In the age we live in, it is unfortunate that getting a mainstream superhero movie’s trailer less than a year (or at least 9 months) in advance is some sign of trouble. For various reasons, despite the success of director Josh Trank’s Chronicle and the presence of proven acting talents in the form of Miles Teller (Whiplash, The Spectacular Now), Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot, The Adventures of Tin Tin), Michael B. Jordon (Fruitvale Station, Chronicle), and Kate Mara (House of Cards), a good portion of people have been screaming about this new Fantastic Four’s existence from the start. It is as if going for something different is suddenly the worst idea possible and everyone suddenly loved the previous F4 films starring Jessica Alba as a scientist and Mr. Fantastic played by Horatio Hornblower (and I would be impressed to see a majority of geeks who knew how to spell, let alone pronounce, Ioan Grufford’s name offhand). I don’t even want to get into the silliness involving the ‘controversy’ of casting a black actor in the part of Johnny Storm. All that is to say that Fox has now released the first trailer for the upcoming reboot of Fantastic Four and it looks solid enough, as far as vague teaser trailer go. I guess I should not be too surprised that we are getting a sequel to a kung-fu movie that practically lends itself to having further installments. I mean, if we got a Smokin Aces 2 then why not, right? So here we are with another dip into the world of martial arts, filtered through the mind of star/co-writer/composer/executive producer RZA. He is back as the titular man with the iron fists in an all new adventure that is coming to Blu-ray on April 14th. The Man with the Iron Fists 2 is another kung-fu adventure film that will be available in an unrated Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. Continue on to learn more about this film and to check out the trailer.

If there’s one thing I know for certain in my life, it’s that I have to check out Whiplash next February 24th when Sony Pictures Home Entertainment brings it home on the Blu-ray format. I feel like I am the only person in the movie reviewing biz that hasn’t seen this one and all my peers have done nothing but rave about it. Jacob Cheung’s (Twin Dragons) elaborate wuxia-fantasy WHITE HAIRED WITCH debuts on Blu-ray™, DVD and digital March 10 from Well Go USA Entertainment. The martial arts extravaganza is loosely adapted from Liang Yusheng’s novel Baifa Monü Zhuan and stars Fan Bingbing (Iron Man 3, X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Huang Xiaoming (Eastern Bandits, Ip Man 2) as a pair of star-crossed lovers whose love could change the fate of the nation. If Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke ever made an awkward comedy, it may turn out something like Force Majeure, the dark Swedish comedy that received the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. This Golden Globe nominee is a film about a family vacation that goes awry, following a moment of weakness from one of the family members. From there, we get a film that studies the characters involved and what to think, given the key event that took place. That is very vague, but the film is most definitely worth seeking out, despite its strange snub for Best Foreign Film at this years Academy Awards. Here’s a film that I regrettably missed in theaters. It was not receiving the biggest push, but I have heard nothing but great things and now Beyond the Lights is up for an Academy Award for one of its songs. This drama/musical stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who has had a breakout year between this film and Belle, and Nate Parker, in a film that brings to ambitious people together, though one is more damaged than the other. The film also stars Minnie Driver and Danny Glover in what is a supposedly a strong drama that I am excited to check out. Okay, here we go. I don’t know a thing about this little Italian post apocalyptic Mad Max/Escape From New York-looking action movie from 1983 that Scream Factory is going to be putting out. However, as a kid who grew up living in ma and pa VHS rental stores where you thought the box looked awesome so you gave it a shot and as a connoisseur of low budget action/sci fi/horror/exploitation trash; I’m pretty excited to check this out. IMDB’s plot synopsis reads “They killed to survive…” and I think that’s all I really need to go on at this point. I also love to marvel at pristine Blu-ray quality of these low budget films that have no business looking as gorgeous or cleaned up as they do. Is anyone with me here? Steve McQueen was certainly “the man” when it comes to the start of action heroes, and his run in the 1960s and 1970s. Bullitt, The Getaway, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Great Escape and many others are downright staples of anyone studying action in film. And McQueen was easily a star. Here we have a documentary celebrating that legendary career and also giving us the story who he was as a man too. This documentary features the likes of Robert Downey Jr, Pierce Brosnan, Gary Oldman and many others talking about his importance to film and the legacy. Shout! I’m really interested in finally checking this one out!
