All good things come to those who wait. That’s what they say, right? Well, I’ve been patiently waiting for my favorite director of all time to make a full feature film for about ten years now and here we are ten years later with the master of horror’s newest feature film entitled The Ward. After a couple of false starts, mainly due to an overseas error on the import Blu-ray release, we were subjected to a Fall delay. Then the flood gates opened up and a domestic distributor stepped up and took charge. John Carpenter’s The Ward had it’s VOD premiere last month (or two) along with a limited theatrical release across the United States, before finally being released on the might Blu-ray format. All of this within a 2-3 month time span. I could not be happier. So how was the movie? How was the Blu-ray? Grab some adult diapers and enter if you dare. John Carpenter’s The Ward is now admitting. When Beavis and Butt-Head first appeared on MTV in 1993, critics railed against the idiocy of two idle teens who did little more than watch TV and make snide comments. The true story of Norway’s biggest traitor gets a hilarious and thrilling reimagining in the no-holds-barred NORWEGIAN NINJA. Created by the producers of the Norwegian cult hit Dead Snow, about Nazi zombies, the movie will thrill both ninja action fans and (alternative) history buffs when Dark Sky Films releases it on DVD, via MPI Media Group, on August 30, 2011. The disc has an SRP of $24.98. In 1984, high-ranking Norwegian diplomat Arne Treholt was tried and convicted of acting as a spy on behalf of the Soviet Union. But what if the courts got it wrong? What if the case against him was a sham? What if – dare we consider – Treholt was not a spy at all but a patriot of the highest order and the leader of a secret ninja force created by King Olav? A ninja force locked in a secret battle against all who would challenge Norwegian sovereignty? Continue reading ‘‘Norwegian Ninja’ comes to DVD on August 30th’

Eagle Rock Entertainment has brought forth one of their latest music releases on the Blu-ray format. This Blu-ray release is entitled Deep Purple: Phoenix Rising. This line-up would affectionately be called the Mark III line-up. Coverdale – Hughes – Bolin – Paice – Lord. Yep, who would have thought that the singer for Whitesnake would have started his career out with an already legendary band like Deep Purple? It’s true. This is a unique Blu-ray release in that it is more of a documentary on the Mark III line-up , but features very little in the way of performances. It’s a hybrid of sorts. How did it turn out? Tickets please! Continue reading ‘Deep Purple: Phoenix Rising (Blu-ray Review)’

I remember seeing a trailer for The Warrior’s Way not too long ago and was not very impressed by what I saw. I don’t know if it was the mood I was in, or if it was the attitude of, “not another one of these Hong Kong imports,” etc. I did see some familiar faces in it like Kate Bosworth, Geoffrey Rush, and Danny Huston. I also saw an unfamiliar face in that of Jang Dong Gun. Who? That’s what I said. It also dawned on me that the film was also being sold on the backs of the primary American cast. Hey, it’s business. I’m sure they sold it the other way around in Asia. Once I got word that I was going to review the Blu-ray I got kind of excited. I tried not to read to much on the film itself, because I wanted to be surprised. Did the film succeed in keeping me entertained? Was it any good in general? All these questions shall be answered in our Blu-ray review for The Warrior’s Way. Continue reading ‘The Warrior’s Way (Blu-ray Review)’

Ah, it’s been a long time coming with our next review. Fresh off our trip to Comic-Con 2011 in San Diego, California, one of my real purposes of going was to snag me a copy of the Full Moon Entertainment production of Subspecies featuring one of my favorite vampire incarnations of all time: Radu. It had to be mine. This Blu-ray release marks the 20th anniversary of Subspecies and the first time (I believe) on DVD and Blu-ray in general. Full Moon Entertainment was in the business of producing direct-to-video features shot in Romania, Bucharest, and parts of Eastern Europe. This always lent a bit of weight in their productions due to the filming locations used. Having not seen the original Subspecies film since my early VHS days back in the early 90’s, how will it stack up against today’s more modern counterparts? Read and see. Ken Burns’s and Lynn Novick’s engaging, entertaining and enlightening documentary about the rise and fall of the 18th Amendment debuts on Blu-ray and DVD when PROHIBITION arrives on October 4, 2011 from PBS Home Video and Paramount Home Entertainment. A fascinating story that goes beyond the oft-told tales of gangsters, rum runners, flappers and speakeasies to raise profound questions about the proper role of government, individual rights and responsibilities, PROHIBITION delves deep into how a society founded on individual freedom became a nation of scofflaws and hypocrites. Told through expert interviews, vintage footage and compelling images, the five-and-a-half hour film explores how the enshrining of a faith-driven moral code in the Constitution paradoxically caused millions of Americans to rethink their definition of morality.
