The Island (Blu-ray Review)

The Island was a bit of a surprise, because I wasn’t really expecting it when it arrived.  I’m not complaining, mind you.  The Island is a futuristic science fiction film directed by Michael Bay.  Yes, that Michael Bay.  The guy that directed Bad Boys, Transformers, The Rock, etc.  I missed it in theaters upon release.  It wouldn’t be until DVD and later on via HD-DVD (German import) that I would have the chance to experience the grand scope and splendor of The Island. Paramount Pictures has finally brought The Island to Blu-ray which will be released on the high definition format on June 21st, 2011.  This is an early Blu-ray review.  Now sit back and hold on tight, because we’re going to The Island!   Continue reading ‘The Island (Blu-ray Review)’

Leverage Season 3 (DVD Review)

We’ve got more television antics to bring you here on Why So Blu.  On deck we have Leverage The 3rd Season on DVD.  This is the complete 3rd season of the hit television show which airs weekly on TNT.  Again, as with Being Human I was thrown into the review mix without knowing what the show would be about, so I had to go back into the Netflix queue and request the first two seasons on DVD to better acquaint myself with Leverage. The other buzzwords that I was hearing prior to watching Leverage was that it was an American remake of the British television show Hu$tle. I adore that show.  There was only one way to find out and that was by tackling the Leverage series all at once.  Here’s our review for Leverage The 3rd Season.  Enjoy.   Continue reading ‘Leverage Season 3 (DVD Review)’

Being Human Season 3 (Blu-ray Review)

So my fellow editor and writer Brian White put out the call asking the Why So Blu crew if they wanted to review something called Being Human Season 3. I initially thought someone else would grab it, but luckily no one did.  After I looked it up on the internet and found out what it was I knew I had to make tracks and scoop it up.  I was victorious in that department.  This left just one small problem, though.  I had not seen the first two seasons of the show, so some reconnaissance was in order.  To the Netflix queue!  I went through a mini marathon of sorts to get all caught up on Being Human and I am now well versed in the tragic world of these monsters.   Here’s our review of Being Human Season 3 on Blu-ray.  Enjoy!  Continue reading ‘Being Human Season 3 (Blu-ray Review)’

Once Upon A Time In The West (Blu-ray Review)

With the summer heat fast approaching, and in some cases, already here, what better way to cool off than with some westerns on Blu-ray.  Once Upon A Time In The West is Sergio Leone’s epic western starring Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards, and Claudia Cardinale.  Paramount Pictures has gone to the vaults and meticulously restored the prints.  This Blu-ray includes the 166 minute Unrated version and the 165 PG-13 version.   One minute separate both versions, but this review, for the most part, will cover the Unrated version.  I’ll try not to tip over with too much excitement, so let’s get to the meat and potatoes of Once Upon A Time In The West! True Grit (Blu-ray Review)

Father’s Day is coming, so we decided that it would be more than appropriate if Why So Blu posted a nice double header of western Blu-ray madness.  True Grit is part one of the equation with Once Upon A Time In The West being part two.  I remember seeing the teaser trailer for True Grit several months ago in theaters and it gave me chills!  I wasn’t aware that it was a remake of the John Wayne classic of the same name.  The Coen Brothers (Joel and Ethan) were back together again and ready to inject the western genre with their trademark film style.  Featuring an all-star cast of well known talent like Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper, and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld; will this remake on Blu-ray have True Grit?  Continue reading ‘True Grit (Blu-ray Review)’

The Firm (Blu-ray Review)

Paramount Pictures has gone to its catalog vault and brought The Firm to Blu-ray in a Best Buy EXCLUSIVE.  The Firm is Sydney Pollack’s take on John Grisham’s legal thriller of the same name.  Tom Cruise stars in the The Firm which features a most impressive all star cast including Gene Hackman, Hal Holbrook, David Strathairn, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Holly Hunter, Ed Harris, and Gary Busey.  Talk about wow!  The Firm is yet another film that I have never seen before, but everyone I’ve talked to throughout the years has always said it was good.  Let us see how it stacks up on Blu-ray.   Continue reading ‘The Firm (Blu-ray Review)’

The Manchurian Candidate (Blu-ray Review)

Time to dive back into the classics!  Classic films on Blu-ray always make me smile, because of the luster and time period, and because most of the time I wasn’t even born yet.  It’s great to see how films were made back in the day.  The Manchurian Candidate is one of these films.  Make no mistake now, this is the original 1962 release and not that abomination of a remake with Denzel Washington.  The original Manchurian Candidate starred Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Angela Lansbury, Janet Liegh, and Henry Silva.  That’s a very impressive cast.  Will this be a very impressive Blu-ray?  Let us visit with The Manchurian Candidate, shall we?  Continue reading ‘The Manchurian Candidate (Blu-ray Review)’

Savage County (DVD Review)

Here we are again with some more horror material to hopefully satiate your horror-film palette.  Savage County is a DVD release from the FilmBuff Company and MTV New Media.  In essence, this is more DTV  (direct-to-video) programming on a low budget scale.  The question remains as to whether it’s any good or not.  Savage County was made on  a $250,000 budget which by all intents and purposes is a lot of money.  How does it compare to the many horror movies out there that share similar themes and storylines?  Get ready to cross township lines and enter Savage County on DVD courtesy of Why So Blu.   Continue reading ‘Savage County (DVD Review)’

Dead Man Walking (Blu-ray Review)

The hits just keep on hitting here at Why So Blu.  Up next is a tale of crime, redemption, and punishment in Tim Robbin’s Dead Man Walking. Another popular film from the mid 90’s starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn.  Dead Man Walking makes its debut on Blu-ray in the states and this is our review.  In fact, this will be our THIRD Blu-ray review that features relationships (of some kind) and dysfunction (of some kind) and how they will or will not resolve themselves.  Dead Man Walking is another film that I thought was released 8-9 years ago.  Well, you better make that 16 years ago!  *gets a flashback*  So how will Dead Man Walking on Blu-ray fare?  Walk with me and see for yourself.  Continue reading ‘Dead Man Walking (Blu-ray Review)’

Leaving Las Vegas (Blu-ray Review)

Wow, two seriously messed up relationship films in a row for this humble reviewer must be a record! (Betty Blue would be the other one) That’s okay, because when it comes to Blu-ray my gluttonous tendencies know no bounds.  Years before he would actually be considered insane in some circles Nicolas Cage was out there doing serious character study pieces.  Cage even won an Academy Award in 1995 for Best Actor in Leaving Las Vegas and Elisabeth Shue would also be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role.  When both leads are nominated and win then you know they’re a powerhouse duo not to be messed with.  So how does the Leaving Las Vegas Blu-ray compare to their performances overall?  Let’s take a trip to Sin City and find out!  Continue reading ‘Leaving Las Vegas (Blu-ray Review)’

The Mechanic (Blu-ray Review)

Here we go, Jason Statham is back as a another unstoppable killing machine in The Mechanic. I’ve lost count as to how many films Statham has made where he plays a hitman, but what makes this film kind of a stand out is that it’s a remake of the classic 1972 film starring Charles Bronson.  I have not seen the original in many, many years, so I will not make comparisons, because I just don’t remember.  Simon West is back in the director’s chair (Con-Air) and with an eclectic cast that includes Donald Sutherland and Ben Foster, how will this remake measure up?  Let’s see what happens.   Continue reading ‘The Mechanic (Blu-ray Review)’

Betty Blue (Blu-ray Review)

I love my French cinema and Cinema Libre Studio has brought Betty Blue to the Blu-ray format.  I must warn you that this is the original 116 minute theatrical version and not the 185 minute director’s cut that played in a few art house theaters not that long ago which I missed.  Hopefully people can get on the bandwagon and discover Betty Blue for the first time on Blu-ray since it does hit themes that many of us can relate to and others that we never will.  The trailers have all made the film seem like a dark comedy, but there’s more to it than that.  There is plenty of explicit sex to go around for those that are so inclined along with some intense drama.  If you’re up to the adventure then keep reading.  Continue reading ‘Betty Blue (Blu-ray Review)’

Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Power Struggle (DVD Review)

Cartoon Network has released Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Power Struggle on DVD for your viewing pleasure.  This is a 2 disc DVD set containing 10 episodes of the insanely popular kids television show.  I should post this disclaimer: Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Power Struggle is actually PART 2 of the first season.  I say that, because nowhere on the package will you find that information.  This is somewhat of a blunder, because viewers will start off at episode eleven and will wonder what happened in episodes 1-10.  This set contains episodes 11-20, so we’ll have to work with what we’ve got.  Let’s get to it.   Continue reading ‘Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Power Struggle (DVD Review)’
