It’s Official: J.J. Abrams to Direct Star Wars: Episode VII

Yesterday, the internet practically suffered a hemorrhage after hearing word that J.J. Abrams had most likely been signed on to direct Star Wars: Episode VII.  This evening, Disney has finally sent the official press release to confirm this report.  This is certainly interesting news to say the least, given that J.J. Abrams is now essentially responsible for the two biggest sci-fi properties of all time, Star Trek and Star Wars.  Surely there are those who are plenty excited about this news, just as much as there are those who are not so excited.  Regardless, this does bring us another step closer to the arrival of a brand new generation of Star Wars films, which I do think to be an exciting development, regardless of who is involved.  Continue on to read the official press release concerning J.J. Abrams involvement as director.

James Bond’s Newest Adventure “Skyfall” Hits Blu-ray This February

The latest James Bond film, Skyfall, is arriving on Blu-ray this February and I am quite excited for it.  Currently ranking as one of the most successful Bond films of all time, both critically (Great reviews all over and 5 Oscar Nominations) and commercially (One Billion Dollars *holds pinky to lip, Dr. Evil style*), this entry in the James Bond canon has pleased many everywhere, including myself (Review Here).  I really enjoyed this action-packed feature for all its elaborate set pieces, style, and true Bond coolness, and I am truly excited to witness Roger Deakins’ gorgeous cinematography on the Blu-ray format.  As is the case with all of the James Bond films, Skyfall looks to be packed with special features and I am sure they will cover almost every aspect of the film.  Skyfall arrives on Blu-ray February 12th and you can read the press release below to learn more about this upcoming release.

‘BOSS: Season Two’ Arriving And Taking Power On Blu-ray In April

On April 9th, Season 2 of Boss debuts on Blu-ray and I am curious to see more of this strongly acted Starz series, starring Golden Globe winner Kelsey Grammer.  I previously reviewed the first season (review HERE) and was left thinking that the second season could most likely be even better and more confident in presenting the type of show that it is.  Now I will have a chance to see it, as the Blu-ray does arrive in April, as well as on DVD and in Digital Download form.  As some may know already, Boss is a political drama series starring Kelsey Grammer as the mayor of Chicago.  The previous season introduced me to the intriguing world of this series and had a very good looking and sounding Blu-ray presentation.  Getting the chance to see what’s next has me looking forward to this release.  Continue on to learn more about this upcoming Season 2 set.

‘The Master’ Will Be Processed And Ready For Blu-ray This February

I have to say that I was not as taken by The Master as I wanted to be, but reading about it again has made me interested in revisiting it.  Here is some of the press release for the Blu-ray release, coming this February:  Anchor Bay Entertainment and The Weinstein Company announced today the Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD release of THE MASTER, the innovative film that has won over audiences and critics alike.  Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood), the 1950s-set drama centers on the relationship between a charismatic intellectual known as “The Master” (Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Moneyball) who creates a belief system which catches on with other lost souls – and a young WW-II veteran (Joaquin Phoenix, Gladiator) who becomes his right-hand man.  In addition to Hoffman and Phoenix, the film also stars Amy Adams (Doubt) and Laura Dern (Little Fockers). THE MASTER heads to retail on February 26, 2013.  Read on to learn more about this upcoming release.

‘Hitchcock’, Old And New Versions, Arrive On Blu-ray This March

On March 12, Fox Home Entertainment is releasing both the film, Hitchcock, starring Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren, along with a classic collection of Alfred Hitchcock’s films, which are being released onto Blu-ray in a 3-disc set.  This collection includes Notorious, Rebecca, and Spellbound.  Hitchcock was met with some criticism regarding the film’s plotting and style revolving around the making of Psycho, but I thought it was light, fluffy fun, with some fun work from the ensemble cast involved (review HERE).  The collection of some of Hitch’s classic films, on the other hand, is great because, as stated, they are classic films.  Now with both arriving on Blu-ray on the same day, be sure to continue on to read and learn more about these upcoming releases.

‘Flight’ debuts on Blu-ray February 5th!

“One of the most memorable movie-going experiences of the year” (Richard Roeper, “Richard Roeper & The Movies”), the “keenly felt, knuckle-biting drama” (Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly) FLIGHT makes its Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Download and On Demand debut on February 5, 2013 from Paramount Home Media Distribution.  Hailed by critics and audiences alike, FLIGHT is directed by renowned filmmaker Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Cast Away) and stars the incomparable Denzel Washington in a performance that “will be talked about for years” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) and has earned him Golden Globe®, SAG and Critics’ Choice award nominations.  Written by John Gatins, the film tells the story of Whip Whitaker, a commercial airline pilot who miraculously lands a plummeting airplane during a breathtaking sequence described as “the hairiest, scariest, most realistic, and thrilling plane crash in movie history” (Richard Corliss, Time).  But despite his heroics, Whip comes under investigation and begins what may be an even more harrowing personal descent.  FLIGHT also boasts an exceptional supporting cast including John Goodman, Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly, Bruce Greenwood, Melissa Leo and Brian Geraghty.  Continue reading ‘‘Flight’ debuts on Blu-ray February 5th!’

Gerard’s Top 10 Super Duper Films of 2012!

No, nothing fancy, just trying to be creative with the title. Is it working? Probably not, but you get the gist of it. I, hereby, present my Top 10 theatrical releases of 2012 (most are already on Blu-ray for your viewing pleasure and some are about to hit the high definition format in the coming weeks) and a few that were edged out a bit in the running, that should also be given a look, because they are exceptional films in their own right. It’s sort of been a peculiar year in film, with tons of films flying in under my radar that I did not actually catch in theaters, but that were made available to me via Blu-ray, that did make it on this list. Peculiar or not, 2012 was a great year of film, so dig in while it’s still hot! Continue reading ‘Gerard’s Top 10 Super Duper Films of 2012!’

Gerard’s Worst Films of 2012

This worst-of list will not be as long as my other Top 10 lists due to the fact that some films that were downright unwatchable weren’t even watched all the way through. I decided not to subject myself to them, so some of these selections will probably just get “honorable worst-of” mentions instead, or a combination thereof. The films that I did watch in their entirety and hated are listed below. There are several big flicks on this list, with massive budgets, but most should not have even gotten made. Some had great marketing, some looked great in the trailers, but they fizzled out at the end. With that being said, sit back, relax, and enjoy my WORST films of 2012 list.  Continue reading ‘Gerard’s Worst Films of 2012′

Gerard’s Top 10 Bad Ass Blu-rays of 2012

It’s that not-so-dreaded time of the year where I unleash my Top 10 Blu-rays of 2012. This year I thought I’d go against the grain the best that I could and just limit myself on picking Blu-rays that actually made a statement in terms of video, audio, and special features, instead of films that were cool that got the benefit of the doubt because they’re on Blu-ray. I think I cheated last year and did just that. Not this year, though. Some of my selections may have tons of special features and some may not. What can be said is that the TLC that went into the Blu-rays themselves is fairly evident and I have taken notice in that regard. I’ve also got a couple of imports that should be noted, so without further ado…I present my Top 10 bad ass Blu-rays of 2012. Kick it!  Continue reading ‘Gerard’s Top 10 Bad Ass Blu-rays of 2012′

The Disturbing Horror Story, ‘The Bay’ Arrives March 5

Coming this March to DVD and Digital Download, The Bay, from director Barry Levinson (Rain Man).  I missed my chance to see this film, when it was in limited release and have not yet tried to rent it OnDemand, but now I wont have to worry about missing it, come March 5, 2013.  From what I have been told by a colleague of mine,The Bay may be one of the scariest films to have come out in recent memory.  I will be curious to find out of that is true, but for now, I can only sit back and wait to see if this story of a town infected by a deadly disease turns into something that I really end up being terrified by and liking a lot.  Continue on to learn more about this upcoming release, including the special features available on the disc.

HERE COMES THE BOOM Debuting on Blu-ray™ with UltraViolet™ February 5th

Coming this February to Blu-ray – Here Comes the Boom, starring Kevin James (Paul Blart: Mall Cop), who takes on the role of a teacher trying to save the school’s music program by becoming an MMA fighter.  I will say this, I may not be a big fan of what has come out of Happy Madison production lately, but I was strangely intrigued by this film.  Maybe it’s because it looked like a more lighthearted version of the great film Warrior from 2011, but something about the trailer made me want to see it.  Of course, no one wanted to go with me, so I didn’t get a chance to check it out.  I am aware it is not going to win any awards and may not be as good as I want it to be, but dammit, I’m going to see it eventually, and I will have my chance on February 5th.  Read on to see the full press release, which lists all of the extra features that will be available on this fully loaded Blu-ray.

WILLOW Comes To Blu-ray For The First Time In March

This March, the enjoyable fantasy adventure film, Willow, hits Blu-ray for the first time.  For those unaware, Willow is a classic good vs. evil fantasy story developed by George Lucas and director Ron Howard.  This is a film that I grew up with and while it is not necessarily the benchmark of fantasy adventure films (despite the innovative use of digital morphing technology), there is certainly a lot of fun to be had thanks to a lot of the creativity for the time, the fantastic score by James Horner, and of course the surprisingly enjoyable dynamic duo made up by Warwick Davis (the Harry Potter franchise) and Val Kilmer (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang).  This blu-ray will feature an all-new digital transfer supervised by Lucas film, never-before-seen footage and more.  It arrives March 12, 2013.  Continue on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release.
