cost of $14.99 and most hovering around $9.99, you can build quite a library on your PS3’s hard drive in no time. One of the most recent additions to store is Marvel Pinball, brought to us from Zen Studios, creators of Zen Pinball. Pinball tends to focus on a specific audience and can easily fail in the transition from physical table to video game. Does Marvel Pinball do the format any justice? I don’t get a chance to write about video games often, so I am pleased to be able to provide a rundown of the games I have enjoyed playing the most this year. I may not be a professional game reviewer, but I know what I like vs. what frustrates me in video games; and even in a time where my free time has dwindled (yes, part of my living involves watching movies and writing about them, but it’s still work, dammit!), I still managed to play a lot of games. It was about a year ago or so when I came across an article on the internet (or as my father so mistakenly calls it; the ‘telecom’) that said roughly only one-third of video games turn a profit. That was rather dismally shocking, considering all the money that’s spent annually by consumers on the massive range of titles and gaming consoles, including PC’s. I guess if you think about it, how many titles actually get sequels or spin-offs? Mario is a given. Star Wars titles are pretty successful. Halo has rocked it out now for a while too. But few have the staying power of one of the original video games that helped pioneer the entire genre; Pac-Man. Continue reading ‘Pac-Man Championship Edition DX for PS3 (Game Review)’

And then there was light…sabers…two actually. Yes, after the impressive sales of 2008’s Star Wars The Force Unleashed, it only made sense to build on that success and deliver a sequel. After all, the first one wasn’t just a video game, it was the only piece of Star Wars non-movie material that George Lucas declared official Star Wars canon. That means what you saw and played in that game, officially took place and is on par with the movies (between episode III and IV to be exact). Few retired video game systems have the nostalgia and replay value as the original 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System. The system spawned such titles as Super Mario Bros., Contra and the almighty gridiron classic, Tecmo Bowl. The football classic later found life on the Super Nintendo in 1993 in the form of the best-selling Tecmo Super Bowl. So what if you really love the game but do not own a Nintendo product?
