I’m not really big on movies that focus on mental illness. Most of them usually end up being cripplingly sad or fraught with turmoil throughout the entire film. When I go to a movie I like to be lifted up in some way. Another thing is that this film focuses on the lives of two poets. Which in my experience usually means you’re in for a lot of pretentious ramblings that make me want to pull my eyes out from boredom. But I’m very happy to report that Touched with Fire is a powerful, moving, and sometimes funny exception to that rule.

I was a little skeptical going into this film. I got the distinct impression that this was just gonna be a documentary about some young white dude who got caught up in drugs and became famous by playing black music. But what kept me glued to the screen was that I grew to understand that DJ AM actually had a profound respect not just for Rap and hip-hop music, but for the surrounding culture as well. He spent a lot of time scouring through old record stores to find the origins of the beats we’re all familiar with today. You combine all that with the fact that he might’ve been one of the most kind, generous and giving people in the music industry, and you realize just how much of a loss his passing truly was. Get your Ski-Masks ready, cuz we’re goin’ on a heist! Triple 9 has a massive cast of stars and talent that are perfectly picked for these roles. A group of ex-military dirty cops set out on one big final bank robbery before they go their separate ways off into the sunset. But things take a turn when Russian Mob boss Irena (Kate Winslet) decides that they need to take on one more score before their “debt” is settled. Normally this wouldn’t be a big deal, but the job in question requires them to break into a Homeland Security building. Their plan to allow them enough time to escape before the Cops arrive is to use Chris Allen (Casey Afleck), who recently transferred to their precinct as a pawn to distract the authorities while they make their get away.

Six long years ago a little comic by the name of Scarlet first hit the shelves. I picked it up without ever having heard about it for two simple reasons. First, it was written by the tried and true Brian Michael Bendis, arguably one of the best, and hardest working writers in the business today. Second, it was illustrated by Alex Maleev, whose simultaneously raw yet refined style is undeniably top notch. As an added bonus, Bendis & Maleev have a history of working together, and their synergistic capabilities had proven to be stellar. So I picked up the book, and it instantly became one of my favorites…and then, five issues in…it ended. Fans were understandably disappointed, until 2013 when the duo served up two more issues, no worse for the time off, and that seemed to be well and truly it for Scarlet. So when I recently walked into the comic shop and saw the cover declaring itself on the shelf: “Scarlet is Back!” my jaw dropped and my eyes bugged out. After having read it, I’m here to tell you, this book is better than ever. Continue reading ‘Scarlet is Back! (Comic Review)’
