SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE Drills Its Way To Blu-ray March 18!

Slumber-Party-MassacreAs you could probably predict, I’m very excited about this one.  This is one of the most notable “Golden Age” slasher films of the 1980s.  When doing your research on the era, this one is a pivotal movie to add to your watching.  Scream Factory had originally released the first 3 movies of this series in a Roger Corman box set of the franchise.  Here they’ve been able to find and develop a new HD print of the film that they once had not been able to do.  They’ve brought over the old bonus content and added a new interview to boot.  This is an exciting release, and I’m sure the film is going to look like never before on Blu-ray.  Its nice that like the Visiting Hours/Bad Dreams 2 pack coming in February, these Shout! Factory horror movies are able to cross over into the more appropriate Scream Factory catalog (They also retroactively consider the Shout! released Blu-ray of The Stepfather a Scream Factory title, too).  There are no plans right now to release part 2 and 3 of The Slumber Party Massacre series on Blu-ray, but if the sales of this one do well, then we can be sure that they would definitely start looking into it.  This one releases in March and you can find all the details and a preorder below! Aaron’s Most Anticipated Films of 2014 By Month

imageI was seeing a lot of lists regarding people’s most anticipated films of the year and I figured I would post one too.  Many directors, writers, and actors that I admire have films hitting theaters this year, so it was nice to dig into the upcoming release schedule of this year and really figure out what I am looking forward to.  The problem then became how to rank these films.  Given that I just struggled to put together a top ten list for 2013, I figured I would take a different approach with this list.  The following is a list of films I am looking forward to, separated out by month, with mentions of a few other films as well.  One must also keep in mind that I am going mostly by mainstream films with established release dates (that could potentially change).  With all of that out of the way, here we go:

Bullet In The Face – The Complete Series (DVD Review)

Bullet-In-The-FaceShout! Factory brings home the IFC series Bullet In The Face.  The show is another from the creator of Sledge Hammer!, Alan Spencer.  It had a 6 episode run on the network, airing all the episodes between 2 nights.  The show was shot in Canada and features Eric Roberts and Eddie Izzard is special guest star role capacity.   It features a lot of outlandish comedy focusing on violence with a bit of a neo-noir tone.  While the show was short lived, it picked up notoriety from its DVD releases in other countries and now has a cult fanbase similar to the creators other works.  Its hitting shelves soon, so lets take a look at it. ‘Jack Ryan’: Plain Recruit (Movie Review)

jack ryan whysoblu thumb 2Does the world need another Jack Ryan?  The character, created by writer Tom Clancy, has never quite taken off, despite their now being five films that feature him.  The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear and Present Danger are solid spy thrillers/procedurals, but are not 90s films that many seem to single out all that often.  This sentiment was challenged in 2002 with The Sum of All Fears, the first reboot of the Jack Ryan character.  Despite receiving decent-to-positive reviews then, The Bourne Identity arrived around the same time, made around the same amount of money, but basically buried Ryan’s analyst ways, as audiences favored the kinetic spy action.  Now we have another take on the character in a new film that flirts with what audiences like in the Bourne films, but still tries to be a Clancy-style spy thriller.  The results are unfortunately very average.

Buckle Up With Cube, ‘Ride Along’ With Hart, Laugh Maybe (Movie Review)

ride along whysoblu thumbThere is not much work to be done when reviewing a film like Ride Along.  It is a comedy, so I cannot exactly say whether someone will laugh or not, as it is all subjective.  The film is a buddy cop movie, which follows a long list of mismatched pairings designed to work, based on chemistry and the potential comedy that comes with it.  Lastly, the film heavily relies on how much they enjoy a specific performer.  Basically, Ride Along is a completely inoffensive comedy that puts the spotlight on Kevin Hart.  Ice Cube is around to provide straight man support, but if you like Hart, this film may be mildly entertaining.  There is not much more to it than that, but hey, I can still dig into this film anyway and see if anything else important comes to light.

A.C.O.D. (Blu-ray Review)

ACODHi, I’m Brandon Peters and I am not an A.C.O.D.  My wife is also not a member of the Adult Children Of Divorce.  So, I really don’t know what that whole thing is like, even though growing up I’ve had friends and dated women that have had divorced parents.  I’ve only witnessed things as an outsider, so I’m not gonna tackle this review pointing out the accuracies and inaccuracies of the topic at hand.  Why?  I’m not the expert and I’m not gonna act like I am.  The stuff in the film seemed real enough to me, but I can’t weigh in on experience.  I suppose my experience in life is more closer to Lauren in the film’s, but my parents and grandparents have never celebrated really odd numbered anniversary dates. An Exclusive Clip Premiere From ‘Knights of Badassdom’

Knights of BadassdomWow!  You don’t know how long I’ve been patiently waiting for Knights of Badassdom to be released!  I first met Joe Lynch at the premiere of Chillerama at Comic-Con 2011 along with his cohorts Adam Green and Tim Sullivan.  The very next day I talked to the man again at the press only conference for this film.  Some two years later the film has yet to be released.  Just when I was about to give up, late last year, word broke of its eventual release in 2014.  However, I do hear rumors sadly that it’s not the cut Joe Lynch had in mind.  Nevertheless, I am looking forward to some serious LARP action with Peter Dinklage and Ryan Kwanten.  The film will be made available via TUGG on January 21, 2014 and on VOD February 11, 2014.  So while you wait for those dates, why don’t you check out a special clip released online today along with the flick’s synopsis and poster.  Enjoy! We Are What We Are (Blu-ray Review)

Are you hungry?  I hope so because the Parker family would love to have you over for dinner.  However, let me provide a word to the wise.  If you are squeamish at all when it comes to gory moments in horror films, make sure you fill your belly first before viewing We Are What We Are as it may be awhile before you eat again, particularly red meat.  Honest to God, I have not taken in a single piece of red meat since viewing this feature On Demand several weeks ago.  I suppose I’ll be healthier for it, but this movie conjures a lot of memories in my mind every time I see a silver cooking pot, a soup bowl or a hunk of beef.  So maybe I should be thanking the filmmakers here for making me a healthier eater, huh?  I suppose I should, but I digress.  So today, without further ado, we are here to talk about one hell of a shocking horror film finally making waves on the Blu-ray format after being available On Demand and digitally for weeks now.  Ladies and gentlemen…We Are What We Are or as I like to call “We Are What We Eat.” Continue reading ‘We Are What We Are (Blu-ray Review)’

Sorcerer Makes Its Long Awaited Debut On Blu-ray April 22nd!

SorcererGet the Top 10 Blu-rays of 2014 lists ready, we’ve got a potential suitor.  William Friedkin’s kind of “lost” film Sorcerer is making the leap to Blu-ray.  The film is one that wasn’t very well received upon released, but in the previous year has been gaining steam and has been reevaluated as an unappreciated gem.  I think its exciting when there’s some secret or newly discovered piece of any legendary director’s history.  This will be getting a 4K restoration treatment.  If its anything like the restoration for The Exorcist and the 2nd iteration of The French Connection, we’re in for a real treat here.   For many it will be like watching the film with fresh new eyes for the very first time.  There’s been an excitement building for it for years as Friedkin struggled to find who had the rights to the film and then went through the courts to get those rights back.  Now, he’s got it and he’s overseeing the whole thing.  Hopefully if this does well, maybe we’ll see that Cruising movie of his on Blu-ray that I put as a part of my wishlist last year. V-Wars - www.whysoblu.comHot off the success of the shared-world vampire prose anthology,V-Wars, IDW and New York Times best-selling and multiple Bram Stoker award-winning horror author,Jonathan Maberry conspire once again to continue the battle that rages between humans and vampires in the all-new ongoing comic book series coming this May. V-Wars is set in a world transformed by a global pandemic caused by a millennial-old virus that, once triggered, affects individuals differently depending on their DNA.  The result is vampires as unique as their cultures and a response from those unaffected humans like never seen before. “The vampires people used to believe in weren’t charming romantic antiheroes. They were monsters,” says writer Maberry. “Each culture had their own legends, and each of these vampires was completely different from the others; and all of them were different from the vampires in pop-culture. We went directly to the source: the myths and legends of vampires around the world and throughout history.
