A place to sit is a much sought after item in the large Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center. The reason for this is due to the fact that this hallowed hall is where all the big budget films introduce their cast and trailers. Saturday saw the likes of some highly anticipated titles making their debut, at least in teaser form, to the capacity crowd of 6,500. Just to give you an idea of how hot of a commodity a seat is in that room, we arrived at the convention center to line up at 7:30 am. Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2010: Day 3 Hall H Recap’

One of the greatest things about attending Comic-Con is the sneak peak attendees have access to; from everything like movies to publications, the grand event houses several of these opportunities. During a recent discussion panel with Image’s Robert Kirkman, the creative force introduced the new comic book label, Skybound, which falls under the realm of Image Comics. One of the first titles under this fresh new imprint is a very unique story titled Witch Doctor. Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2010: Witch Doctor from Skybound / Image Comics’

Comic-Con fans packed Room 6BCF on Friday to get a glimpse of the hottest show on premium cable. Move over True Blood… I’m talking Spartacus: Blood and Sand! We were gathered there that day to celebrate three things: everything Spartacus and their success, the upcoming 6-part prequel miniseries and most importantly, Andy Whitfield’s defeat of cancer. It was like being in the gladiator arena audience. The crowd was rowdy as can be. And I truly loved every minute of this panel! Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2010: Spartacus’

It was nearly 30 years ago when Disney released a science fiction film that altered the landscape of special effects. Known simply as Tron, the film included the likes of the now Oscar winner Jeff Bridges. The story was simple; a guy gets warped into a computer and has to find his way out. Little does he know that perils await at every turn as a fully functional dictatorship exists in the virtual landscape. Donned in CCM hockey helmets and futuristic uniforms accented with white tape, the film’s crew used this combination along with a creative lighting effect to give a luminescence to the actors and the world in which they roam. This was a very pleasant surprise yesterday… fo sho! While scavenging the streets of San Diego for some quick chow we stumbled upon a block party where Robert Rodriguez was screening some exclusive footage from his upcoming grindhouse film, Machete. Add even better… free tacos were being handed out to the crowd! I’m just exaggerating… there’s nothing better than Robert Rodriguez, but there were free tacos. While we were not able to talk with Mr. Rodriguez, we did snap some great pictures of the infamous director and also of Michelle. Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2010: Robert Rodriguez’s Machete’

I’m an unabashed Sylvester Stallone fan especially when it comes to the Rocky and Rambo movies. Back in the 80s he was in top form but towards the end of the decade, I noticed the quality of his movies were starting to go down starting with Cobra and then continuing on with movies like Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot! Lock Up falls squarely in that period but fares a little better than a lot of those. It seems like Stallone was getting restless and most likely felt typecast and was trying as many different genres as possible. Continue reading ‘Lock Up (Blu-ray Review)’

Welcome to the first of many updates from Comic-Con’s Hall H. Today’s first update begins with a little spy film that opened last night, Salt. It’s not every day that you get to be in the same room as Angelina Jolie. Angelina, joined by fellow co-star Liev Schreiber and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura took the Hall H stage at 1 PM on Thursday, July 22nd. There really is no easy way to do this so I’m just kind of going with a free-for-all format below. Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2010: Angelina Jolie & Salt’

I think most people have at some point wondered “what if” whether it’s about a girl or boy in your past or a decision you made long ago that still keeps you awake at night on occasion. I think if everyone (myself included) were given the opportunity to find out how things could have been different knowing what they know now, they would jump at the chance if they had access to let’s say a GMC Delorean or in this case a Hot Tub Time Machine. Let the Con begin! Staff members from Why So Blu have descended upon the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con. For the inundated, Comic-Con is not simply a fanboy event to get all oogly-googly over Spider-Man and Wonder Woman. Ohhh no, my friends. It is so much more than that. It has become one of the largest launch pads in the world for film, alternative press, collectibles, gaming, television…you name it. With Wednesday the 21st being Preview Night, a few of us had the opportunity to watch the premiere of the CW Network’s Nikita, courtesy of Warner Bros. Studios. After recently suffering through the original 1981 Clash of the Titans on Blu-ray (see review here), my apprehension towards this 2010 remake was quickly relinquished after only the first ten minutes into my theatrical press screening. I was pleasantly surprised, instantly enchanted and obsessively engrossed within the mythical fantasy world brought to life using the latest and greatest in CGI technology as opposed to that 1981 film I could now produce using miniatures in my garage. All right. Let’s be fair. The 1981 rendition was good in 1981. But c’mon… It’s 2010! Continue reading ‘Clash of the Titans – 2010 (Blu-ray Review)’

I just so happened to miss this one during its brief stint in the theaters this year so I was overjoyed to find out that Sony would be providing me with a Blu-ray review copy of The Runaways. However, I will let you in on a little secret. Do you want to know the real reason why I wanted to see The Runaways so badly? Well, even if you don’t, you know me; I’m going to tell you. It’s because I wanted to check out one of my favorite actresses, Scout Taylor-Compton, and see how she is doing. Continue reading ‘The Runaways (Blu-ray Review)’

I can already feel the masses getting their torches and pitchforks ready for me on this one. Is this my Avatar of 2010? What I’m getting at is last year I was the lone wolf here on Why So Blu, ultimately not impressed by Avatar like the rest of the world was. Not quite getting the fanfare of the blue aliens, Christopher Nolan’s Inception has still garnered a significant amount of ooh’s and ah’s from a public that waits with anticipation to see this film. I was one of those people representing the eager public. Continue reading ‘Inception Mind-Numbing, Not Mind-Blowing’

I am no longer a Gaga concert virgin. The controversial pop superstar recently arrived in Cleveland, Ohio for her July 14th performance along with a talented and sizable ensemble woven into the Monster Ball Tour. First things first; this was not a concert. Lady Gaga’s performance is an experience to the Nth degree on so many levels. If anyone out there is having any thoughts on attending one of the dates on her tour, let me say this…if in-your-face sexuality bothers you, stay away.
