Rebellion, the same company that brought us the very successful PC version of the game over a decade ago, is back with their 21st century overhaul. And the award goes to…okay, we’re not the Oscars, but as 2009 comes to a close, it’s about time to acknowledge Why So Blu’s inaugural Game of the Year award. There have been an impressive array of titles that hit store shelves this year such as highly anticipated sequels Uncharted 2 and Assassin’s Creed II. Recently released on the Playstation Network is the new downloadable game, Star Trek D-A-C. For $9.99, players can buy this game with its permanent home on their PS3 hard drive. Star Trek D-A-C is a top-down shooter set in deep space where you can choose from a variety of ships, which include a flagship (such as the Enterprise or Constitution), missile cruiser, support frigate, bomber and fighter. Gaming has changed quite a bit since its beginnings in the 1970’s with Magnavox’s Odyssey and its first steps into mainstream pop culture in the mid to late 1980’s with Nintendo’s NES. Games have gone from tests of skill with steep learning curves such as Deadly Towers and Ghosts and Goblins to more cinematic titles such as Halo and Heavenly Sword. Developer “From Software” has produced a title that attempts to bring these hard-boiled games of yore back into the modern spotlight with Demon’s Souls. I still have the original Marvel Ultimate Alliance for my old Xbox. Man, I had a blast with that game. Though it wasn’t completely original (there were some X-Men games before it that used a similar format), it was loads of fun and eclipsed those X-Men games in every possible aspect of fun. When word got out that a new Batman game was on the horizon, ears perked. When screen shots were released, jaws dropped. Game developer Eidos brings us Batman: Arkham Asylum to the Playstation 3. I have to admit, I was kind of leery. I played the demo at an EB Games store a couple months back and to be honest, I was disappointed. Then the craziest thing happened. Well, it’s finally official! The long rumored PS3 Slim and $100 price cut was announced today at the GamesCom conference in Cologne, Germany. The PS3 Slim was officially announced with a retail date of Septmeber 1st and a price tag of $299. The price tag for the currently available 80GB retail models also dropped to $299 effective today. The new PS3 Slim will be 33% smaller and 36% lighter than its Big Brother. It will still feature a 120GB HDD, built-in Wi-Fi and of course, the BEST Blu-ray player in the world. 505 Games was nice enough to share with us some press release materials on their latest Playstation 3 game, IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey, which comes out this September. The game allows players to particpate in some of the most famous military campaigns of WWII in large-scale aerial combat over ground-based military operations. As pilots, gamers can battle across a range of missions through six major WWII battles – The Battle of Britain, Stalingard, Berlin, Sicily, the Battle of the Bulge and Korsun.
