I was late to the party when it came to Richard Donner’s 1988 holiday film, Scrooged, starring Bill Murray. This modern-set fantastical take on the Charles Dickens tale has a lot going for it, including wild makeup effects and a level of classic Murray-style comedy that really works. That’s without mentioning the ending of this movie, which hits harder on an emotional level than anyone may expect, thanks to what kind of warmth Murray can bring when turning around elements of his grumpy Scrooge persona. All that is a great way of saying I’m looking forward to the upcoming 30th-anniversary release of Scrooged, which is now available on Blu-ray.

This dark suburban satire tells the story of a man who is accused of adultery by his ex-fiancée and forced to move in with his parents. While he fights for custody of his four-year-old daughter, he is gradually sucked into a bitter dispute between his parents and their neighbours regarding an old and beautiful tree that casts a shadow on the neighbours’ deck. As the dispute intensifies – property is damaged, pets mysteriously go missing, security cameras are being installed and there is a rumour that the neighbour was seen with a chainsaw. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has gone and done it! They officially hit the ball out of the proverbial ballpark by releasing one of the Holy Grail of sci-fi trilogies of theirs on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format the day before All Hallows Eve. Of course I’m talking about The Matrix Trilogy, which features the Wachowski Brothers’ (Andy and Larry Wachowski) 1999 acclaimed sci-fi action classic The Matrix along with their two sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (both from 2003). Now they could have taken the easy route like Fox did with the Predator releases for example and stopped right there by not giving us a complete upgrade in the audio department. But oh no! They went above and beyond with both new video transfers and Dolby Atmos surround tracks to boot! All three 4K Ultra HD presentations of the films featured here within this review are from a new scan of the original camera negative and is officially the first remaster of the films in nearly 15 years. The 4K UHD remasters were supervised by director of photography Bill Pope (The Matrix Trilogy, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, Baby Driver). How’s that for upping the ante in this hotly anticipated release? Let’s take a closer look down below at all three of the aforementioned titles housed in this 4K collection.

On November 13th, Scream Factory Will be the Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh thriller Single White Female on Blu-ray. I’m really loving that Scream Factory is showing no fear and embracing the 1990s thriller and horror period of the first half of that decade. A part of the history that is famously looked down upon but really has some notable highs. This film in particular was a big hit and a notable piece of pop culture at the time. Scream Factory is giving it some love here on home video with a whole slew of brand new interviews and a commentary track to boot. Feel free to preorder yourself, and your obsessed roommate, a copy by clicking on the Amazon link to below, and relive this fun little suspense-driven thriller. We are going to be getting a fifth and final film covering the life and times of one John Rambo, as portrayed by Sylvester Stallone. Lionsgate is taking the original three film and giving them the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray update before that happens next year. No word as of yet on the fourth film from 10 years ago, but one can assume they won’t leave that one hanging dry for long. Now that Rambo has been laid out, how about our old pal Jigsaw get his series ported over to 4K? Sorry, I’ll stay on point. This review will be covering the sequel, which was also a seminal action film for the 1980s, setting a whole slew of standards and really unleashing the beast. You can pre-order it by using the Amazon link following the review. Continue reading ‘Rambo: First Blood Part II (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Two decades the Coen Bros followed their heavily acclaimed and Academy beloved film Fargo with the neo-noir comedy The Big Lebowski. The film straight up bombed and the critics didn’t see to care much for it either. Little did we all know, it would became what is probably the biggest cult film of the 1990s and all time. This film is the bible to some people and one that is absolutely loved and worshiped (In a very literal sense even…seriously, look it up) by hordes. And in a fun twist of fate, the film has become the first Coen Bros movie to make its debut or leap/upgrade to the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format. In addition to having the standard version, there is one that comes with a few extra goodies and special packaging. The film was released on October 16th, but is ripe for the order the moment you click the Amazon link following the review! While some think DC is taking some time off this year from their cinematic output with “just” Aquaman at the tail end of the year, many forget they’ve actually put out two movies this year. Don’t forget the Teen Titans jumped from the small screen to the big one this past summer. While it didn’t light the box office on fire (I was hoping it would!), it still tripled its budget at the box office. It also opened to some of DC’s best reviews for ones not named Wonder Woman. Speaking of, she, her Justice League cohorts and the majority of the DC Universe do appear in this movie. You’ll be able to check it out if you missed it or just add it to your collection when the film arrives on Blu-ray this October 30th. Well, that’s already come and gone, but you order yourself a copy from the Amazon link below. Continue reading ‘Teen Titans GO! To The Movies (Blu-ray Review)’

Cinematic shlock at its finest, An Hour to Kill blasts through the screen, assaulting your senses for the next 90 minutes. There’s enough sleaze packed into the timeframe to fill ten other films, and it doesn’t care how you feel about it. This is a film that was written in a dirty, hot motel room, decorated with only a torn bed and a cracked desk, with the only other sound besides a typewriter being that of the swirl of the dangling overhead fan. There’s not a modicum of decency to be found within the walls of An Hour to Kill, and for that, I can’t help but love it.

Fresh off the first season of their series, Disconnected, Indie filmmaking company Open Sign Entertainment is continuing in the foray of television with American Scumbags. This show is looking to be Buffy the Vampire Slayer by way of American Pie, but keeping it cool like The Faculty if I’m right. Basically its going to play in the 90s genre sandbox. And this looks like something many people would be eager to see. If you are, you should help support the project as they’ll need your assistance with it. Something with grand ambitions like this need the help from fans who share the filmmakers’ passions like yourself. Personally, I’d LOVE to see them pull this off. It would be quite impressive to see. Keep on reading and I’ll supply you the details of how you can not be a scumbag and help these Americans out. Welcome fright fans! Halloween is almost upon us and seemingly out of tricks it felt like time for a little tasty treat. For both the genre geeks and my own beloved boss and cool critic Brian White I’m presenting something truly special this year to celebrate the dark magic of All Hallows’ Eve. I, much like Brian, am a massive admirer of the 2009 Marcus Dunstan helmed five-star original outing The Collector, a terrifying tale of two professional gents – one a master thief and the other a cunning killer – who find themselves trapped in a house together and both use their own ‘specific set of skills’ to fight and survive the night. From the suspenseful staging to the eclectic array of brutal booby traps, The Collector is a true hidden horror gem that ups the ante on traditional thriller themes. But besides the earnest work by lead man Josh Stewart as relatable robber Arkin, there’s a singular tasty turn that truly gives the flick its damn fine film flavor.
