We Are Your Friends (DVD Review)

We_Are_Your_FriendsWith the proliferation and international appeal of electronic music it is hard to explain why such a fresh and ripe new movement hasn’t garnished more attention from the film industry. The first feature film directed by Max Joseph(Catfish: The TV Show), We Are Your Friends attempts to shine the cinematic light on this relatively new and emerging genre of music. Following the story of a young up-and-coming DJ, Cole Carter(Zac Efron), We Are Your Friends brings the audience into the club, and the heart of club music. Quickly taken under the wing of veteran DJ James Reed(Wes Bentley), Cole begins to find his own style and works his way into the main stream circuit. Utilizing a wonderful soundtrack, a few scenes of drug-induced surrealism, a great performance from Wes Bentley, and the age old tale of self-discovery We Are Your Friends sounds like a great way to spend a Friday night, but somehow fails to find its beat.

Aaron’s Most Anticipated Films Of 2016 (Based On What’s Scheduled)

panther-001This is always a tough list to put together. I see over a hundred movies a year and a lot of those films are ones I’ve been anticipating to some degree, while many others are smaller films that randomly arrive on the calendar months after the start of the year. I am aware there are a lot of directors I admire who have films being completed in time for Cannes and other film festivals and are expected to be in theaters sometime this year as well, but I’ve decided to only go with what has been scheduled so far and go month by month. I am curious to hear what others have to say as well, so feel free to add thoughts in the comments.

There are quite a few surprises in store, as well. In any event – I give you my favorite films of 2015!  Continue reading ‘Gerard’s Top Films of 2015!’

The Dark Knight III, The Master Race

DKIII

It’s been 30 years since Frank Miller forever changed the character of Batman with his seminal work, The Dark Knight Returns. Prior to this pivotal book, Batman was best known as a zany caped crusader, a joking, colorful, day time crime fighter full of quips. Miller found the essence of Batman, the dark, disturbing, psychotic vigilante. This book hit the bullseye and showed the world the potential Batman could have. Without it, there is no Tim Burton’s Batman. There is no Christopher Nolan trilogy. There is no Batfleck. Continue reading ‘The Dark Knight III, The Master Race’

Aaron’s Top Ten Films Of 2015

doof warrior2015 has come to an end and now I get to post my favorite films of the year. This is never an easy list to put together and having seen 150+ films theatrically this past year, it was a challenge, but it is always fun to do and I’ve come up with a ranked list of 30 films. I am very satisfied with this final list I have put together, mainly because it is a reflection of my own opinions that I am happy to share.  So here we go with my picks for the Top Ten films of 2015 and the runner-ups. (As per usual, I placed lots of Easter Eggs hidden in all the pictures).

Shohan’s Top 10 Movie List for 2015

Shohan's Top 10 Movie List for 2015So concludes this year of movie adventures!  There have definitely been some surprising highs along with a few soul crushing lows, (cough) Fantastic 4 (cough).  But through it all, we have persevered to reach the truly great films of the past year that keep giving us a reason to leave our cozy homes in favor of the Multi-plex.

This year Marvel didn’t exactly knock it out of the park like they did last year with the likes of “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and “Guardians of the Galaxy”. This year we got “Age of Ultron” and “Ant Man”.  Both were decent enough.  But compared to what we’ve seen in the past, they didn’t quite meet the high standard that Marvel established for themselves.  “Ultron” had so many elements and characters that it was actually hard to follow what was happening on screen!  Ant Man had some ground breaking shrinking effects that we haven’t seen since “Honey I Shrunk the Kids”.  But it somewhat failed to endear you to the characters struggles.  Both Ant Man and Ultron seemed more like place holders to tide us over until the next phase of Marvel awesomeness. And with “Captain America: Civil War” and “Doctor Strange” coming next year, I’m sure they’ll live up to the hype.

Gerard’s Top Blu-rays of 2015!

Wow, so it’s already that time of year again when some of the Why So Blu? writing crew get together and compile their Top Blu-ray lists of the year. Generally, it’s a “Top-10” list but as you can see I have omitted the “10” part, because there were tons of new releases, that while not necessarily being good films, their Blu-ray counterpart was exceptional. That, and I may go over ten, so being non-specific helps. If you want to know what my Top films of 2015 are in general then you’ll have to wait a couple of weeks for that list to drop. This is strictly a top Blu-ray list – whether the film sucked or not – how was the Blu-ray? Keep reading and find out!
