The Longest Ride (Blu-ray Review)

Nicholas Sparks is responsible for a lot of successful romance dramas. Sure, not all of them have been all that well received (The Notebook seems to be the only film that stands out as generally seen as good), but they cater to a particular crowd that really enjoys them. The Longest Ride arrived this past spring and while it didn’t have the biggest theatrical impact, I am sure there were many who found themselves satisfied with this adaptation. Now the film is on Blu-ray for any romantic out there to enjoy.

I really wanted to love this movie. I really did. Although the special effects are very amazing and rather stunning; it is the same old same old Happy Madison movie formula. Sandler is the hero who doesn’t have self-confidence, James is the best friend who does believe in the hero and serves as a moral compass, Dinklage plays the over-sexed and inappropriate sleazy friend, and Gad plays the under-sexed and awkward nerd. It was disappointing.

Southpaw is defined in the sport of boxing as the stance where the boxer has his right hand and right foot forward, leading with right jabs, and following with a left cross right hook. Southpaw is the normal stance for a left-handed boxer. Fictional boxer Rocky Balboa, for example, was a southpaw. Therefore, I think you can pretty much conjure up that Jake Gyllenhaal’s character in Southpaw is a southpaw. You picking up what I’m dropping here because I’m pretty much lost on what point I want to make. So now that you know what a southpaw is I guess we can move on to talking about the 2015 sports drama film, Southpaw. Just out of curiosity how many times did I mention my keyword in this first paragraph? If you said seven times, have someone in the room where you’re at clap for you.

Two of the most eagerly awaited titles in Synapse Films history finally make their debuts on Blu-ray and DVD on October 13, 2015, just in time for Halloween! Many will remember Manos: The Hands of Fate from its infamous appearance on Mystery Science Theater 3000 way back in the day. It was the movie that the crew of that were the closest to giving up on . Its also a hell of a funny episode. But now, you’re getting it without that, but remastered for Blu-ray along with Mosquito from Synapse Films.

Any Day is an alright movie about faith and perseverance even when things seem at their darkest but it doesn’t beat the viewer over the head with a bible or religion. It’s slow moving but has a great cast. And BONUS…Sean Bean does NOT die in this one! 
An incredible ensemble women’s cast with a very well written script makes this DVD a keeper! Dakota Fanning continues to provide the most powerful performances, every time she’s on the screen. She has always been a favorite of mine and still continues to amaze me. But in this film, the one to really watch is Australian born, Danielle Macdonald, who completely helms this strong women’s cast of great talents. So put on your thinking caps and get ready for a well told mystery that will have you guessing all the way to the end.
