Cold Fish (DVD Review)

Of late, I have developed quite the interest in Asian cinema.  Oh, sure, I’d dabbled before– I’ve got more than a few Miike films on my shelf, for instance– but lately I’ve been going bananas with our friends to the East (note: “Friends to The East” does not include Kim Jong-Il, just in case anyone’s concerned about my political affiliations).  It started with me revisiting Old Boy, and quickly turned into me buying up a slew of Asian Blu-rays over the past few weeks: The Good, The Bad, and The Weird and The Host and I Saw The Devil and — of course– House.  And so, when the opportunity to review the Asian horror film Cold Fish arose, I gladly accepted.  Unlike another, American-made horror film released under the “Bloody Disgusting Selects” banner that I just reviewed (YellowBrickRoad), this one was actually pretty damn good.  Let’s get to it.  Continue reading ‘Cold Fish (DVD Review)’

YellowBrickRoad (DVD Review)

Apparently, BloodyDisgusting.com — the awesome website for horror aficionados, gore hounds, and scary-movie enthusiasts– has gotten into the film distribution game.  Y’know, one of those things where a company tracks down a series of little seen movies and slaps its logo (in this case, Bloody Disgusting’s not-entirely-iconic “skull with a buzzsaw blade in it”, which looks dangerously similar to Wilson from Cast Away to me) on the upper-lefthand corner of the cover box?  Well, I got a good look at two of Bloody Disgusting’s films this week, one of which was terrible…the other of which was pretty damn awesome.  Which was YellowBrickRoad?  Keep on reading to find out, folks…  Continue reading ‘YellowBrickRoad (DVD Review)’

Sister Wives 2 (DVD Review)

I just celebrated my 10th wedding anniversary and for the past 10 years, I’ve been joking that my husband and I need to get an extra wife.  Get your head out of the gutter; I’m not talking about becoming swingers and inviting others into our bedroom.  I’m talking about the rest of married life.  My husband and I both work full time, and we could use a stay at home mom to take care of our son, cook our dinner, clean our house, etc.  I actually don’t care which wife I am.  I can be the working wife or the stay at home wife.  As long as I don’t have to do both, I would be happy.  Turns out, I’m not the first person to think of this as the Mormons thought of polygamy a long time ago.  And wouldn’t you know it, TLC made a reality show about it, specifically the Brown Family.  As the DVD begins to play I realize that there are endless possibilities for reality shows – especially after watching a preview for something called Punkin Chunkin, which I may watch just because I love the title. Storage Wars Season One (DVD Review)

When Southern California storage unit bills go unpaid, the contents go up for auction.  Storage Wars is a reality show on A&E that follows four professional buyers and their teams as they gamble that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.  When the lock on the unit is cut, they have five minutes to look without entering or touching any of the units contents.  Then an auctioneer takes the bids.  Sometimes they bid because they think they have spotted something worthwhile, sometimes they bid each other up, and sometimes they bid just so another guy can’t have it.  Storage Wars is as much about the bidders as it is the stuff they find and by the end of season one, you will definitely find you have favorites. Norwegian Ninja (DVD Review)

Having Norwegian Ninja arrive for me to review was a surprise, because the only thing I’d really heard or seen of the film was one single trailer with English subtitles.  The trailer looked hilarious.  Why?  It’s in the title!  Norwegian Ninja!  How could I not be impressed with it?  The trailer looked like an extremely low budget flick with crappy production values.  I was so in!  Then the DVD copy arrived and I was…even more in?  Yep, Why So Blu is proud to present (wait for it) the DVD review of…NORWEGIAN NINJA!!!!   Continue reading ‘Norwegian Ninja (DVD Review)’

Collecting the first twelve episodes from the show’s second season, the two-disc Batman: The Brave and The Bold Season Two, Part One DVD collection is the latest home video release for the acclaimed Batman: The Brave and The Bold animated series. The show has benefited from some great guest stars including: Morena Baccarin, Xander Berkeley, Clancy Brown, Jeffrey Combs, Tim Conway, Olivia d’Abo, Dana Delany, Michael Dorn, Ioan Gruffudd, Neil Patrick Harris, Tippi Hedren, John Michael Higgins, Carl Lumbly, Stephen Root, Ron Perlman and a ton more!  The highlights for me were the returning fan favorite Batman: The Animated Series regulars Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill. Midnight Movie: The Killer Cut (DVD Review)

When you think about it, horror movies are a lot like the hamburgers you get at McDonald’s.  McDonald’s seems to have no qualms about the fact that just about everyone agrees their food sucks, mainly because people continue consuming it.  They take the cheapest, weakest ingredients and mash ’em together to create a product that– while hungover or drunk– might seem like a good idea, but one that loses a lot of its appeal once the booze wears off and common sense kicks in.  Similarly, studios have always treated horror films as a dirty little (not-so-secret) secret, churning out titles (all of which are destined to end up cluttering the clearance bin at Wal-Mart) with alarming rapidity simply because they know that the ill-informed, the drunk, and the hungover will always have an appetite for them.  Whereas McDonald’s “cheap ingredients” might include grade-D beef and more than a little rat feces, studios’ “cheap ingredients” include grade-D actors and…well, more than a little rat feces.  All of this is a very longwinded– and entirely unnecessary– was of getting to this:  when you’re trolling the bargain bins and bottom-shelves of the world, you never know what you’re gonna get.   Continue reading ‘Midnight Movie: The Killer Cut (DVD Review)’

Jersey Shore: Season 3 Uncensored (DVD Review)

Ahh, the famed Jersey Shore. Easily one of the most popular reality TV shows of all time…and I had never watched an episode until this collection came across my desk. I’m well aware of its popularity and even know a few peeps who have an addiction to the show. So, how does this compare to past seasons? I can’t answer that. How does this season stand up in regard to pure entertainment factor? Keep on scrolling, kids…

Man v. Food Season 3 (DVD Review)

Adam Richman and his seemingly bottomless stomach conquer food challenges across America. Get ready to watch Adam defeat the most monstrous food challenges to date.  The five pound grilled cheese challenge at Melt Bar &Grille in Cleveland, Ohio and the insanely spicy ludicrous wing challenge at Chicken or the Egg in the Jersey Shore, and a lot more.  I have a friend named Drew Maguire who would have been perfect for this type of show, since he’s never sat down to a meal he didn’t finish, regardless of the portion size, spiciness or time frame in which he was required to finish.   Watching him eat over the years definitely prepared me for this show so it’s no surprise that I enjoyed watching this.

World War I in Color (DVD Review)

World War I claimed the lives of 10 million soldiers and shaped an entire century. Narrated by four-time Academy Award nominee Kenneth Branagh, this extraordinary documentary brings the war’s horror and heroism to life in a way never before revealed. Rare archival film—meticulously colorized under the guidance of expert historians—makes the past fresh, relevant, and alive.  In addition to these newly reclaimed sights and sounds, surviving WWI veterans share their experiences, personally testifying about life in the trenches, the terror of “going over the top,” and the courage and sacrifice of battle.  Analysis by military historians, detailed maps, and excerpts from the diaries and letters of men and women in the struggle offer a full range of perspectives on this unimaginably brutal, bloody clash of empires. Transformers – Headmasters (DVD Review)

Transformers – Headmasters represents the missing link in the Transformer mythology for American audiences since the show only aired in Japan.  The toy-line was made by the company Takara, were originally known as the Diaclone and Microman’s Micro Change toy-lines, which were re-branded as “Transformers” by Hasbro when the toys were brought to the U.S. market.   Takara imported the original series to sell their toys until they felt they could do it on their own and created their own series known as Transformers – Headmasters which took place after the events of Generation 1 (More Than Meets the Eye) that aired in America.  While most of the continuity from the original show was retained, there were some differences between the two such as how the Headmasters were created. Billy The Exterminator – Season 3 (DVD Review)

I am terrified of bugs and all things of the creepy crawly variety.  In addition I have a completely irrational fear of flying things (especially bees), particularly those small enough to fly into my ear canal.  A quick google search reveals that my abnormal and persistent fear of insects is called entomophobia. As a life long entomophobe, the fact that I am a loyal viewer of Billy the Exterminator just goes to show you how entertaining Billy Bretherton and family can be.  I watch every single episode – event the ones with spiders and cockroaches confident in the knowledge that those scurrying little devils will soon meet their maker when Vexcon is called. Leverage Season 3 (DVD Review)

We’ve got more television antics to bring you here on Why So Blu.  On deck we have Leverage The 3rd Season on DVD.  This is the complete 3rd season of the hit television show which airs weekly on TNT.  Again, as with Being Human I was thrown into the review mix without knowing what the show would be about, so I had to go back into the Netflix queue and request the first two seasons on DVD to better acquaint myself with Leverage. The other buzzwords that I was hearing prior to watching Leverage was that it was an American remake of the British television show Hu$tle. I adore that show.  There was only one way to find out and that was by tackling the Leverage series all at once.  Here’s our review for Leverage The 3rd Season.  Enjoy.   Continue reading ‘Leverage Season 3 (DVD Review)’

Dog the Bounty Hunter – This Family Means Business (DVD Review)

Until now, I’d never actually seen a full episode of Dog the Bounty Hunter. I get sucked in by most reality shows, good and bad – so I thought I’d give this one a try.  I don’t know if I’m proud or ashamed to say that I enjoyed it quite a bit.  With only six episodes on this DVD, it certainly left me wanting more.  By the end of the second episode I began to think of Dog, his wife Beth, and the rest of the crew as my extended family.  The gang of bounty hunters is often loud and obnoxious (especially Beth) but I love them anyway.  The criminals are also pretty entertaining.  Fans of the show COPS who enjoyed watching stupid people get arrested will enjoy Dog the Bounty Hunter in the same way.  If  A&E ever manages a cross-over between my other favorite trashy reality show (Billy the Exterminator) I will be in heaven.  Maybe Dog and Billy could hunt down some animal poachers together! The Elephant DVD With Eric Herman (DVD Review)

The back of the DVD tells me that Eric Herman is an award winning kids’ music star.  To be honest, I am not at all familiar with him but I knew one of his videos was featured in the movie Life As We Know It. I also should admit that although I loved Life As We Know It, I do not remember seeing the video in the movie but I assumed someone involved in making the movie probably thought it was pretty special.  As the mother of a three year old, I am always looking for new things to watch with my son as he doesn’t seem to need much of a variety.  My goal is to find something for him to watch that he loves and I am willing to tolerate.  Usually, I am pretty happy when I find something he will sit still through.  The Elephant DVD kept him still and content so it wasn’t a bad ninety minutes. Savage County (DVD Review)

Here we are again with some more horror material to hopefully satiate your horror-film palette.  Savage County is a DVD release from the FilmBuff Company and MTV New Media.  In essence, this is more DTV  (direct-to-video) programming on a low budget scale.  The question remains as to whether it’s any good or not.  Savage County was made on  a $250,000 budget which by all intents and purposes is a lot of money.  How does it compare to the many horror movies out there that share similar themes and storylines?  Get ready to cross township lines and enter Savage County on DVD courtesy of Why So Blu.   Continue reading ‘Savage County (DVD Review)’
