The brilliant Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) “establishes a claim to be the best comic filmmaker now working” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times) as Third World ruler Admiral General Aladeen in the “outrageously funny” (Rafer Guzman, Newsday) comedy THE DICTATOR, reigning supreme in an all-new Banned* & Unrated version debuting August 21, 2012 on Blu-ray with a Digital Copy, DVD (both with UltraViolet ™), On Demand and for Digital Download from Paramount Home Media Distribution. The hysterical tale of an inept despot’s first trip to America, THE DICTATOR “starts at outrageous and rockets on from there” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) as the leader of Wadiya is stripped of power and suddenly forced to live his ultimate nightmare…the American dream. THE DICTATOR features an outstanding comedic ensemble including Anna Faris (Scary Movie), Ben Kingsley (Hugo), Jason Mantzoukas (“The League”), Chris Parnell (“30 Rock”), Bobby Lee (“MADtv”) and Jessica St. Clair (Bridesmaids). “My film is funnier than equal rights for women, as gut-busting as a UN resolution and more hilarious than watching a student set himself on fire. Owning a copy of my glorious and award-winning** film will give you more pleasure than having Halle Berry rub almond oil into your buttocks while you stimulate her bint al-sahn with your mashloof…and it will cost you considerably less money,” said Admiral General Aladeen. “Although my film was subjected to the infamous authoritarian censorship of the West, thanks to Blu-ray and DVD you can finally see all the really naughty bits. I have your home address, so trust me, you WILL love it.” Continue reading ‘The Dictator: Banned and Unrated on Blu-ray August 21st’

When Oscar time came around there was much buzz about a film with a peculiar name called Bullhead. It was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, but lost to something else that I can’t remember. Soon after the Oscar nomination, or was it during, nevermind, an amazing poster was created by the folks over at Mondo (pictured below for the dual Blu-ray cover art) a man that looked to be part bull. It’s an awesome design, by the way. Well, these posters sold out instantly, so there was that buzz that it had going for it. Next up was me watching the trailer and thinking that it was a Fight Club knock-off of some kind. Man, was I ever wrong. I’m going to go ahead and say it right now: Bullhead is a masterpiece of a film. It may be a masterpiece, but will the Blu-ray live up to the film itself? Keep reading. Back in the director’s chair (naturally) is the great Werner Herzog, flying high after his last critical hit, The Cave of Forgotten Dreams. This time out, Werner Herzog tackles the subject of the death penalty. Wow, Herzog, the death penalty, and existential cinema collide? I’m there! One has to go into something like Into the Abyss with an open mind due to the subject matter at hand and check any preconceived notions at the door. Will we choose sides, will we remain locked in neutral? It’s good to know that we have Captain Herzog at the wheel, but depending on what you may think of his past works, is that necessarily a good thing? Keep reading after the jump to find out. I’m all for a good love story or two especially when they’re of the unconventional kind. Certified Copy comes to us from famed Iranian filmmaker (and jack of all trades) Abbas Kiarostami. The film stars the very lovely and talented Juliette Binoche (The English Patient, Chocolat) and baritone opera singer, in his big screen debut, William Shimell. The Criterion Collection has seen fit to bring out all the stops with regards to the Blu-ray; it even features one of Abbas Kiarostami’s forgotten films, in its entirety, as part of the supplements package. Seriously, when one of the special features is a feature length film, you’ve already gotten a great start. Let us see if Certified Copy makes the grade. Here’s a surprise of a film I was surprised to see get a Blu-ray release. It’s the 1968 sci-fi romp, Barbarella, starring Jane Fonda. Yes, that Jane Fonda. I believe this is the film that forever made her a sex symbol. It’s the film that focused on Fonda primarily, and kept her politics and personal viewpoints in the back burner. Keep in mind that the weird title of “Queen of the Galaxy” is only used for the cover art, but absent in the main feature. It’s almost an afterthought used in the marketing. The film is also rated PG, but by today’s standards, this would most likely garner a PG-13 or R. Still, the rating is harmless, but this is more of an “adult” themed sci-fi tale. If you’re okay with that, then I’m okay with you reading on to see if the Blu-ray is a worthy addition to your collection. Excelsior! Continue reading ‘Barbarella (Blu-ray Review)’

Oh boy, I sound like a teenage female fan whooping and hollering for my favorite band to get up on that stage and rock my socks off. Well, I’m neither a female, and I’m only sort of whooping and hollering, because guys don’t tend to whoop and holler. Or do they? You see, I just finished listening to Lit’s album of brand new recorded material in eight years, which is a milestone unto itself. If you know me personally you know that I’ve been a fan of the band for a long time. Hey, I don’t just grow banded goatees for nothing. There’s a purpose behind it, but that’s another story altogether. It’s just really great to have the guys back in the saddle again after many years on the down low. Not that they were ever gone, but new material would not be forthcoming until now. It’s time to review The View From the Bottom, so grab your drink of choice, sit back, and enjoy yourselves. Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and novelist Chuck Hogan bring their New York Times best-selling series of novels, the Strain Trilogy, to Dark Horse Comics with an ongoing adventure that takes a terrifying spin on the vampire genre. Renowned comics creator David Lapham (Stray Bullets, Silverfish) and artist Mike Huddleston (The Coffin, Butcher Baker) join forces in this comic book adaptation unlike any other—bringing del Toro and Hogan’s vision to life in a story that casts a deadly plague over the whole of humanity. The Strain Volume 1, collecting issues #1–#6 of this ongoing series, is a horror story unlike any other! When a Boeing 777 lands at JFK International Airport and goes dark on the runway, the Centers for Disease Control, fearing a terrorist attack, calls in Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and his team of expert biological-threat first responders. Only an elderly pawnbroker from Spanish Harlem suspects a darker purpose behind the event—an ancient threat intent on covering mankind in darkness. I’d been really interested in seeing The Innkeepers when I heard about the project and it being Ti West’s follow up to the excellent The House of the Devil. Spooky New England hotels, ghosts, demons, people crapping themselves in hotels where ghosts and demons live? Hell yeah! I should also make mention that I had already seen the film on VOD a couple of months (or weeks) before the Blu-ray, so I already knew what I was getting myself into. The question still remains: Did I like the film before AND after? The Blu-ray contains a couple of extras that the bare-bones VOD version did not. Maybe that will sweeten the deal a bit more? Read on and find out. Continue reading ‘The Innkeepers (Blu-ray Review)’

If at first you don’t succeed try again, right? Wait a minute, the first Ghost Rider film grossed almost 230 million dollars worldwide, what do you mean try again? It was a box-office success even though it was garbage. Well, there are forces out there that deemed there be a sequel to the film, or in this case, a re-boot, so there you go. Honestly, I didn’t even know this film was a re-boot, because if you watch it all the way through it plays fine as a sequel. Anyways, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance are directing duo madmen Neveldine/Taylor’s (Crank, Crank 2, Gamer) latest project and first foray into directing-for-hire features. How has the demon biker with flame, skull, and a motorcycle on fire fare this time out? Will it ride off into the darkness as it should or will its flame be extinguished early on?
