Who’s ready for some kung fu action this summer? Well, Shout! Factory is! They’re bringing some classics from that golden era of the 70s to DVD this May! It even has some films featuring the work of legendary John Woo and Sammo Hung! I tend to really like these Movie Marathon packs that Shout! Factory puts out as they always seem to keep with a common theme for the movies and not just like they got some rights to movies and slapped them together “just because”. Maybe they are and its just dumb luck I’m finding common occurrences in them. Who knows? What I do know is that this DVD comes out on May 20th and you can pre-order it now so it’ll get there just before that lazy Saturday that is perfect for just popping it in and binging through all 4 films on it. Below you can find all the details provided from Shout! Factory. Continue reading ‘Check Out The Action-Packed MARTIAL ARTS MOVIE MARATHON On DVD May 20th!’

An epic look at the battle that turned the tide of World War II, STALINGRAD marches onto two-disc Blu-ray™ with 3D and DVD with Digital HD UltraViolet™ May 13 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. As the highest-grossing Russian film of all time and Russia’s official submission for Best Foreign Language Film to the 86th Academy Awards®, STALINGRAD contrasts the grand scale of the famous battle with the intimate human drama among the Russian soldiers, the few remaining civilians and the German soldiers who invaded the city. Any fellow Phantasm fans that read us here at Why So Blu? Well, screw it. This story that popped up this week with a poster and word that a fifth film was coming and that is was likely actually already shot and almost ready to go completely took my fascination. Fans have been on Don Coscarelli and stars like Reggie Bannister about when we would get to see the further antics of the Tall Man and those damn deadly silver balls. They’d all keep saying they’d like to and talked about it for years. Little did we know, they were filming the thing behind our backs. It was already done. This kind of stuff isn’t allowed to happen anymore in this day and age of internet news and social media. Yeah, I know its Phantasm and not a big huge tentpole film, but its a franchise picture and a horror one at that, a fanbase that will dig to find every dirty detail. Today, Entertainment Weekly was given the privilege of dropping the film’s first trailer, letting us know that YES, this film is pretty damn close to us seeing it already. So, yeah, this sneaking up on us has definitely brought my excitement even if I was bored by Phantasm IV. Continue reading ‘PHANTASM V: RAVAGER Trailer Debuts!’

Like it or not, there is a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie headed to theaters this summer. They have traveled through time, eaten plenty of pizza, and have now turned into CG creations produced by Nickelodeon and Michael Bay’s production company, Platinum Dunes. The film is directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: LA) and stars Megan Fox as April O’Neil and William Fichtner as The Shredder, who seems to have a tie to the secret of the Ooze as well as O’Neil’s father, who is now linked to its creation; making the film feel like it is borrowing from deleted sections of The Amazing Spider-Man‘s untold story. Regardless, I have no real issue with these changes, regardless of what the original comic and various cartoon series have established as general canon. If the film turns out to be a new fun take on the source material than I’ll be happy to start belting out lyrics to T-U-R-T-L-E Power. Continue on to check out the trailer.

More clips and promos arrive to torture those of us who can’t see THE WINTER SOLDIER until next weekend. They’re down below. I’m not going to view them, as I’d like to be as clear headed going in as can be (just the way I am). But, you’re more than welcome to check these out. THE WINTER SOLDIER invades your local multiplexes on April 4th. Soak it all in now, because one day Chris Evans will be retired.

The dark comedy BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY starring Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde, Michelle Monaghan, Ray Liotta and two-time Academy Award®-winner Jane Fonda, will be coming to Blu-ray, DVD, & DIGITAL HD with UltraViolet™ on April 15, 2014 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. I honestly no very little about this film, but the cast made me a sucker for wanting to check it out. Who knows how good it may be, but I like to be optimistic. The loginline reads as this: A small-town pharmacist’s uneventful life is turned inside out when he falls for a lonely trophy wife. That is plenty to hold my interest and hopefully it all works out for the best. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

True Detective, the critically-acclaimed show starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as two detectives assigned to a grisly and cultish murder case in the Louisiana bayou country, has become the most talked about new TV show of the year…and I have NOT seen it yet (insert unhappy face). To say I’m looking forward to seeing it is like saying it sure gets hot in the desert. Speaking of hot…hot off McConaughey’s Academy Award win (Dallas Buyers Club) and the show’s tense and explosive season finale, HBO Home Entertainment has just announced the June 10, 2014 Blu-ray with Digital HD, DVD & Digital Download debut of True Detective. Just in time for Father’s Day, the sets are packed with exclusive bonus features including interviews with McConaughey and Harrelson, conversations with creator Nic Pizzolatto, director Cary Joji Fukunaga and series composer T Bone Burnett, whose music helped establish the dark and ominous tone of the series, and never-before-seen footage from the series. Sorry about the title, but I saw the door open and went there. Sally Field’s Academy Award winning performance as a millworking union leader is making the jump to Blu-ray. Norma Rae was also nominated for several other Academy Awards and took home 2 statues. This was actually one of the higher profile films that my college screenwriting professor had worked on. But we’ll get into that more when we hit the review. I haven’t seen this film in a super long time time (close to maybe 20 years?), so I’m excited to revisit it. It comes out on April Fool’s Day, so we’ll see if its actually happening. I kid, I kid. Though I do wish some distributor would have played a joke this year with New Release Tuesday falling on April Fool’s to get the internet going in a tangent, like “Halloween 6 Producer’s Cut coming April 1!!!” and then it not coming out or something. Okay, so maybe I’m have a dark sense of humor. Anyway, read the specs on Norma Rae (No pre-order, but it really is coming out!) below where you can see the horribly photoshopped Sally Field on the cover. Also, how weird is it that they tell you there’s an Easter Egg on the disc already? Continue reading ‘On April 1st, Get Your Copy Of NORMA Blu-RAE!’

Honestly I was not going to post this, but it has been stuck in my mind all day. The world did not need Kellan Lutz as Hercules, but putting The Rock in as Hercules has my attention. I am a big fan of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and while I do not go out of my way to praise Brett Ratner, he has more often than not made entertaining films (if he keeps his mouth shut and just directs his films and his actors, his resume is pretty decent). Now the two have come together to adapt the graphic novels based on the Hercules legend and it looks like a lot of fun. I may not have cared for the recent Conan film with Jason Momoa, but this Hercules film looks to be a more solid step in the fun that can be had with that kind of story. Also, The Rock looks freaking massive in this role, fitting of the mythological Greek hero. Continue on to check out the trailer and see some pics and a poster.

The Hammer library is slowly creeping out into Blu-ray. It’s wild that there’s only one Christopher Lee Dracula film out there, but I have no idea what the rights situations are with those. Synapse Films, however, they’ve got ahold of one. It’s Countess Dracula, which is actually based somewhat around true events. Its coming as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack on May 6th. Below you’ll find all the details and a pre-order link so you can assure yourself a copy come release day!

Here is the second trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past. Given how quiet marketing has been, as far as revealing plot details regarding one of the best story lines in the X-Men comics goes, this new trailer will surely satisfy those on board with the popular mutant franchise, as it has plenty to offer as far as juicy new footage, fitting of an action/superhero blockbuster. A new poster has been released as well, once again suggesting that (aside from The Wolverine) Fox has no idea how to make a great X-Men movie poster. This one is not terrible, but it’s still pretty blah. Take a look for yourself at both the new trailer and the new poster by continuing on in this post.

This doesn’t make up for Oldboy, but alas someone is finally digging into Spike Lee’s back catalog of films. And, funny enough, I now need to write a new piece for next week’s ‘Wishlist’ article as it was going to be for The 25th Hour which now sees a release date of June 10! It also includes a film I liked back when I saw it (but haven’t seen since the 90s) Summer Of Sam. Probably the highest profile of this release to many will be He Got Game. All the films feature a newly recorded commentary track. Maybe Jungle Fever is down the pipeline sometime soon? Its still not clear whether these will be 2-disc sets or share a disc. If they’re using BD-50s (which I would be shocked if they weren’t), then its really no big deal. No pre-order is available yet, but scroll down for the first official announcement and specs!
