Oni. Rakshasa. Yautjas. The highly intelligent alien race that has been visiting our planet for eons is known best as the Predator. Ever since their film debut alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987, the space-travelling bipeds have achieved success in film, novels and comic books. I’ve made no secret that Dark Horse’s Predator storylines are what drew me into comic book collecting back in the early 1990’s. It was Predator: Race War that became my first exposure into the print foray of the dreaded hunters. Continue reading ‘Top 10 Predator Comics of All Time’

So the The Wolfman is finally out, unleashed on the world and causing havoc in cinemas! Whereas if it’s good or bad, I honestly don’t know yet (still have to see it), but in celebration of its release I thought it would be fun to explore the golden nuggets of its sub-genre. As I mentioned in this column before; a good werewolf movie is a rare beast, not to mention the amount of films to have explored the subject are few and far between, especially compared to its counterparts; the Zombie and the Vampire. A brand new year is always my favorite in terms of films; all of the big releases seem beaming with promise and potential. Of course, by December, several will have fallen flat on their face, but lets not dwell on that, lets get excited while we still can. Overall, there are plenty of fresh flicks to look forward to, at least for a genre fan like myself; a bunch of Cult Directors make their long awaited returns (John Carpenter, Vincenzo Natali), old school action makes a comeback (Predators, Machete, The Expendables) and a bunch of horror projects get the Big Budget treatment (Piranha 3-D, Wolfman, Shutter Island). We thought it would be a fun idea, here at Why So Blu, if a few of us writers got together and wrote a conglomerate review of what we each thought our Top 10 Blu-ray releases of the year were in 2009. I know the anticipation and speculation must be running rampant through your veins right now so without further ado and anymore unnecessary words let’s get down to business and see what we all picked. I waited patiently until after my most recent screening of Sherlock Holmes to compile this list that I have been looking forward to working on all year long. As Gregg Senko kind of mentioned yesterday, it was not until the second half of the year that I was really able to round up a majority of the all-star gems I would be calling upon to complete the below list of my Top 10 films of 2009. Continue reading ‘Brian’s Top 10 Films of 2009’

2009 was an interesting year for films. By mid-summer, I was wondering if I was going to be able to fill out this list. Hasbro made a splash with two of its most successful lines appearing in theaters. Sandra Bullock had two films surface this year. Vampires seemed to be at the turn of every corner and Woody Harrelson made his Hollywood comeback. So, what topped the list and what was a cinematic bomb? Follow this list to the films of greatness (and not so great) for 2009! Continue reading ‘Gregg’s Best & Worst Cinema Films of 2009′

So its time for the “Best of the Year” list. I’ll admit even though I watch a truck load of films on a weekly basis, I’m more of the ‘home theatre’ type, meaning I see all types of films from different countries and different eras but I am not always up-to-date with the current films in cinemas. Still there were a select few that I went out of my way to catch during their release and fortunately this year was rarely disappointed. Continue reading ‘Thor’s Top 10 Movies of 2009′

Making it all the way to the top is no easy feat. Landing a record deal is hard enough let alone being able to tour and get your name out there. Unfortunately, there are several extremely talented and very entertaining bands out there that are not household names and as a result, are flying under our radar. Do not deprive your ears any longer from their musical brilliance! If a band didn’t make MTV, that doesn’t mean a thing! Continue reading ‘Five Bands You Should Know’

With the recent release of New Moon, the latest installment in Summit’s Box-Office behemoth the Twilight Series (or Saga, or whatever they’re calling it), vampires seem to be on everyone’s mind nowadays; be it for the tweens’ phenomenal adoration of them or the fan boy disdain of what they represent. One thing is for sure; the pale sulky vampires are here to stay until weekend openings say otherwise. Continue reading ‘Thor’s TOP 16 Vampire Movies’

For all of you familiar with my former TOP 5 list, you’re aware that my opinion on video game to film adaptations, like most of you, is fairly luke-warm. My feeling isn’t that they lack potential but need a strong and passionate director behind the scenes to execute it successfully. After a recent IGN article refreshed my memory on the upcoming slate game to film adaptations and their various states of development, I was quite happy to see a few had exciting potential to be pretty kick a#$. With Halloween done and gone, I couldn’t shake the feeling of how the Holiday had always been synonymous with bad horror sequels. Back in the 80’s, the studios churned out installments in their terror franchises like it was nobody’s business; horror icons like Freddy, Michael and Jason graced the celluloid screen annually on the Hollows Eve of yesteryears. At present, our sole champion is Lionsgate’s cash-cow franchise Saw, having just released their sixth instalment! Continue reading ‘Thor’s Top 5: Superior Horror Sequels’

Alright, I’ll admit the title is a mouth full, but give me a second to explain myself. Since nowadays Hollywood slightly redeemed themselves in the eyes of many geeks in a light of the recent comic book to film adaptations, it seems they’ve realize that combining solid talent to fan boy material can equal box office success as well as critical plaudits. It was a long road to get there and for every Dark Knight there is the Fantastic Four series. Continue reading ‘Top 5 Game to Film Should’ve Beens’

It’s my favorite time of the year and what better way to celebrate than to share with readers my Top 10 Horror Blu-rays of 2009. Let me rephrase the first half of that last sentence. Summer is my favorite time of the year. Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year. Halloween takes its roots from the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints’ Day. 2008 was an important year for the Blu-ray technology front. It was the year we were victorious in the, what seemed like forever, Hi-Def Format War. Let’s see George Lucas make a movie or television show about those 2 years. Since 2006 Blu-ray fought tooth and nail against rival Toshiba’s inferior HD DVD product. The only reason that the inferior HD DVD disc lasted so long was because they were cheaper to produce. And believe me, if you invested in this technology you would know just how cheap the product felt at times. Continue reading ‘Our “TOP 10” Blu-rays of 2008’
