Filth To Ashes Flesh To Dust (Movie Review)

Hello boils and ghouls, it’s time for our movie review for a film that you may not have heard of until recently…and by recently I mean this last weekend.  It had the #39 rank in terms of box office receipts and an awesome $7,826 per theater average.  Did I mention it only opened on 11 screens?  Yep, that’s pretty damn impressive by Hollywood or non-Hollywood standards, and this weekend is almost getting started!  Oh, but you want to know how the movie is, right?  Follow me.  Continue reading ‘Filth To Ashes Flesh To Dust (Movie Review)’

A Guy Thing (Blu-ray Review)

Wow, time for a flashback of a review with A Guy Thing. I honestly thought A Guy Thing was only a couple of years old, but when I looked at the back cover it said 2003 – which means it was probably in production in 2002, and next year will be 2012 which make it a nearly ten year old film!  Sorry, the logistics are fascinating to me.  Jason Lee (Mallrats, My Name Is Earl), Julia Stiles (The Bourne Trilogy), and Selma Blair (Hellboy, Hellboy II) are cool people that I happen to like which did not make me dread watching the Blu-ray of the film.  I do remember laughing at the trailer all those years ago, so here was hoping that the Blu-ray would rock.  Did it rock or did it suck?  Let’s do it!  Continue reading ‘A Guy Thing (Blu-ray Review)’

Airplane! (Blu-ray Review)

It’s safe to say…no, it’s safe to INSIST that Airplane! was the first of the satire-spoofs to hit film more than thirty years ago.  At long last the original spoof-satire has arrived on the Blu-ray format.  Are you tired of those movies that have “movie” in the title?  It would appear that the makers of those movies need to see how it was originally done by the creators of one of the best, if not, the best of the spoof films.  You can probably tell where I will be going with my review, but rest assured I will be fair in my evaluation of the film and Blu-ray.  Please keep in mind that Airplane! is a Best Buy EXCLUSIVE, so you can only purchase the film at your nearest Best Buy or at www.bestbuy.com for the time being.  Continue reading ‘Airplane! The Clowns (Blu-ray Review)

Normally I would take this first paragraph of space to kind of tease the following Blu-ray, but after having just witnessed something touching and truly extraordinary I’ll let Federico Fellini do some of the talking:  Others have commented on the circus.  It’s an inflated framework, drowned with literary allusions.  Yet, despite it all, it does exist, re-introducing itself as a precise nucleus: a dimension and an authentic atmosphere that is not possible to archive, that is not covered in dust, because that life-style and the way of portraying itself include, in an exemplary way, some long-lasting myths: the adventure, the journey, the risk, the chance, the rush, the presence in the spotlight…  – Federico Fellini Continue reading ‘The Clowns (Blu-ray Review)’

Hannibal (Blu-ray Review)

Wrapping up the 90’s, 1999, to be exact, author Thomas Harris decided to continue his Hannibal Lecter tale with the sequel to Silence of the Lambs with Hannibal. This caused quite a stir in Hollywood, and rights were snatched up, with production to begin for the film version of Hannibal as soon as possible.  The great Ridley Scott would direct, but would any of the previous cast members return?  We know what ended up happening, so with that out of the way let us see how Hannibal on Blu-ray stacks up.  Continue reading ‘Hannibal (Blu-ray Review)’

‘Night Train Murders’ Coming to Blu-ray January 31, 2012

It was released as SECOND HOUSE ON THE LEFT, NEW HOUSE ON THE LEFT, and TORTURE TRAIN. The ads screamed, “Most movies last less than two hours! This is one of everlasting torment!”  It remains one of the most graphically fiendish films in exploitation history, the story of two teenage girls traveling through Europe, forced into a nightmare of sexual assault and sadistic violence.  Irene Miracle (INFERNO, MIDNIGHT EXPRESS), Flavio Bucci (SUSPIRIA), Macha Meril (DEEP RED), and Marina Berti (WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOUR DAUGHTERS?) star in this depraved shocker directed by Aldo Lado (SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS, WHO SAW HER DIE?) and featuring a haunting score by Ennio Morricone (THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE).  Experience evil gone off the rails: NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS is now presented in a brand-new High Definition transfer from the original uncensored negative!  Continue reading ‘‘Night Train Murders’ Coming to Blu-ray January 31, 2012′

If you’re not familiar with Ms. Taymor then let me reacquaint you with her style.  She had previously written and directed Titus, Frida, and Across the Universe.  The Tempest marks her fourth film, and her second feature film based on a William Shakespeare play.  For those that are not familiar with her past feature works she was also responsible for the Lion King musical and the director of Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark.  She left Spiderman due to creative differences, though.  Let’s find out how The Tempest on Blu-ray scored, shall we.  Continue reading ‘The Tempest (Blu-ray Review)’

How To Make It In America: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray Review)

“From the creators of Entourage…” Okay, I’m in!  Yes, I’m shallow, but you love it.  I got the word that I would be reviewing How To Make It In America, and got real excited.  Granted the title is a bit peculiar due to having the Entourage cloud hanging over it.  People may start talking and assuming that How To Make It In America will be Entourage’s successor, or something like that.  I am happy to report that that is absolutely 100% NOT TRUE.  How To Make It In America is one of the newest shows on HBO, and if past programming is any indication, this new show will be of the highest quality with regards to story, budget, and all of those things.  Right about now you’re probably wondering if How To Make In America is any good, right?  Then take my hand.   Continue reading ‘How To Make It In America: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray Review)’

Manhunter (Blu-ray Review)

Years before Hannibal Lector was to grace us in three (four, if you include Hannibal Rising), Michael Mann had already introduced us to the Lecter-verse.  That film was called Manhunter. Most people didn’t even realize that, including yours truly, mainly due to the fact that Hannibal Lecter was not played by Anthony Hopkins in Mann’s version.  Brian Cox was the original, and some say the best, Hannibal Lecter.  Is that true?  I’ll let you know what I think of the film and this Blu-ray release, so come with me into the darkness that is Manhunter.   Continue reading ‘Manhunter (Blu-ray Review)’

Rounders (Blu-ray Review)

Wow, looks like it’s time to party like it’s 1999, I mean 1998, up in here!  Time really flies when you’re having fun.  It seems like yesterday when I was watching these two up-and-comers tackle the screen with an industry veteran.  The newbies were Matt Damon and some kid named Edward Norton.  The veteran was some badass named John Malkovich.  Honorable mentions go out to that fine piece of exquisiteness known as Famke Janssen and muchos props to John Turturro, Gretchen Mol, and Martin Landau for “rounding” up a pretty impressive cast in a most low-key film.  Cool, let’s hit it.  Continue reading ‘Rounders (Blu-ray Review)’

Powerman 5000 – Copies, Clones and Replicants (CD Review)

I was surfing Amazon.com for some random stuff to buy when lo-and-behold I ran into one of my favorite band’s latest musical offerings.  Powerman 5000 just released a cover album of tunes, and I didn’t even know about it.  How could this happen?  I’m usually in the loop.  I proceeded to quickly scoop up a copy and have been jamming out the last few days with the latest tunes.  That was also the catalyst for me to write this review.  Considering the band had just released a full length album not even two years ago, how does Copies, Clones and Replicants measure up to their past releases.  Come with me to Somewhere On The Other Side Of Nowhere and find out.  😉   Continue reading ‘Powerman 5000 – Copies, Clones and Replicants (CD Review)’
