We now have a new trailer for Terminator Genisys, the fifth entry in the ongoing cyborg action franchise (though it is a partial reboot as well). Whether we wanted another Terminator film or not, Paramount has decided to bring back Arnold Schwarzenegger and produce a brand new action-adventure set in the future, directed by Alan Taylor of Game of Thrones and Thor: The Dark World fame. The film also stars Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Jason Clark, Spartacus’ Jai Courtney, Doctor Who’s Matt Smith, and The Good, The Bad, and The Weird’s Lee Byung-hun, giving me enough to be interested. Ideally this will at least be a fun entry into the series and allow for some new ground to be covered, especially given the proposed trilogy that is planned. That said, I was burned hard by Terminator Salvation, so my hopes can only go so high. Continue on to watch the trailer for the film.

I find there to be a comfortable understanding in films about characters that go on journeys to find themselves. Regardless of the reason and whether or not the story is based on a real person, I can expect to see a certain kind of arc play out. We will learn what we need to learn about this character, watch them progress, hit various blocks in their path (physically and mentally), and eventually come to some sort of emotional catharsis. Sure, that sums up a lot of movies in general, but these kinds of movies are hardly subtle, yet often quite fulfilling. Maybe it is just due to having such a singular focus when it comes to this kind of story, but I certainly find myself quite invested in them. It also helps when such strong work is on display, which brings me to my thoughts on the rather excellent film Wild.

One of the best shows…well, ever, is coming to Blu-ray. The Wire is both one of the greatest TV shows of all time and also one of the least represented when it comes to all the Emmys and Golden Globes it should have won. With that in mind, the expansion of HBO’s availability at least means more people will now be able to see the critically acclaimed crime drama series. First it is going to make its high definition debut on HBO Go, but coming summer of 2015, the series will be released on Blu-ray. Continue on to learn more about this very exciting news.

Isn’t it funny to think that Alex Proyas’ 2004 sci-fi action-thriller I, Robot is already ten years old? It doesn’t seem that long. The CG effects don’t look aged. The actors, save for a young Shia LaBeouf, don’t look like they’ve aged all that much, either. The story hasn’t aged, as is evidenced by the fact that a 1950 novella by legendary author Isaac Asimov was adapted into an existing screenplay to create the film we know. In my eyes, it’s a somewhat timeless film, an opinion aided by the film’s smart wardrobe efforts. So, is ten years too soon for a film with a similar premise, even if the end result is a drastically different film? Automata makes for an interesting viewing experience, not only for its themes and visuals, but also the questions about its similarities to other films. Continue reading ‘Automata (Blu-ray Review)’

An imaginative animated tale for the pre-school/kindergarten set, The Hero Of Color City chronicles the adventures of a diverse band of crayons that come alive in a little boy’s room when he drifts off to sleep. Replete with valuable life lessons, this enchanting story will entertain and inspire in a stunningly rendered and utterly unique animated world. In support of the December 2 release, Magnolia Pictures has partnered with the non-profit organization, The Crayon Collection. “BLACK SAILS: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON” begins in 1715. The Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean is at its apex. The former British colony of New Providence Island is now lawless territory, controlled by a few dozen of the most notorious pirate captains in history. The most feared among them is Captain Flint (Toby Stephens). As the British Navy returns to these waters, and the threat of extinction looms, another side of Flint emerges. A man driven by deep, complicated, even romantic motives. He will ally himself with the beautiful Eleanor Guthrie (Hannah New), daughter of the local smuggling kingpin who turns the pirates’ loot into profits. Together, they forge a plan to hunt the ultimate prize, and by winning it, stave off reclamation of their home by a resurgent empire. Arrayed against them are a series of opponents: rival captains, jealous of Flint’s power; Eleanor’s father, whose ambitions for the island conflict with his daughter’s; and a young sailor, recently recruited onto Flint’s crew, who will somehow manage to constantly undermine his captain’s agenda. His name is John Silver (Luke Arnold). Continue reading ‘Black Sails Season One: Bonus Feature – Dressed to Kill’

In years to come, we’re going to look back and forget Marvel was ever “taking a big risk” with Guardians Of The Galaxy. The property was based off one of their most obscure titles and focused on weird galactic space adventure featuring no household name characters. And to lead it all was a lesser proven lead, Chris Pratt. With both the hugely positive response from critics and fans alike along with being the year’s biggest box office success, both those things are soon to change. It’s fantatstic to think this all was the product of a man whose filmmaking roots come from Troma, James Gunn. And he doesn’t forget where he came from either. Did you spot Lloyd Kaufmann in the film? Also, who WASN’T jamming out to “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” after this movie dropped? Continue reading ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy (Blu-ray Review)’

If the year 2011 taught us nothing but the fact that good things can come from rebooting a beloved franchise, then I’d be alright to call it a day right here and now. Never in my wildest dreams could I have ever conjured up such a crazy notion that the quirky Planet of the Apes franchise could ever be resurrected after that feeble attempt by Tim Burton (I really wish they could have went through with the Adam Rifkin script) way back in the summer of 2001 before our economy took a crap and I have been broke ever since because of low interest rates. However, I digress. We are not here to discuss our nation’s economy because if the fictional ape character of Caesar was real, I have no doubts that it would thrive once again under his direction. All hail Caesar, right? Exactly! That’s exactly the sentimentality I want you all to have over the course of the next five minutes or so as I impregnate your mind with a world dominated by apes, or at least on the cusp of that becoming a reality in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
