From WB Home Entertainment, based on the DC/Vertigo comic book series comes the first season of “Lucifer,” which originally aired on Fox earlier this year. The series stars Tom Ellis (“Rush”) as the titular character Lucifer Morningstar, the literal devil, who is taking a bit of a vacation from running hell in order to explore the pleasures of an earthly existence as the owner of a posh club in Los Angeles. When he is encountered by police detective Chloe Decker, played by Lauren German (“Chicago Fire”), as she investigates the murder of a pop star friend of his, Lucifer becomes intrigued by the detective’s ability to resist his normally irresistible charm. When Lucifer is deemed useful, Detective Decker invites him to help her solve murders over the course of the season. Continue reading ‘Lucifer: Season One (DVD Review)’

CINEMAX PRESENTS Season 2 of the Emmy-winning drama, directed by Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh and starring Oscar-nominee Clive Owen as John Thackery, a brilliant but drug-addled surgeon who pushes the boundaries of medicine, morality and race in 1900s New York. Thackery’s absence (hospitalized for cocaine addiction), a lack of affluent patients and financial missteps have led to a decision by the hospital’s board to shutter the downtown location and move uptown. Algernon Edwards (André Holland) jockeys to become Thackery’s successor as Chief of Surgery, while fellow doctors, nurses, nuns and others grapple with personal and professional challenge Continue reading ‘The Knick: The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray Review)’

The second of two Comic-Con Hall H panels focused on The Walking Dead universe tool place on Friday, following what fans saw at the Fear the Walking Dead panel. Of course, many were far more excited about getting a look at the upcoming season of The Walking Dead, with the continuation of the Negan storyline, the introduction of The Kingdom and King Ezekiel, and of course a foll0w-up to who was killed by Negan’s barbed wire-wrapped baseball bat at the end of last season. The cast and crew were on hand, despite being very secretive about the upcoming season, but the first trailer for season 7 certainly set things up right.

To be a fan of The League, you don’t need to know much about fantasy football, or sports at all. You just need to have friends that you hate. The ensemble comedy follows a group of old friends in a fantasy football league who care very deeply… about beating each other for bragging rights. The League was created by the husband-and-wife team of Jeff Schaffer (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld) and Jackie Marcus Schaffer (Disturbia, Eurotrip) who serve as executive producers and directors. The series lasted for seven seasons on FX (and eventually FXX) and this DVD set features its final hours.

Alex Haley spent 12 years combing through historical records in order to trace find his lineage all the way back to before his ancestors were stolen from Africa and enslaved. This was an incredibly difficult task due of course to the fact that once an African was enslaved and taken to America, they were given a new name and were violently tortured if they were ever found engaging in activities from their native culture such as language, religion, or music. Fortunately for all of us, he became the first African American to find to be able to trace his lineage back to it’s point of origin. Roots chronicles the life of Haley’s ancestor Kuna Kinte from his birth in Africa all the way through his life as a slave into old age. We witness through all these years, thorough the beatings, the mutilations and humiliations how he still fought to hold onto his given name and heritage.

After a season that garnered some mixed reaction from fans (Archer: Vice), the animated comedy-spy series is back to all their regular antics. Six seasons in, Archer remains as irreverent as ever, with all kinds of cleverness to go along with the adult-oriented nature of this series. Now, with the seventh season fast approaching, it is time to look at this DVD release, containing every season six episode and more.

Here at SXSW, I was lucky enough to attend Lucha Underground’s very first live show outside of its home at the temple in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, “Lucha Underground: Austin Warfare.” For those unfamiliar with Lucha Underground, it is a relatively new and very unique wrestling program, produced by Robert Rodriguez for his television network, El Rey. Over the course of its first season last year, Lucha Underground quickly became the most entertaining and anticipated wrestling show each week, making the many other wrestling television options look like tired, boring, old jokes. “Lucha Underground: Austin Warfare” brought the same great-quality, fast-paced, high-flying wrestling action seen on the show to a ravenous Austin crowd and may end up being the most exciting thing I will get to see here at SXSW. More than three years ago, 2% of the world’s population inexplicably vanished – 140 million people, gone in an instant. No country, no state, no city was spared, except for one small town in eastern Texas. Population: 9261. Departures: zero. This is the setting for a tale of two families: the Garveys, who have moved to this special place, and whose lives were forever changed by the Departure, and the Murphys, a local family that seems to have been spared from an event that shook the rest of the world. But even in the town of Miracle, you can’t escape your past. This “immersive, deeply satisfying drama” (Jen Chaney, Esquire) delivers profound mystery, heart-pounding action, stocking controversy and startling beauty in all 10 gripping Season Two episodes. This true story takes place during the late 80’s in Yonkers, New York. The newly elected 28 year old Mayor
Nick Wasicsko has a major housing crisis to deal with. The courts have ruled that the city of Yonkers must build new low income housing witch would integrate and diversify traditionally white neighborhoods. Needless to say, this doesn’t go over so well. Even though it’s 1987 there are still plenty of people who believe that keeping to your own race is the best way to maintain peace and civility. There are also those who say that it’s not a matter of race, but economics. That the value of their homes will be brought down if low income housing comes in. Now granted, that is a valid argument. But the problem is, and they do touch on this, is that people of color have been systematically segregated into neighborhoods away from white people.

This season opens with the Turkish army as their ships approach the shores of Italy, poised to attack. Meanwhile Da Vinci is at the ready with one of his inventions; he has secured multiple cannons together in a way that they can be fired and maneuvered by one person. But what he doesn’t know is that the Turks have a secret weapon of their own. But does this season hold up to it’s predecessors? I’m a big fan of
David S. Goyer and the work he’s done on the
DC films such as
“The Dark knight Trilogy” and
“Man of Steel”. So I was excited to check this show out! Though Goyer’s dialogue may be a bit weak at times his strength generally lies in his character development.
